Chapter 473 Should I Tell Him?
The next day, Evelyn, Edward, and others took the Taylor family's private jet to return to Mugden.
Nancy and Wade couldn't go back with them; they had to return to Aurora Isle immediately.
The governmental affairs on Aurora Isle were overwhelming, and Nancy and Wade's personal schedules had taken up too much time. For people of their high status, time was the most luxurious commodity.
They traveled light, but Evelyn was still worried, so she asked Ulysses to escort them back, ensuring they had someone to look after them along the way.
On the plane, Adrian, who wasn't used to waking up early, was catching up on sleep.
The others gathered with serious expressions.
"Edward, Landon said you figured out who Sebastian was working for. Who's behind the scenes ordering him to kill you?" Evelyn had held back for too long and finally asked.
Landon and Eric also looked ready, waiting for his answer.
Edward's brows furrowed slightly as he gazed deeply at Evelyn. "Evelyn, if I tell you, will you believe me? I'm afraid you won't accept the answer."
"Is it Gilbert?" Evelyn's eyes were profound.
Landon and Eric were shocked.
Edward's pupils contracted. "Evelyn, how did you know?"
"When you were unconscious, Nancy and Wade had a long talk with me. They also suspected that Gilbert and Sebastian were secretly colluding. After all, when he was on Aurora Isle, he had frequent interactions with people from Torontow."
Evelyn then told them about Nancy and Wade's experiences over the years.
"It really was him. I knew he wasn't a good person!" Eric gritted his teeth in anger.
"I don't understand. If it really was him, I can understand why he'd want to harm you, but Landon has no grudges against him. Why would he want to kill him, too?" Evelyn felt a chill in her heart, her cold hands clenched into fists.
"No grudges, that's just what you see. I have a big feud with him." Landon's eyes were cold as he smirked. "Privately, this isn't the first time I've clashed with him. We've had verbal confrontations, but it never escalated to a fight."
Evelyn's beautiful eyes were full of shock.
When did Landon do all this? She had no idea!
"I noticed early on that Gilbert was up to some tricks behind the scenes. Although he did it out of his affection for you, his actions were despicable to me. That's why I strongly opposed you two being together and repeatedly warned him to stay away from you."
Edward's heart sank. Having clashed with Gilbert multiple times, he knew Gilbert far better than Evelyn did.
Evelyn and Gilbert had a youthful bond, but he didn't. He knew Gilbert was petty and vengeful, the kind who would go to extremes. In plain terms, he was small-minded!
"If love has to rely on schemes and tricks to be obtained, then that love isn't pure and loses its original, sacred meaning."
Landon's eyes were full of love and worry as he looked at Evelyn. "The thought of you being in contact with someone like that makes me restless. He has no bottom line and will stop at nothing. Who knows if one day he might use those same tactics on you."
"Evelyn, you're my dearest sister, my lifeline. I can't gamble with your happiness; I can't afford to lose."
Landon's heartfelt words brought tears to Evelyn's eyes. "Landon."
Landon gently ruffled Evelyn's hair and then asked Edward, "Mr. Wellington, since you suspected it was Gilbert when you were on South Island, why didn't you tell me then? Maybe we could have found a way to deal with him sooner and caught him red-handed."
Edward sighed deeply, a bitter smile tugging at his lips. "I despise Gilbert, but it was just a suspicion. No matter how reasonable the suspicion, it was still just that. I had no evidence and couldn't easily accuse him of being the mastermind."
Landon's chest swelled with complex emotions, his respect for Edward growing.
This was why, no matter how much Gilbert did for Evelyn, he always felt it couldn't compare to Edward.
No matter how polished Gilbert's exterior was, his core was rotten. But Edward, despite his flaws, had a clean soul.
"Moreover, Gilbert is a friend Evelyn cherishes."
Edward stopped there, saying no more.
Evelyn's heart tightened, and a sharp pain in her throat. "So you didn't say anything then because you were afraid I'd be angry?"
"Yes." Edward's eyes curved in a somewhat embarrassed smile. "Being so cautious, it's not very manly, is it?"
"I planned to investigate him quickly after leaving South Island, but I almost didn't make it back alive. This is my fault; I didn't think it through."
How humble. In front of her, the high-and-mighty Edward lowered himself to the dust, afraid that any misstep would anger her and undo all the goodwill he had painstakingly regained.
"You're so foolish, Edward, so foolish." Evelyn's lashes lowered, her eyes brimming with tears, her heart aching so much she could barely speak.
She recalled countless times when she had quarreled fiercely with Edward over Gilbert, feeling it was utterly ridiculous.
Fortunately, Edward's love for her was steadfast.
Otherwise, anyone else would have been driven away long ago.
The plane flew steadily towards Mugden, and the cabin was quiet. Eric, exhausted, had already fallen asleep.
Evelyn and Edward leaned against each other, heads touching. Edward squeezed her small hand, warm and soft, the warmth flowing from his fingertips straight to his heart.
Suddenly, Edward's expression tightened as he felt something unusual about the bone in her left pinky finger.
"Evelyn, what happened to your pinky? Was it injured?"
Evelyn's breath hitched, her body trembling in his arms.
"Evelyn, what's wrong?" Edward didn't know what was happening, and his heart began to race.
Should she tell him?
Should she tell him that the girl who fought alongside him on the Liberland battlefield, dragging his severely injured body back to camp and losing a finger in the process, was her?
