Chapter 234 I Just Want You to See Me

Edward shuddered like he'd been hit by a truck!

Once upon a time, they were a married couple. Now, she was looking at him like he was the enemy.

That butterfly knife hadn't even touched his skin yet, but it felt like it had already stabbed him in the heart.

"The last guy I treated like this was Eric. But he had the brains to stay away from me," Evelyn said, tilting her head, her eyes cold as ice. "Edward, you think you're so noble. I shouldn't have to stab you in the kidney to get my point across, right?"

"What's so great about him?" Edward croaked, ignoring her threat.

"What did you just say?" She looked stunned for a second.

"What's so great about Gilbert?" Edward's eyes were red as he stepped closer.

Even with that sharp knife pressed against his chest, even knowing how ruthless Evelyn could be, he didn't care.

"Edward, back off!" Evelyn's eyes widened as she stepped back, but the knife stayed steady against his chest. "You think I won't hurt you?"

"Why are you so stuck on him? Just to get back at me?" Edward asked, his voice shaking, not even feeling the knife tip piercing his suit.

"You think I should be with you instead? Why are you so mad?" Evelyn laughed bitterly. "We were together for three years, and you were the one who pushed me away."

Edward took a deep breath, the pain in his chest spreading through every nerve.

Sadly, everything she said was true and brutal, leaving him helpless.

"Evelyn!"

Evelyn's heart tightened as she saw Gilbert standing a few steps away, looking worried.

"Evelyn, you're still not well. Let me take you to the hospital, okay?" Gilbert's gentle eyes were full of concern as he reached out to her.

He didn't fight Edward in front of her but chose to care for her, protect her, and show her who really loved her.

"Okay. I'm coming."

Evelyn pulled back the knife and walked towards Gilbert without looking back, like she'd already made her choice.

It was clear who was left behind.

Edward stood there, stiff and pathetic.

Evelyn walked up to Gilbert and said softly, "Let's go."

Gilbert's fingers trembled slightly as he pulled his hand back. "Okay."

They walked away, leaving Edward's desolate and embarrassed gaze behind.

It wasn't until the hallway was empty that Edward slowly raised his hand to cover the wound that no longer felt pain, his eyes filled with sorrow.

"Evelyn, I just want you to see me," he murmured.

Gilbert quickly took Evelyn to the hospital.

By the time they reached the entrance, she was in so much pain she couldn't get out of the car, clutching her abdomen with a pale face.

Her stomach had always been weak, a lasting consequence of her rough years as a Doctors Without Borders volunteer, enduring irregular meals amid chaos and strife.

"Mr. Alexander! I'll get a wheelchair right away!" Curtis was sweating bullets.

"No need, I'll do it." Gilbert got out first, bent down, and carried Evelyn out, striding into the hospital.

"It hurts," Evelyn gasped weakly, leaning against him.

"Evelyn, last time you told me not to hold you casually."

Gilbert held her tightly, as if to embed her into his chest. "But I had no choice, Evelyn. Please don't blame me, okay?"

His tone was super gentle, almost coaxing.

Curtis, standing nearby, was dumbfounded!

The cold, ruthless, and indifferent Gilbert had never been so gentle and subservient to a woman, except Evelyn.

After a long night, Evelyn finally got an IV and fell asleep on the hospital bed.

Maybe it was the bond from childhood, combined with her physical exhaustion, that made her, usually wary of unfamiliar men, allow Gilbert to stay by her side.

In the quiet hospital room, Evelyn's sweet breathing filled the air.

Gilbert stayed by her bedside, watching over her.

Suddenly, Evelyn turned over, a soft moan escaping her throat.

A shiver of electricity ran through Gilbert's chest, his Adam's apple moving restlessly, his mouth dry.

Over the years, whether in Mugden or Aurora Isle, countless beautiful women had thrown themselves at him.

But the more they did that, the less he cared. Women were more of a hassle than barnacles on a ship's hull.

Only Evelyn could treat him like dirt and get away with it.

No matter what she did, no matter how much she pissed him off, he'd always let it slide.

Gilbert's eyes darkened, and he couldn't help but reach out, wanting to touch the face that haunted his dreams.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed. Curtis had sent a message: [Mr. Alexander, Ms. Taylor's family is here to pick her up. They're at the door.]

Gilbert adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and opened the door to the hospital room.

In the hallway stood Landon, Simon, and William, their tall figures like three imposing icebergs in front of him.

"Sorry, Mr. Taylor," Gilbert said quickly, taking the initiative. "Evelyn's stomach pain hit suddenly, and she couldn't walk, so I had to bring her to the hospital first. I couldn't notify you in time."

William's lips were pressed so tightly they were white, barely able to contain his anger at Gilbert for taking Evelyn without permission.

"Gilbert, you—" He was about to speak when Landon raised his hand, signaling him to calm down.

Landon turned to Gilbert with a faint smile. "Gilbert, I appreciate you bringing Evelyn to the hospital. But you knew we were looking for her, yet you ignored my calls and then turned off your phone. What's up with that?"

Simon's brows furrowed deeply, anger rising in his eyes.

Gilbert's narrow eyes curved as he adopted a humble demeanor. "Sorry, I was only thinking about Evelyn at the time, wanting her to rest well without being disturbed. So I didn't think much about it."

"What are you saying? Do you think we don't care about Evelyn?" Simon snapped, his anger flaring up instantly.

"You two are Evelyn's brothers, of course, you care for and love her," Gilbert said calmly. "Since you care so much for Evelyn, you shouldn't mind if there's another man in this world who loves and cares for her, right?"

Simon and William were stunned by Gilbert's directness, openly expressing his affection for Evelyn in front of them.

In the entire Taylor family, there wasn't a second person so openly passionate. Even Evelyn, who was showered with love and decisive in her actions, had never expressed her feelings so fervently and openly.

If she had dared to do so back then, she wouldn't have suffered so much and endured so many grievances with Edward.

Upon hearing this, Landon's eyes deepened, and he had to admit that Charlie had a keen eye for people. His opposition to Evelyn and Gilbert's relationship wasn't without reason.

Although Gilbert appeared gentle and refined and was wholly devoted to Evelyn, he still made Landon feel very uncomfortable, an invisible sense of invasion pressing on his chest, faint but undeniable.

"Simon, wait here. I'll go get Evelyn."

Landon, with a stern face, was about to push open the hospital room door when he glanced at Gilbert and said, "Gilbert, we can handle things here. There's no need to trouble you further. Please leave."

Gilbert walked towards the parking lot with a relaxed expression, seemingly unaffected.

Curtis followed closely, indignant. "Mr. Alexander, do they have a problem with you?"

Gilbert's lips curled up, and he said, "It doesn't matter. The person I want to marry is Evelyn, not them. I don't care what they think of me."

"But Mr. Alexander, I still feel it's unfair for you. You are the undisputed king of Aurora Isle, ruling with an iron fist. Why come back to Mugden to face such disrespect and suffering?" Curtis was still very upset.

"In Aurora Isle, having all that means nothing."

Gilbert adjusted his glasses, his eyes flashing with a cold, fierce light. "I should have had so much more, but I was forced to stay in Aurora Isle. Others think I was free and untroubled, but only I know how painful each day in Aurora Isle was."

"If it weren't for those trash in the Alexander family, if it weren't for Elbert's heartlessness, the entire Alexander family would already be mine."

In an instant, Gilbert's eyes reddened, and he said, "And Evelyn wouldn't have married Edward. She should have been my wife, my woman, long ago!"

Curtis shivered as he looked at the crazed expression on Gilbert's face, respectfully lowering his head.

"The Alexander family, I want it. Evelyn, I want her too. Everything I lost, I will take back!" Gilbert said.
