Chapter 325 Jessica Comes to Flatter
In the early hours, after putting Molly to sleep, Eric rushed to the hospital to meet up with the Taylor family and the Wellington family.
Byron was old andcouldn't hold on any longer, so Patrick helped him find a comfortable VIP room to rest.
"Landon, I just finished interrogating that guy."
Landon stepped outside the hallway to take Peter's call. "I've been a detective for many years. I could tell at a glance that the man was hiding something, but he just wouldn't say it!"
"What did he say?" Landon asked in a low voice.
"He said he attacked Joyce because he used to be a fervent fan of hers. After Joyce had that incident and left the scene, he felt betrayed by her. He harbored resentment, feeling that Joyce had deceived his feelings back then. What kind of nonsense is that!" Peter vented his pent-up frustration to Landon.
Landon frowned and replied, "Get to the point."
Peter added, "Sorry, Landon, I got too angry and went off track."
Peter collected his thoughts and said in a low voice, "He said he attacked Joyce on impulse because seeing her in the public eye again brought back painful memories. But I can't believe that for a second. He must have been instigated by someone!"
"You've been investigating all night, and your findings align with my thoughts," Landon said calmly.
Peter said helplessly, "Landon, I'm at a dead end. The evidence I have so far only leads to this. And this man is very cunning; his phone is clean, with no traces of being instigated. He probably has another phone and planned this meticulously."
Landon, "You need to dig deeper into his background. If he was hired, it means this isn't the first time he's done something like this. There should be other victims."
"What if this was his first time?" Peter asked.
Landon narrowed his eyes and said coldly, "I still wouldn't believe his confession. Everything is too coincidental; it's clearly a setup. I must thoroughly investigate who is behind this attempt to seriously harm Joyce."
Peter replied, "I understand, Landon. I won't let our family suffer in vain."
Peter hesitated and asked, "How is Edward?"
"He's still not out of danger," Landon said.
Peter didn't know what to say.
Landon continued, "But I believe he will pull through because Evelyn is performing the craniotomy on him. The surgery has been going on for five hours."
Peter was stunned, "Craniotomy? Does Evelyn think ahead is like a watermelon that she can just split open? I'm telling you, Landon, Evelyn's way of getting back at her ex-husband is quite unique!"
"We have to trust in White God's medical skills." Landon thought of the multi-talented Evelyn, his lips curling into a smile, his eyes full of affection.
Peter asked in surprise, "White God?"
Peter was stunned and shouted, "That miracle doctor who has been featured in newspapers and magazines multiple times, saving critically ill patients—White God is Evelyn?"
Landon proudly nodded, "Yes, it's her."
Peter was shocked.
The next day, at 9 AM.
The Wellington family gathered outside the operating room again. Patrick was still supporting Byron, and they all stared intently at the operating room door.
Tiffany had already gone home with Debra, using the excuse of feeling unwell. Byron disliked her and she didn't care about Edward's fate. So she didn't even bother to pretend and went home to get her beauty sleep.
"It's been so long, why isn't Evelyn out yet?"
"It's been so long, why isn't Evelyn out yet?" Charlie sat in the hallway, constantly looking towards the operating room, feeling anxious.
Landon replied, "A craniotomy is no small surgery; it's not unheard of for it to take a whole day and night."
Landon gently patted Charlie's back to comfort him softly, "Don't worry, Evelyn is stronger and more capable than you think. She will definitely succeed in this surgery."
Charlie said, "I'm not worried about that. I'm worried about Evelyn standing for a whole day and night. Can her small frame handle it? Is she tired? Has she had a chance to eat or drink?"
The more Charlie asked, the more worried he became. If Landon hadn't held him back, he would have rushed in to check on Evelyn.
Landon smiled wryly, "Dad, I thought you were worried about Edward."
Charlie looked at Byron's anxious and dejected figure, his brows furrowing slightly, "Edward did save my Evelyn this time, so he gets some points. From negative to zero."
Landon pressed his lips together, keeping his promise to Evelyn to keep her secret, so he didn't say anything.
Edward had saved Evelyn before. Last time at Thunder Peak, he almost didn't make it back alive for her.
Landon said, "Dad, I have a question for you. If..."
Jessica cried, "Edward! Edward!"
Before Landon could finish, a tearful cry interrupted him.
The previously quiet and oppressive atmosphere in the hallway changed, and Edward and Patrick also turned around.
Jessica, in high heels, ran crying to the group.
Eric asked, "Jessica, why are you here?"
Eric quickly stepped forward to stop her, commanding in a deep voice, "This is not the place for you to make a scene. Go home immediately!"
Jessica raised her face to meet his gaze, her eyes cold and mocking.
Eric was taken aback.
He felt that this look was terrifyingly unfamiliar as if their twenty-plus years of sibling bond had been severed. He couldn't see any trust or reliance on him in her eyes anymore.
The next second, Jessica gritted her teeth and pushed Eric away, running straight to Edward and Patrick.
Jessica asked, "Grandpa Wellington! Uncle Patrick! How is Edward? Has he woken up?"
Jessica's round face was pale and haggard from crying, her eyes red and swollen, and her sobs were pitiful.
"Who is this?" Byron looked at the tearful Jessica, puzzled.
Patrick answered, "Dad, this is Eric's younger sister, Jessica from the Clark family."
Patrick was moved by Jessica's tears for Edward and spoke kindly, "When she was little, Eric often brought her to our house. She and Edward have always been close, like siblings. Later, Jessica went abroad to study, so she didn't visit as often. She just came back this year."
"So, she's Eric's sister," Byron understood and didn't say much.
Jessica replied, "Edward has always been very good to me since we were kids, always caring and looking out for me. In my heart, Edward is the most important person."
Jessica wiped her tears, her shoulders trembling. She choked up, "When I heard about his accident last night, I was so heartbroken that I couldn't sleep. I wanted to come over last night, but Eric wouldn't let me. I was also afraid of causing trouble for you all. I was being immature. I should have come earlier; maybe I could have helped somehow."
Patrick said, "Ah, good child, you have a kind heart."
Patrick sighed, looking at Jessica with approval, "Thank you for your concern for Edward. It's childhood bond was strong. It's not just from childhood; Edward and I are still very close now."
Jessica blushed slightly, "As long as Edward needs me, I'll always be there."
Eric's face darkened.
Regardless of other things, Jessica expressing her affection for Edward in front of the Wellington family was indeed too inapproprite.
"Landon, does Eric's sister have feelings for Edward too?" Charlie nudged Landon with his elbow, enjoying the drama.
Landon straightforwardly said, "It seems so."
"And what about Edward? Does he have any interest in Miss Clark?" Charlie's eyes narrowed suspiciously.
Landon answered, "As far as I know, no."
Landon wasn't trying to speak well of Edward; he had just come to understand Edward's character through multiple interactions.
Charlie scoffed and muttered discontentedly, "All my sons are single, and any one of them is better looking and better than Edward. The Clark family has a good background too. If they have a daughter, she should be with one of our sons. Landon, why don't you go for her!"
Landon's heart skipped a beat, his eyes flickering, "I don't like women."
Charlie asked, "What did you say?"
Landon replied, "I mean, Miss Clark is not my type."
Landon coughed lightly and smiled, "Can't you see? Miss Clark already has someone in her heart. You're putting her in a difficult position."
Charlie sighed and shook his head, not pushing further.
"Thank you for still caring about Edward because of your childhood bond. I appreciate your kindness, but please go back." Byron's attitude towards Jessica was distant, without much warmth.
After all, Edward was still not out of danger, and he didn't have the energy to deal with outsiders.
Jessica said, "I heard Edward got hurt protecting Ms. Taylor."
Jessica finally had a chance to gain favor with the Wellington family elders and couldn't just leave. She said tearfully, "I can't do much for Edward, but let me stay here and pray for him. I won't leave until he wakes up."
Byron replied coldly, "That's not necessary."
Byron forced a smile and still maintained a grandfatherly warmth, "I appreciate your kindness, but I'm a materialist. Rather than believing in prayers, I believe in science."
Jessica's heart sank. She quickly explained and blushed, "I didn't mean anything else. I don't want to cause trouble for everyone. I just want to do what I can! Although my abilities are limited, at least I've never hurt Edward! I've never caused him to lie in a cold operating room and suffer."
"Jessica, stop talking!" Eric's brows furrowed deeply as he walked over to stop her.
At that moment, Byron's face turned cold, and he asked coldly, "Miss Clark, are you blaming Ms. Taylor? Do you think Ms. Taylor is responsible for Edward's condition?"
Jessica stammered, "I, I..."
Of course!
Of course, it's all that wretched Evelyn's fault!
But how could Jessica say that out loud, especially when it was clear Byron favored Evelyn?
Just then, a loud noise echoed.
Everyone turned their heads in unison as the operating room door opened!
Charlie and Landon sprang up from their seats, and the hallway, filled with people in suits, surged towards the door like a black tide.
Two medical staff came out first, followed by slow heavy footsteps.
A graceful figure walked out. Even in a loose surgical gown and mask, her beauty couldn't be hidden.
She took a deep breath and slowly removed her mask.
Even without makeup, Evelyn was still stunningly beautiful. Jessica was dumbfounded! Her mouth hung open, almost unable to believe her eyes!
How could it be?
Was Evelyn the one who performed the surgery on Edward?
"Evelyn, Evelyn!" Charlie and Byron quickly approached, each holding one of Evelyn's slightly trembling hands.
Seeing her red-rimmed eyes and the deep marks left by the mask on her face, they were heartbroken.
"Evelyn, Edward, he, he..." Byron's eyes were filled with tears, his voice trembling with worry.
Evelyn took a deep breath, holding Byron's hand tightly, her beautiful eyes slowly curving into a smile, "Grandpa, it must have been your prayers that Edward heard in his coma. I've removed the blood clot from Edward's brain. The surgery was a success."
The crowd erupted in excited cheers!
Eric closed his eyes, clutching his chest, and finally felt relieved after a night of worry.
"Good! Good! Good!" Patrick exclaimed excitedly.
"The surgery was done by Lily. You should thank Lily!" Byron glared at Patrick.
Although Patrick still had reservations about Evelyn, he didn't want to appear petty, so he walked over and said quietly, "Ms. Taylor, thank you for your help this time. Thank you for saving Edward."
Evelyn replied, "Please don't say that."
Evelyn didn't let it go to her head, just sighed, "Edward got hurt saving me. Saving him is my duty and responsibility."
"Lily! Thank you, thank you so much!" Byron hugged Evelyn, tears almost falling.
After comforting Byron, Evelyn's cold gaze suddenly fell on the stunned Jessica.
