Chapter 247 Sharp Tongue
Seeing Edward and Gordon stroll in one after the other, everyone was caught off guard.
"Byron, Gordon's a real gem. If it wasn't for him, Debra wouldn't have gotten out so easily. Hes a rockstar," Patrick said, hyping Gordon up to Byron. "So, I'm thinking of making him the head of the legal department for the Wellington Group. What do you think?"
"Mr. Byron Wellington, I've heard a lot about you. It's a real honor to meet you today," Gordon said, flashing a polite smile and giving a little bow.
"Gordon, are you Brian's eldest son?" Byron asked, giving him a once-over.
"Yeah, that's my dad," Gordon said, beaming with pride. "You know him?"
"Of course, I know him," Byron replied. "Back in the day, Gary's case was judged by Brian. He was fair and square, sentenced my son to four years."
Everyone was floored!
Gordon's face went pale, and his smile vanished.
Memories came flooding back, and that dark past cracked open a wound in Patrick's heart, making his face darken. Edward caught this subtle change.
"Brian's a top-notch guy, but not very flexible. I'm sorry for what he did back then," Gordon said, trying to smooth things over. Seeing Byron so serious, he figured there might be some old grudge and quickly bowed to apologize.
"Interesting," Byron said, raising an eyebrow. "What did Brian do wrong? Why are you apologizing for him?"
Gordon was stunned, his face stiff.
"As a judge, being upright and fair is the bare minimum, right? By apologizing for him, are you saying he was wrong back then?" Byron asked.
"You misunderstood. I didn't mean that," Gordon said, laughing awkwardly.
"I've heard a lot about you. You're known for only taking cases for the rich, from celebrities to tycoons. Many have dealt with you," Byron sneered. "If you hadn't said you were Brian's son, I wouldn't have connected you two. Your way of doing things is quite different from his."
Anyone could hear the sarcasm dripping from Byron's words!
He was questioning Gordon's character.
Edward couldn't help but smirk, while Patrick and Tiffany's faces soured.
Just then, Tyler rushed in and said, "Ms. Taylor has arrived."
Edward's heart skipped a beat.
Everyone's eyes turned to the door.
The sharp click of high heels echoed, each step like a hammer on Edward's heart.
Evelyn walked in alone, into the place she had lived for three years, but the cold and noble aura she exuded was just like the first time she came here.
In an instant, Edward's vision blurred.
It felt like they hadn't divorced at all.
"Byron, I'm here," Evelyn said, smiling brightly, her eyes sparkling, and walked straight towards Byron without a glance to the side.
When she passed by Edward, she didn't pause for a moment, as if they were complete strangers.
Edward's breath hitched, his fingers slowly clenched, and his heart sank.
After the divorce, every time he saw Evelyn, it felt like enduring a cruel torture, a catastrophic disaster.
"Evelyn!" Debra murmured, staring at Evelyn's beautiful face. If Tiffany hadn't held her back, she would've torn Evelyn apart!
"Hey, isn't this Gordon? What a small world," Evelyn said, stopping in her tracks and flashing a smile at him.
Gordon was caught off guard!
Everyone else was too, thinking, 'Gordon? That sounds pretty familiar. Do they know each other well?'
"Ms. Taylor, long time no see," Gordon forced a smile, trying to keep it formal.
"Yeah, it's been what, five or six years since you last visited my dad? He mentioned you recently. Our families go way back. I remember when I was a kid, Uncle Brian would bring you and William over to our place all the time. We haven't kept in touch much lately, and we've drifted apart," Evelyn said, her eyes landing on Patrick's surprised face. "Mr. Patrick Wellington, you probably didn't know, right? Uncle Brian and his three sons were regulars at our house. After Uncle Brian retired, he even served as the head of the legal department for KnightSpear Group for a while. But Uncle Brian's a low-key guy, so not many people know about it."
Gordon's smile was forced, and his cheeks burned.
Evelyn's words, though casually spoken, cut deep!
The last thing Gordon wanted to bring up was how his family had once leaned on the Taylor family. He had to admit, his success today was partly thanks to their support!
Now, trying to make a name for himself and change his status, he needed to break free from the Taylor family's shadow!
"I didn't expect Gordon to be so close to the Taylor family," Patrick said, his tone loaded with meaning.
"Brian did serve as a legal advisor for KnightSpear Group for a few years, but he's been retired for a long time. I haven't had any contact with the Taylor family for years," Gordon quickly said, trying to distance himself.
Evelyn's eyes narrowed, her smile turning cold and mocking. "You shouldn't forget, when Uncle Brian retired, the Flynn family went through a major upheaval. If it weren't for Charlie's help, your family would've had a hard time getting through it. Charlie did Brian a favor back then, and your family benefited a lot from ours. We never expected you to repay us. But you shouldn't team up with outsiders to trip me up."
Evelyn's red lips curved into a cold, beautiful sneer. "Ungrateful, kicking down the ladder—is this your lawyer's code?"
Evelyn's powerful words seemed to rip off Gordon's mask, slapping a big label of ingratitude on him!
'Don't want to be associated with the Taylor family? Fine. I'll lay it all out. I'll expose your hidden thoughts!' Evelyn thought.
Gordon's lips tightened, though he still wore a smile. His gaze at Evelyn was icy.
The atmosphere turned both tense and awkward.
Patrick felt that every time he saw Evelyn, she stirred up trouble!
Gordon was a top-notch lawyer, and Patrick had always wanted him on his team. But knowing about his connection with the Taylor family makes Patrick uneasy.
"It turns out the Flynn family has such a hidden past with the Taylor family," Edward said, his words aimed at Gordon, but his deep gaze never left Evelyn. "So, Ms. Taylor is the daughter of your family's benefactor. And you repeatedly taking sides against Ms. Taylor—is this how you repay kindness?"
Evelyn couldn't help but frown, wanting to cut Edward off.
'Is he standing up for me? Siding with me, an outsider, in front of his family?'
'When we were married, Edward never stood by my side, so what's he doing now?' she thought.
