Chapter 440 May Is Here
Completely engulfed in immense shock, there was even a moment of utter silence!
"Evelyn." Evelyn's brothers were also caught off guard.
They never expected that Evelyn, who had always kept silent and avoided talking about her marriage, would openly admit in front of the media that she and Edward were once married!
She was fearless and straightforward.
She used to be ashamed of that failed marriage, considering it a stain on her life, making it hard to speak about.
But now, she had come to terms with that dark past and let it go.
She and Edward had just met at the wrong time.
But fortunately, they were the right people for each other.
The next moment, the blinding flash of cameras engulfed both Evelyn and Edward!
Edward's brows furrowed deeply, and he quickly moved to shield Evelyn, like an unbreakable wall, protecting her from any potential harm from the outside world!
"Ms. Taylor! Is what you said true? Were you and Mr. Wellington married?"
"Was it a secret marriage? When did you get divorced? Do you have children?"
"Why did you get divorced? Was it because of Nicole's involvement? Was there a third party?"
The reporters bombarded Evelyn with questions, each one sharper than the last!
"Our divorce was not Evelyn's fault at all; it was all my..."
Edward felt a sharp pain in his chest and was about to take all the blame for the failed marriage when Evelyn suddenly grabbed his hand tightly.
Edward turned around abruptly, meeting her intense gaze.
"You don't need to tell them anything. It's all in the past. I don't need your explanation, and I don't want to hear that name again," Evelyn whispered hoarsely into his ear.
Edward's breath hitched, and his heart ached unbearably.
To him, what was more painful than her holding a grudge against him forever was her understanding.
"The reason for our divorce is a private matter between Mr. Wellington and me, and we have no comment."
Evelyn remained calm and turned her cold gaze back to Tiffany and Debra, "I am only revealing this to prove that what I said is not baseless speculation, but something I witnessed firsthand, the actions of Mrs. Wellington and Ms. Wellington."
"I hope the reporters here won't be deceived by their hypocritical faces and will focus more on the victims."
Her eyes were sharp, and her words were powerful:
"I believe that when you all first entered the media industry, it was to seek the truth, to find the real source of tragedies, and to uphold justice with the truth. There are still many places in this world that are shrouded in darkness, and many innocent people are suffering. If the news media can't speak up for the victims, who else will?"
Her impassioned words made almost all the reporters present lower their cameras.
Yes, they once had a burning passion, ideals, and ambitions as journalists!
But the news environment in Mugden was so corrupt, with major conglomerates controlling the media, making them afraid to speak out; the allure of quick, sensationalized news in the information age had made them focus more on celebrity gossip and the private lives of the wealthy.
Because only these stories had the potential to go viral, only these stories had heat.
At this moment, a reporter bravely thrust a microphone in Tiffany's face and asked sternly.
"Mrs. Wellington, is it true, as Ms. Taylor said, that you have abused servants and trampled on others' dignity? Did Kimberly suffer unfair treatment from you before her death?"
Tiffany was stunned!
She had never expected that the media she had invited would turn against her and target her!
Edward's strong hand secretly held Evelyn's small hand tightly.
"Evelyn, you are amazing, much stronger than I. Compared to you, I feel so inadequate." Edward looked at her deeply and smiled bitterly, "I feel so unworthy of you now."
Then, he leaned close to her ear and whispered tenderly, "For the past thirteen years, you have been following me. For the rest of our lives, let me chase after you."
Evelyn's heart trembled, and her fingers gently curled.
Other reporters also started asking questions, surrounding Tiffany and Debra.
Tiffany and Debra were forced to sweat profusely, constantly defending themselves, "No! It's not like that! Don't listen to Evelyn's one-sided story!"
"Mrs. Wellington, at this point, what is there left to deny?"
Suddenly, a familiar voice broke through the crowd, filled with genuine anger.
Evelyn and Edward were both shocked and looked up!
The person storming over was May!
"May!"
"Ms. Taylor, Mr. Wellington."
May walked up to them and bowed first, "I'm sorry for coming here without your permission."
"I know you didn't tell me because you didn't want me to be sad, but Kimberly was like a daughter to me."
May's voice choked, her eyes red with grief, "We spent so much time together, I couldn't not come to see her off."
"May, I'm sorry," Edward sighed, feeling guilty for keeping it from her.
Evelyn stepped forward and hugged May, gently patting her back, sharing her silent sorrow.
After the sadness, May stared at Tiffany with hatred, "Ms. Taylor is right. Not just Kimberly, but countless servants have suffered under the Wellington family over the years!"
"I've been a servant for the Wellington family for almost thirty years. What Ms. Taylor knows, I know, and what Ms. Taylor doesn't know, I also know!"
"Ms. Taylor hasn't wronged her with a single word!"
"May! Are you out of your mind, or have you been bribed by Evelyn to slander us?"
Tiffany pointed at May, furious, "You've been with the Wellington family for so long, and no one in Mugden can match the treatment you've received!"
"How can you be so greedy, taking benefits from others and then turning around to slander those who have been kind to you! Do you have any conscience?"
"Conscience, of course, I have it. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here today."
May sneered, "Some people come to mourn the dead. But you, you're here to gain benefits from the dead!"
"May! How dare you!"
"And don't talk nonsense. The ones who have been kind to me are the former Mrs. Wellington and Mr. Wellington. My treatment wasn't given by the Wellington family; it was given by Mr. Wellington. What does it have to do with you?" May retorted, unable to hold back any longer, and spat.
