Chapter 581 Where You Go, I Go
The atmosphere grew tense. Chief Carter forced a dry smile, "Why don't you both have a cup of coffee?"
"No thanks, I wouldn't dare drink your coffee," Evelyn replied coldly, crossing her elegant legs and raising her eyes. "You've detained my secretary. Release him now. This is between the Taylor family and the Alexander family. If you want to keep climbing the ranks and have a smooth career, don't get involved and make things harder for yourself."
Evelyn was always direct and never wasted words.
Chief Carter's fake smile was slipping, but he still managed to say, "Ms. Taylor, I get where you're coming from. But I've been in law enforcement for over thirty years, and I've dealt with all kinds of people. Once they're brought in, none of them is innocent. William may be your man, but he severely injured someone from the Alexander family, which is a serious assault. I've reported this to my superiors."
Evelyn's brows furrowed deeply, her hand clenched in anger on the armrest of the sofa.
"You both are prominent figures in Mugden, but before the law, everyone is equal. Even the wealthy can't bully others and ignore the law. So, Ms. Taylor, I can't comply with your request."
"Chief Carter, you talk a big game about equality before the law," Edward said, his warm hand tightly gripping Evelyn's cold one, his expression icy. "Then it means you shouldn't wrongly convict an innocent person, right?"
Evelyn's eyes widened, realizing something, and her heart skipped a beat.
"What do you mean, Mr. Wellington?" Chief Carter asked, surprised.
"The person who beat Randy wasn't William. It was me," Edward said, a cold smirk on his lips, his dark eyes flashing with a sharp, chilling light. "You can release William now and arrest me."
Evelyn's breath caught, gripping his hand tightly, "Edward! You…"
Chief Carter was dumbfounded, mouth agape, unable to react.
"What's wrong, Chief Carter? I've confessed, so arrest me," Edward said calmly, his large hand gently caressing Evelyn's waist, providing her with a deep sense of security. "Or does your so-called equality only apply to ordinary citizens and not to the wealthy?"
"No, no… Mr. Wellington, you…" Chief Carter stammered, panicking.
The president of Mugden's top financial group had come to confess, claiming he beat Randy from the Alexander family. What should he do? He deeply regretted agreeing to the Alexander family's involvement in this matter.
Calvin's words echoed in his mind, but he really didn't dare touch Edward!
"If that's the case, I'm involved too," Evelyn said, raising her brows with a mischievous smile. "When you took Randy's statement, did you ask who broke his finger, who kicked out his teeth? Oh, and his impotence, that was my doing too. Such a big deal, didn't the Alexander family mention it to you?"
"Ms. Taylor! Intentional injury is a serious crime. I understand you want to protect your people, but you can't joke about it here!" Chief Carter wiped his sweat furiously.
"Evelyn, don't joke," Edward chided gently, pinching the soft flesh of her waist.
"I'm not joking, I'm serious," Evelyn said, meeting his beautiful eyes and smiling sweetly. "Where you go, I go."
Her words shook Edward to his core, his heart racing uncontrollably, his breath uneven.
She was his wife. Always had been, his beloved wife.
"You two will do anything to protect your own, won't you?" A sinister voice cut through the tension as Calvin stepped into the room, his face dark with anger.
Chief Carter felt a wave of relief wash over him, almost ready to cry with joy at Calvin's arrival.
Right behind Calvin was Gordon!
After the call, Calvin couldn't shake his unease and decided to come over. He immediately contacted Gordon, explained the situation, and asked him to handle Randy's issue.
Gordon, still smarting from his previous humiliation by Calvin, initially didn't want to help. But upon hearing Evelyn and Edward were involved, he couldn't pass up the chance to see them suffer, so he eagerly came along.
Evelyn gritted her teeth, her eyes blazing with anger!
This despicable, shameless creature made her sick!
"Mr. Alexander, I didn't expect you to hire him as your lawyer," Edward said, his tone ice-cold. "You do know Gordon and William are related, right?"
"Of course I know. So what?" Calvin responded with a malicious smile. "Everyone knows Gordon is a top lawyer. Hiring the best for my brother's defense, is there a problem?"
"Gordon is William's older brother. Instead of defending William, he's siding with the enemy who wants to imprison his own kin. What does that say?" Edward's cold, handsome face was filled with disdain.
Gordon glared venomously at Edward, his face twisted into a nasty sneer. "Mr. Wellington, I'm honored to receive such personal attacks from you. As a lawyer, I serve whoever offers the best terms. Is it necessary for you to stand on a moral high ground and criticize me? You make it hard for us lawyers. According to you, shouldn't criminals also have the right to a fair legal process?"
He blinked mockingly, "Mr. Wellington, are you in such a rush because you didn't find a reliable lawyer for William? If I'd known, I wouldn't have accepted Mr. Alexander's invitation!"
Evelyn's temple throbbed with anger!
If they weren't in the police station, she'd smash his teeth and kick his groin, making him Randy's hospital buddy!
"I don't need to find a lawyer for William. An innocent person doesn't need to argue their case," Edward said, smiling instead of getting angry. "Even if I did, I wouldn't choose you. Even beasts protect their young. You lack basic decency and morality, worse than an animal. You're better off with Mr. Alexander. Birds of a feather flock together."
"Well said!" Evelyn clapped her hands wildly for her man, laughing heartily.
Chief Carter couldn't laugh, hiding behind, afraid to show himself.
The atmosphere was tense, ready to explode!
"Edward! Stop boasting!" Calvin shouted, his face contorted with rage. "You've harmed Randy so badly. The Alexander family will fight you to the end! You think you can exonerate William and take the blame, then use your wealth to get special treatment and make this disappear? Dream on!"
Gordon patted Calvin's shoulder, signaling him to stay calm, lest he say too much.
He stepped forward, looking at Chief Carter with a slow, deliberate smile, "Chief Carter, your police work efficiency is lacking. We've been catching up with Mr. Wellington and Ms. Taylor for a while, yet the paperwork isn't done?"
Chief Carter said, "What?"
Calvin was equally confused.
At that moment, there was a knock on the door.
A police officer entered with a document, handing it to Chief Carter.
His words stunned Edward and Evelyn:
"Chief Carter, this is William's confession and plea deal. He's already signed it."
