Chapter 77 Giving You the Chance to Settle Privately
"Edward! What does it take for you to let me go?!" Evelyn was sweating cold, gritting her teeth in anger. "Do you know how rude it is to keep pestering me? I didn't say I'm not responsible for what happened to you. I've already had William talk to you, and now you're arguing with me again?"
"You wanted to settle this privately, right? I'm giving you the chance to settle it privately." Edward took a deep breath, his voice trembling slightly. "If you come out to see me, I won't pursue the matter of Ulysses hitting me anymore. Consider it settled."
"You!" Evelyn was very angry.
'The guy on the other side who's been pestering and acting arrogantly is actually Edward? Did Edward lose his mind?'
"Fine, I'll come see you, but you better keep your word and agree to settle this privately!" After saying that, Evelyn angrily hung up the phone.
As soon as Evelyn left, John pulled Donna aside. "Mrs. Donna, there are two Maybachs with license plates CA-XY789 parked outside the estate for a long time. There are also two men in suits standing by the cars, staring at our estate. Could they be dangerous individuals? Should I activate the security alarm?"
Donna frowned, pondered for a moment, and said, "Don't do anything for now, and don't inform Charlie. I'll handle this."
"Yes, Mrs. Donna." John nodded and left.
Donna quickly pulled Joyce and Susan into the corridor for an urgent discussion.
"Joyce, Susan, something has come up tonight."
"What's going on?" Joyce blinked, not understanding.
"Donna, speak up., Susan, with her straightforward nature, couldn't wait and urged.
"Edward is here, right at our doorstep, probably looking for trouble with Evelyn." Donna lowered her voice, her expression serious.
"What? Edward dares to show up at our doorstep? I'm getting a weapon!" Susan angrily rolled up her sleeves and turned to leave, but Joyce had to exert a lot of effort to hold her back. "Susan, don't act impulsively! If things get out of hand, it will alert Charlie, and then we won't be able to keep the secret!"
"Since Edward was shouting at our doorstep, why shouldn't we break Edward's legs?" Susan's eyes turned red with anger. "How much suffering did Evelyn endure because of Edward in the past, and now Edward has divorced Evelyn at such a young age, leaving her without dignity! How can Evelyn tolerate Edward trampling on her like this? You may be able to endure it, but I can't!"
"We can't either! But Susan, Evelyn instructed us not to get involved in this matter. If you take care of Edward now, you may feel relieved, but it will only cause trouble for Evelyn later, making her uncomfortable! What Evelyn wants is not this continuous entanglement; she wants a quick end to her relationship with Edward, to leave Riverside Villa cleanly and have no further ties with Edward." Donna held Susan anxiously.
"But I feel like Edward doesn't seem willing to let go of Evelyn, Donna." Joyce pressed her lips, worried. "I've also inquired about Edward's personality. Edward is quite ruthless and cold-hearted. He never had any girlfriends before Nicole and never got involved with women. For someone like him to come all the way from Mugden to Hameen just to see Evelyn, I feel like it's not something Edward would do. So, I wonder if Edward might regret divorcing Evelyn?"
"Scumbag Edward! He is just a despicable man!" Susan clenched her fists. "Not to mention that heartless men like Edward never have regrets, and even if they do, it's too late for any love to be of any use! It's not even good to look at Edward for a moment!"
"Just now, I saw Evelyn sneak out. She must be going to see Edward." Donna was the most thoughtful and deep-thinking among Joyce and Susan. She said cunningly, "Joyce, stay home and keep an eye on Charlie, help cover up Evelyn's departure. Susan, don't you want to avenge Evelyn? You can do it tonight!"
It was just the beginning of autumn, and the temperature had dropped these days, making the night breeze in Hameen quite cold.
Bart shivered from the cold. Seeing Edward standing like a statue in the cold wind, tall and proud, showing no signs of leaving without seeing Evelyn, Bart could only endure the cold.
Suddenly, Bart thought of a newly released song, particularly fitting for Edward at this moment,
'For you, I endure the cold wind, shedding tears in loneliness.'
Edward had waited for a long time, but he wasn't tired. Back in the military, he used to stand at attention for a whole day. It was quite simple standing for a few hours. Edward was just worried.
Edward feared that Evelyn might change her mind at the last minute and refuse to come out to see him. 'What should I do then? Break it? But this is Oasis Villa. Plus, who am he to knock on the door of Oasis Villa?'
Edward couldn't find a reason.
He felt a bit uneasy and emptied the last cigarette from the pack.
Just as Edward was about to light the cigarette between his lips, the sound of high heels approached him.
"Edward."
Edward's heart suddenly raced as he looked at Evelyn, expressionless and cold, holding out the cigarette, his hand trembling.
Evelyn lowered her head and quickly glanced at the ground littered with cigarette butts, furrowing her brow. "I thought you quit smoking. What are you doing?"
"Because I've been waiting too long." Edward quickly extinguished the cigarette butt and looked at Evelyn.
"Are you going to blame me again? Go ahead and blame me, Edward, you're the best at pinning nonexistent crimes on others." Evelyn mocked.
"Lily." Edward clenched his fingers, his voice hoarse from too much smoking.
"I've come to see you, and your purpose has been achieved. Please keep your promise, Edward, stop bothering Ulysses. I need to go back now. Please pick up the cigarette butts here before you leave. Don't dirty this civilized city. Goodbye."
Evelyn's beautiful face remained expressionless as she spoke indifferently, then turned and walked away.
Bart shivered coldly, startled by the cold and ruthless aura of Evelyn.
The Evelyn he remembered was such a gentle beauty, always smiling and very gentle, like a little sun whenever she saw Edward.
But now, that unique light belonging to Edward was nowhere to be seen.
'What has Edward done to turn the warm Evelyn into this cold and ruthless Evelyn?' she wondered.
"Lily, stop right there," Edward gasped for breath, urgently calling out to Evelyn. "I didn't tell you to leave, how can you just walk away?"
"Ridiculous, why should I listen to you?" Evelyn's voice was cold. "When you dumped me, you were so happy, making me leave in such a hurry, settling Nicole in a good place, even rushing me to leave without delay, urging me to eat at the restaurant. Now I understand you very well. I'll disappear from your sight on my own accord. How else do you want to provoke me? What more do you want?"
'Dump? Such a harsh word!' Edward's heart trembled.
Instantly, the shameful feeling of guilt turned into a painful sensation that spread to Edward's limbs, the stinging pain making him very irritable, his eyes reddening. "I made it clear before we got married, Lily, that we had a contractual marriage, and I couldn't give you a future. When we divorced, I compensated you, but you didn't want it, choosing to leave without taking any property. Lily, I never made you suffer, never treated you unfairly. Don't make me out to be a criminal, or act like you've made great sacrifices for me. Even if we can't part amicably, you shouldn't always trample on my dignity, Lily Brown. You don't owe me, and I don't owe you anything. You have no right to treat me like this!"
