Chapter 564 Strong Alliance, the Alexander Family in Trouble (5)
Helen, provoked by Gilbert, stormed off to Hameen overnight, reeking of alcohol.
Charlie was home tonight, with Hubert helping him take his medication and Donna checking his blood pressure.
Charlie had been so infuriated by Evelyn these past few days that his blood pressure was through the roof. Yet, as the chairman of KnightSpear Group, a top-tier mogul, he couldn't find any trace of Evelyn.
Days had passed, and his initial rage had gradually turned into pure concern for Evelyn's safety, his emotions slowly stabilizing.
He kept asking Landon and the others about Evelyn, but they remained tight-lipped.
They knew Charlie's intense reactions and actions stemmed from his deep love for Evelyn. As long as he was worried about her, his hatred and resentment towards Edward would somewhat be diverted.
"Charlie, I'm not trying to scare you, but you really need to take care of your health."
Donna put away the blood pressure monitor; her brows furrowed. "You always talk about not having much time left, but I know you. You want to live a long life more than anyone else. You want to see your children grow up, build their own happy families, and enjoy the joy of having four generations under one roof. But if you keep neglecting your health, I'm afraid you might not see that day."
Charlie pursed his lips, looking like a boy being scolded by an adult.
Hubert smiled wryly from the side.
Among the women in the family, Donna's words were the ones Charlie could actually listen to.
"My health is deteriorating day by day, all because of Evelyn! One day she'll drive me to my grave, just to be with that bastard Edward every day."
The words slipped out, causing Charlie's heart to clench, and he fell silent.
The quiet study was filled with a sorrowful atmosphere.
"Charlie, never say such things in front of Evelyn."
Donna's expression grew more serious. "You may be used to being bossy and domineering outside, but please don't show such disrespectful behavior in front of your family. Otherwise, you'll truly become an old man who abuses his authority and lacks respect."
Charlie pressed his lips together.
"Evelyn... is already very upset."
Donna lowered her gaze, taking a deep breath. "As her family, we should support her no matter what. Not selfishly vent our emotions and hurt her."
"Charlie, I've been with you the longest. I've seen how Evelyn has grown, how strong and sensible she is, more than anyone else. Over the years, as your daughter, she may have been born with a silver spoon, but she has never demanded anything from you, stopped you, or asked for anything, right?"
Charlie's lips were pressed so hard they turned white.
"The child has never asked you for anything. Now, she just wants Edward. Why can't you grant her that?" Donna's voice trembled with emotion.
"She's ruined herself for Edward! If I keep watching her waste away... am I still her father?" Charlie's heart softened a bit, but his mouth remained stubborn.
"But Evelyn has never truly been happy."
Donna's eyes reddened. "Only when she's with Edward do I feel that she genuinely, from the bottom of her heart, feels happiness."
"But Edward..."
"Charlie, do you remember what Emily told you before she passed away? Do you remember her words?"
Charlie's spine tingled, a wave of numbness rushing to his head, his dark eyes narrowing.
Of course, he remembered.
He thought, even if one day he was old and frail, unable to speak clearly, with a paralyzed brain, he would never forget her smile and voice. Even in his final moments, recalling their time together, he would still smile like a bright-eyed, deeply affectionate young man.
"I've never lived a moment for myself."
"I hope my children, especially Evelyn... can live freely, not like me, but have the right to pursue their own happiness."
Their own happiness.
'Emily, is our daughter's choice truly her happiness?'
'What should I do?'
At that moment, there was a knock on the study door.
Before Charlie could respond, Susan burst in, shouting, "Charlie, Donna, that crazy girl from the Alexander family is here, demanding to see you and Joyce!"
"I didn't let her in; she's causing a scene in the front yard! I can smell the alcohol on her; she's probably drunk!"
"Are you talking about Elbert's daughter Helen? What is she doing here?"
Charlie exhaled angrily, "What kind of upbringing does the Alexander family have? A young girl showing up unannounced at night, treating the Taylor family like it's some random place?"
Susan crossed her arms in frustration. "I asked her what she wanted, but she was too drunk to make sense. She just kept saying it had nothing to do with her, but I don't know what she's talking about."
"Nothing to do with her? She has the nerve to say that!"
Donna's eyes narrowed, and she stood up, a chill in the air. "She wants to see Joyce because she thinks Joyce is soft-hearted and easy to talk to. She thinks she can talk her way out of what she's done."
Charlie was stunned, "Donna, what's going on?"
"At the party the other night, Jennifer was almost assaulted by Randy, and Helen played a significant role in it."
Donna's eyes were bloodshot with anger. "William tried to get to Jennifer, but Helen and her people blocked him, injuring him severely! His left shoulder wound worsened, and he almost lost sight in his left eye!"
"Lost sight?" Charlie and Susan were shocked, unable to believe it!
They had seen William with his left eye bandaged these past few days, but they never imagined he was so seriously injured!
"Even so, William didn't think about himself. He immediately, with Evelyn and the others, rescued Jennifer from danger."
"Randy took Jennifer away, and Helen immediately blocked William. Isn't that aiding Randy? She must have known about Randy's vile actions; she was complicit!"
"Damn it, that vile witch!" Susan clenched her fists so tightly they cracked, ready to call Cody again.
"Despicable! Absolutely despicable!"
Charlie was livid, his temples throbbing with anger. He grabbed an expensive antique cup and hurled it against the opposite wall. "The Alexander family kids are getting worse by the day! That shameless Helen dares to bully William? I'll teach her a lesson myself!"
Before he could move, both Donna and Susan held him back.
"Charlie, she's not worth it. You are far too distinguished to lower yourself to deal with her. She doesn't deserve it."
Donna's eyes were dark and serious as she looked at Susan. "Susan, have the butler throw her out. Don't let that filth upset Joyce and Jennifer, and don't dirty the air of Oasis Villa."
Outside, Helen was stubbornly arguing with the butler, acting like a shrew, insisting on seeing Charlie and Joyce.
The butler, who had initially been polite, lost his patience and gave her a hard shove, causing her to stumble and fall.
Helen, already unsteady from drinking, fell hard, her skirt riding up in a humiliating display.
The butler quickly turned his face away.
At that moment, a bucket of yellowish, foul-smelling liquid came pouring down from above, drenching Helen from head to toe.
She raised her arm to sniff and nearly vomited.
What was that smell?
It was sour and rancid, making her gag.
"Who? Who did this to me?" Helen screamed like an enraged dog, looking up at the sky.
"Who told you to disturb the peace here?"
Susan walked out from the main door, her chin slightly raised, her steps confident. "Shut your filthy mouth and get lost."
"It was you! You did this to me!" Helen glared at her, shivering in the cold wind.
"What makes you think it was me? It could have been rain from the sky, who says it can't be something else?"
The liquid was actually fermented brine Susan used for pickling, sour-smelling but not actual sewage. She had considered using real sewage but decided against dirtying her own yard for Helen's sake.
"Sewage? Ugh..." Helen's face turned pale as she dry-heaved.
"You know what you've done. We haven't pursued it, and you should be grateful instead of coming here to cause trouble."
"Now get lost before you make things worse for yourself." Susan pinched her nose, her face full of disgust.
Helen, realizing she was getting nowhere and only humiliating herself, spat angrily on the ground before leaving the Taylor Mansion in a stinking, disheveled state.
"No wonder..."
After hearing Donna's explanation, Charlie finally understood. "I was wondering why the Alexander family was suddenly in trouble and why Zachary was arrested. So it was Edward's doing?"
"Yes, it was Mr. Wellington. He did it to avenge Jennifer and to show the Alexander family that our children are not to be messed with."
Charlie's expression softened, deep in thought.
Donna watched his face closely, sensing that he was beginning to see Edward in a slightly better light.
This was a task Evelyn had given her over the phone a few days ago: to find an opportunity to explain the situation to Charlie and credit Edward for it, hoping to improve his image.
Originally, Donna had been unsure how to bring it up.
But with Helen's visit tonight, she had the perfect opportunity.
"Wait."
Charlie's brows furrowed again. "Something doesn't add up. Wasn't it Simon who went to arrest them? If Edward planned it all, why would Simon get involved? If you said Evelyn arranged it, that would make more sense."
"And this method of making someone suffer without killing them doesn't seem like Edward's style. It sounds more like Evelyn's handiwork."
Donna's eyes flickered as she linked her arm with Charlie's. "Charlie, it's late. You should get some rest."
These days, Evelyn had been avoiding staying at her place in Mugden, fearing Charlie would find her. She didn't want to stay in a hotel either, so she and Edward had been staying at Eric and Molly's love nest.
The happiest person was Molly.
She adored Evelyn and missed her dearly due to their infrequent meetings. Now that she had the chance, she stuck to Evelyn like glue, following her everywhere.
This left Edward with only the nighttime to be alone with Evelyn.
So every night, he would cling to her in bed, not stopping until she was exhausted and begging for mercy, as if making up for the lost time during the day.
The last time they tried to bake a cake, they were interrupted by Ulysses. Tonight, with everyone home, Molly donned a pink apron, eager to show off her skills and bake a big cake for Evelyn and Edward.
Evelyn had been lying in bed, watching a show and waiting.
But as night fell and her stomach growled, there was still no sign of the cake.
Unable to wait any longer, Evelyn went downstairs to check.
Just as she reached the living room and was about to enter the kitchen, she was stunned to see Eric pressing Molly's delicate body against the counter, pinning her wrists above her head, kissing her passionately.
Molly let out soft, sweet moans as Eric's hand lifted her slender leg.
Evelyn's mouth fell open, her face flushing with embarrassment.
Before she could react, a warm embrace enveloped her from behind, the man's strong scent surrounding her.
"Don't be surprised, Evelyn. This happens here every day."
Edward's lips brushed against her reddened ear, his eyes gentle. "Let them have their moment. Let's not disturb them, okay?"
"But..."
Evelyn leaned into his embrace, torn between laughter and tears. "Well, my girl has grown up and become a real woman."
Edward's body tensed, his breath heavy as he scooped Evelyn up in his arms. "Evelyn, we need to make the most of our time too."
Evelyn clung to his neck, her heart racing, her cheeks flushed. "What?"
His lips brushed her forehead repeatedly, his voice husky, "What do you think?"
