Chapter 201 If I can Make Up for It a Little

The next day at the Wellington Group.

Bart rushed in, saying, "Edward, about that thing you asked me to investigate..."

He stopped mid-sentence, horrified to see Edward casually eating a brownie from a dirty box.

Too late to stop him!

Edward savored it, eyes closed.

"Edward! No! That was from the trash! How can you eat it?" Bart exclaimed.

"The box is dirty, but the inside is clean," Edward replied, taking another bite.

'Tastes great, but these weren't made for me,' he thought bitterly, his throat aching.

Evelyn used to make these for him daily, but he didn't appreciate it then. Now, he had to dig through the trash for them.

"So, how did the investigation go?" Edward asked, putting away the treats.

"After some pressure and bribery, the blogger gave me a clue!" Bart said.

"Don't keep me waiting."

"He got the wedding venue setup photos of Ada's from a private message. He doesn't know the source, just leaked the news."

"Are you taking some amateur class?" Edward asked coldly.

Bart was stunned.

"A class in useless chatter," Edward said, eyebrows furrowed. "This is your clue? You don't even know who's behind this. I think your bonus should go to charity."

"Edward, calm down! I got the account of the source but rushed back to report. I'll check it right away!" Bart's face paled at the thought of losing money.

"Give me the account. I'll check it myself," Edward said.

"This is a small matter."

"If I wait for you, I'll lose," Edward said, frowning. "I need to find out the mastermind before others do."

"Edward! I never thought I'd see you take action. I can die happy!" Bart said, almost crying.

"You're overacting," Edward said, flexing his fingers.

Back in military school, he learned tracking, counter-tracking, intelligence gathering, and decryption. But as CEO of the Wellington Group, those skills got rusty.

When Evelyn was still Lily, he used his hacking skills to investigate her and the men around her. He found nothing, which made him realize her companions were no ordinary people.

But this time, the opponent shouldn't be that strong. If he could't find out, he was not fit to be CEO!

Seeing Edward eager, Bart grinned, "Edward, be honest. Do you have feelings for Mrs. Wellington?"

Edward shot him a cold glance. "Do you think you have too much salary and want to do charity?"

Bart zipped his mouth shut.

"For the past three years, I owed her," Edward sighed, his eyes dimming. "If I can make up for it even a little, I will."

---

That night.

In Evelyn's private villa, Landon and Simon rushed over after hearing about her business trouble.

In the study, Simon was sweating, typing furiously on the computer, tracking the user info behind the account Evelyn provided.

Meanwhile, Evelyn lounged on the sofa, clinking glasses with Landon and enjoying the top-notch wine he brought.

"You two are too much," Simon grumbled, busy and parched. "I came over at night just to be a doormat? And you two are leisurely drinking wine. Isn't that heartless? Are you bullying a public prosecutor?"

Seeing their relaxed demeanor, Simon felt helpless. "Don't drink it all, save me a sip!"

"Just do your job well. If you do, all the wine in my cellar is yours," Evelyn teased with a smile.

"I'm a person of high moral integrity. Don't think you can corrupt me!" Simon frowned, fingers flying over the keyboard.

"Evelyn, Charlie heard about your situation," Landon said gently.

"Bad news travels fast. Is he just waiting to laugh at me?" Evelyn's mood soured, and she pouted.

"Charlie did laugh at you."

Landon chuckled, pinching her cheek. "He said, 'Is there no one in this world she cares about that she gets upset over such a trivial matter?'"

Evelyn fell silent.

"Also, Charlie said Ada will be filming the eighth installment of 'The Death March' next year. The producers went through many channels to find him, asking him to invest."

Landon leaned in, smiling mysteriously. "Charlie told me privately that if you're still upset, he can have the producers replace the lead actress anytime."

Evelyn gasped, not expecting Charlie to have such connections. "There's no need. We breached the contract first, and Ada did nothing wrong. It's not right to ruin her career," Evelyn sighed, feeling stifled. "Besides, I've started my own business, not depending on the family for everything. And with this incident, the only way to vent my anger is to find out who set me up and personally expose them!"

"That's the spirit of a Taylor," Landon said warmly, patting her head.

'Let her play and cause a ruckus. Even if the sky falls, we can hold it up for her,' Landon thought.

At that moment, the phone on the coffee table vibrated.

Evelyn glanced at it, her eyes widening slightly as "Edward" flashed on the screen.

"It's your ex-husband calling," Landon teased.

"Midnight horror call!" Evelyn flipped the phone over, not wanting to answer.

Suddenly, William hurried in, frowning. "Evelyn! Edward is here, right outside the door!"

At the same time, the doorbell rang.
