Chapter 268 Edward Uses the Ruse of Self-Injury

In the end, Donna handed over two new meds from her family's pharma group to Evelyn—one for internal injuries and one for external ones.

Next day, Evelyn sent William to drop off the meds to Edward.

Edward, seeing William—who he considered a rival 'cause of his closeness to Evelyn—didn't wanna show any weakness outta some weird pride.

But when he saw William came alone, his hopeful heart sank, and all the energy he had just fizzled out.

"Where's Evelyn?" Edward asked.

"Evelyn's super busy and asked me to bring the meds to you." William placed the pricey and rare meds on the bedside table, giving Edward's pale face a cold look. "Evelyn said the external stuff should be applied three times a day. The internal one, once a day. She'll send me again in two weeks. This stuff works well but has side effects like puking and dizziness. Everyone's different. If you have a bad reaction, let Evelyn know ASAP, got it?"

Edward frowned but stayed quiet.

"This... this stuff is so risky. Will it cause any problems?" Bart worried Edward might suffer from taking it, but since it was from Evelyn, he didn't dare say much and just muttered softly.

"Your life, your call. If you're scared Evelyn's gonna harm you, don't take it. Totally up to you." With that, William turned to leave.

"I won't take this medicine," Edward said lightly, barely moving his lips.

William spun around, shocked. "Not take it? What do you mean?"

'When I came to see Edward, Evelyn specifically told me to make sure he takes the meds on time, or his health's in danger. And now, he says he won't take it? How do I report back?' William thought.

"Unless Evelyn comes to see me, I won't take this medicine. Otherwise, I won't accept her kindness." Edward lowered his eyelids and coughed weakly twice. "Thirteen years ago, I saved her life. Thirteen years later, I did it again. Even if we're divorced, and she hates me, she has to admit I'm her savior. She can't just dismiss me like this."

"Edward, you..."

William almost blurted out "taking advantage," but Edward cut him off, "At the very least, this time, I want her to come and take care of me sincerely."

'Sincerely? Take care?'

William was so mad his eyes turned red, and his knuckles went white from clenching his fists.

"Exactly!" Bart, who usually had perfect timing, saw through Edward's thoughts and quickly played the sympathy card. "To save Ms. Taylor, Edward's been through so much! He's in so much pain he can't eat or sleep well. He even coughed up blood this morning! Every day, I'm scared Edward won't wake up the next morning! Ms. Taylor treating her savior like this is too heartless!"

Edward's brow twitched violently, thinking, 'Bart, you're overdoing it!'

William gritted his teeth and stormed out without another word.

As the door closed, Edward's shoulders slumped, and his bright eyes seemed to dull. Suddenly, he leaned forward, his chest heaving, and spat out a mouthful of blood!

"Edward, Edward?" Bart freaked out, hurriedly pressing the call button by the bed and fumbling to wipe the blood from Edward's lips with a tissue. "Edward! You can't go on like this! Don't be mad at Mrs. Wellington anymore! Since she sent the meds, let's take them quickly!"

"No." Edward endured the severe chest pain, his attitude stubborn, his eyes showing deep sadness. "This is my only chance to spend time with her. Even if it costs my life, I must see Evelyn."

"What? He refuses to take the meds? Why?" Evelyn was dining with her family when William called her out to relay the message, making her so mad she lost her appetite.

"He said he'd only take the meds if he saw you." William was furious, his eyes wide with anger. "He's gone too far! You've already done your best. In my opinion, let him fend for himself. Don't bother with him anymore!"

"Prepare the car. We're going to Mugden!" Evelyn, her eyes red, gave the order and left William in a hurry to change her clothes.

"Evelyn!" William watched her hurriedly departing figure, his heart tightening with an indescribable bitterness.

Edward's hospitalization was kept on the down-low from the Wellington family.

At his level, even his health had to be top-secret. Too many folks inside and outside the Wellington Group were gunning for his spot. If word got out, they'd use it to take him down.

With all the internal and external drama, he'd been walking a tightrope for years.

All 'cause he wasn't Patrick's golden boy.

Tonight, the only visitor was still Eric.

Edward didn't mention coughing up blood today, worried Eric would freak out and waste time trying to fix things.

"You really got it rough," Eric said, lounging on the sofa with a smirk. Seeing Edward looking pale and beat, he couldn't help but tease, "Look at you now. Just a few months ago, you were on top of the world."

Edward's eyelashes fluttered. "What are you getting at?"

"Back then, you had a sweet wife at home and a fiery lover on the side. You were living the dream," Eric added.

"Eric." Edward's face turned ashen, almost spitting blood in anger.

"I remember you used to complain about how annoyed you were. Every time you went home and saw the doting Lily, you felt all itchy. I was so jealous of you back then!" Eric sighed, his tone tinged with resentment.

He felt bad for Evelyn and regretted that Edward had lost her.

"Back then, I wasn't really annoyed with Evelyn."

Thinking of Evelyn's kindness, Edward felt like a dull knife was cutting into his heart. "I was cold to her to make her see reality and divorce me. I couldn't give her a future. Keeping her around was just wasting her time and life."

"And now? You keep messing with Evelyn. What's your deal?" Eric tilted his head, slowly pulling out a cigarette and placing it between his lips.

Remembering they were in a hospital, Eric didn't light it, just held it for comfort.

Edward was silent for a long time, taking a deep breath and voicing softly, "Eric, I think I might have fallen for her."

The cigarette between Eric's lips trembled, and he almost jumped up!

Even though it was obvious to everyone that Edward had long been infatuated with Evelyn without realizing it, hearing him admit it was still shocking.

"I've fallen for Evelyn, so I want her back by my side. I want to try to pursue her." Edward suddenly looked up, his voice trembling as he expressed his feelings.

"You? Pursue her? Can you do it? Are you sure?" Eric's eyebrows shot up in surprise, bombarding him with questions.

"Everyone has a first time. Whether I can or not, I have to try." Edward glanced at him, "Besides, if I can't, there's still your help."

"It's not that my methods of pursuing women don't work, but Evelyn is flawless. What can I help you with?" Eric pouted in frustration, "She outshines you in every way. She's always one step ahead of you. Out of the three of us, I'm at the bottom of the food chain. How can I possibly help you to win her over? I'd be lucky to survive this!"

Edward's thin lips curled into a rare smile.

"Besides, it's gonna be tough to win Evelyn back now. You gotta be ready to fail a bunch of times," Eric said.

"It doesn't matter. I'll just keep pursuing her. Whether she agrees or not is up to her." Edward's eyes were resolute, unwavering, "I probably have a long life ahead, and I won't love any other woman except her. I'll take my time."

Just as he finished speaking, the door to the ward was forcefully pushed open, and Evelyn stormed in. "Edward! You refuse to take the medicine I sent unless you see me? Are you taking your life as a joke? What do you mean by this?"

The first person Evelyn saw upon entering was Eric.

Seeing the cigarette between his lips, she was furious. She rushed over, snatched the cigarette, and threw it on the ground, crushing it with her high heel.

"Smoking? Don't you know he has lung injuries and can't inhale smoke? Are you his friend or a devil?" Evelyn shouted.

Seeing her anxious demeanor, the smile in Edward's eyes deepened.

"No, Evelyn, I didn't even light it!" Eric's expression was one of pure grievance.

"Get out of here with your cigarette, now!" Evelyn, eyes red with anger, pointed to the door.

Eric looked to Edward for help.

Edward didn't even glance at him, calmly saying, "If she tells you to leave, then leave."

'Edward, you betray me for a woman!' Eric thought.
