Chapter 403 Only Evelyn Will Do
Charlie told Donna, Joyce, and Susan about the matter, and they were all quite frightened. They wanted to visit Evelyn with him, but he stopped them.
After much effort, he persuaded them and arranged for someone to send them back to Hameen.
Charlie walked out of the airport with Hubert and the bodyguards following him, and sure enough, he saw Gilbert waiting for him.
"Uncle Charlie, hello," Gilbert greeted Charlie with a gentle smile.
Charlie thought momentarily and got into Gilbert's car, with the bodyguards and Hubert's car following behind.
After all, Gilbert said he had something about Evelyn to discuss with him alone.
Originally, if someone wanted to meet a big shot like Charlie, even if they were Elbert's son, they would have to wait in line.
But Gilbert said it was about Evelyn, so Charlie couldn't just ignore it.
The luxury car smoothly headed towards the hospital.
"Uncle Charlie, lately I've been by Evelyn's side. Her emotions have been quite unstable, and she's been in a really bad mood."Gilbert's eyes were full of pain. "I've known her for so long, and it's the first time I've seen her in such agony. If you saw her, your heart would surely ache. I know how much you love her."
Charlie's heart felt like it had been pierced by an arrow;the pain was unbearable!
Everyone knew that among Charlie's many children, Evelyn was the one he loved the most; no one could compare.
Gilbert knew that Charlie's fatal vulnerability was Evelyn.
"Tell me, what exactly happened while I was away?"
Charlie anxiously looked at Gilbert. "What trouble did Evelyn encounter? Who did this to her?"
"Uncle Charlie, who do you think could make a strong girl like Evelyn so heartbroken?"
Gilbert clenched his fist secretly, his eyes turning cold. "Who hurt her back then and then abandoned her? Who kept entangling with her and hurting her again and again?"
"Edward?" Charlie's thick eyebrows furrowed deeply.
"Other than him, there could be no one else."
"Is Evelyn's car accident also related to him?"
Gilbert lightly pushed his glasses up, his eyes dark. "I only know that on the day of the accident, Evelyn went to see Edward. I don't know what unpleasant things happened between them that caused Evelyn to be so distracted on her way back that she had an accident. The car was totaled, but fortunately, she wasn't seriously injured."
"Edward, what will it take for him to stop bothering Evelyn!" Charlie angrily slammed the car door.
"There's one more thing, Uncle Charlie, I don't know if I should tell you." Gilbert hesitated.
"What else do you know about what Edward did to Evelyn? Tell me everything!" Charlie's eyes were bloodshot, trembling with anger.
Gilbert's eyes flickered, and in a low voice, he told Charlie about how Edward had sex with Evelyn when he was not in his right mind.
That day, when Edward came to apologize to Evelyn, from Edward's words to Evelyn's reaction, and through his interactions with Evelyn these days, Gilbert had almost figured out what had happened back then.
Even the parts he didn't know didn't matter.
What Edward couldn't say, he would fill in.
Charlie listened to Gilbert in silence, not saying a word the entire time.
Only his heavy, hate-filled breathing could be heard in the dim car.
"Uncle Charlie, don't get too upset, take care of your health," Gilbert said with concern.
"How much more does Edward want to torment Evelyn!" Charlie clutched his chest in anguish, his heart bleeding with pain!
"Although some bad things happened to Evelyn in the past, it's all in the past now. I will protect her well from now on."
Gilbert looked at Charlie with determined eyes. "I swear, all my love belongs to Evelyn. I will make her the happiest woman in the world.
"Uncle Charlie, I love Evelyn, and it has nothing to do with her being your daughter, or with the Alexander family, or the Taylor family."
"I love her for who she is. From childhood to now, no other woman can replace Evelyn in my heart, none."
Charlie was stunned, staring at his eyes without moving.
Previously, he indeed had issues with Gilbert and the entire Alexander family. He had never experienced a so-called business marriage and naturally didn't want Evelyn to marry someone she didn't love and live a life of misery.
But now, it seemed that Gilbert was serious about Evelyn.
He was experienced, and the overwhelming love in Gilbert's eyes when he mentioned Evelyn couldn't be faked.
Maybe he shouldn't let Evelyn be so indulgent anymore.
"Gilbert." Charlie looked at him seriously. "You know Evelyn's current situation. She once loved Edward so passionately, giving him everything."
"Maybe in the future, for a very long time, she won't be able to heal the pain in her heart or accept your feelings. No matter how sincere or passionate you are, she might not see you. Because Evelyn is my daughter, and I know her temperament best."
"Maybe you can persist for a year or two, but what about ten years, twenty years? Can you still endure her like this? Won't you regret it?"
"I know she still has Edward in her heart. But I don't care."
Gilbert's eyes were filled with tears, his gaze both relieved and sincere, making one's heart ache. "I want to marry Evelyn, no matter what has happened to her, I don't mind. My wife can only be Evelyn."
Charlie's brows furrowed deeply, and to say he wasn't moved at all would be a lie.
"Uncle Charlie, I want to ask you to give me a chance to fulfill my wish."
When Charlie arrived at the hospital, Evelyn was already asleep.
He had a lot to say to Evelyn, but seeing her thin and pale sleeping face, he felt a lump in his throat and couldn't say anything. He just wanted to quietly stay by her side and accompany her.
What else was there to say?
What had happened couldn't be undone. Saying more would only hurt her again.
In the early hours, Landon and Simon walked in.
"Dad, you should go back and rest. Evelyn will be discharged tomorrow, and we'll take her home," Landon said softly.
"I'm not tired," Charlie replied coldly, clearly harboring resentment.
"Dad, this time it's our fault; we shouldn't have kept it from you."
Simon sighed heavily, "But we did it for your health. Besides, you raised so many sons, isn't it for moments like this to support you? We can handle Evelyn's matter."
"Handle it? If you could handle it, Evelyn wouldn't be lying here suffering right now," Charlie sneered.
Landon's eyes dimmed.
Simon also pressed his lips tightly, usually eloquent, but he had nothing to say now.
"Landon, come out, I want to talk to you." Charlie stood up, his back stiff from sitting too long, causing a dull pain.
"Yes, Dad."
Landon hurriedly stepped forward to support Charlie, and the two temporarily left the ward.
In the lounge.
"What did you say?" Landon was stunned, his pupils contracting. "You want Evelyn to be with Gilbert? Why?"
"I now think that if we really want Evelyn to get out of the shadow Edward cast over her, the best way is for her to start a new relationship, to have someone who truly loves her by her side."
Charlie's eyes were deep, clearly having made up his mind. "Right now, Gilbert is so infatuated with Evelyn, and I've watched him grow up, I know him well."
"I think we should let them date and see. Maybe he can heal Evelyn's inner wounds. Evelyn can't go on like this, she needs a new beginning."
"Know him well? Do you really think you understand Gilbert?" Landon's tone grew heavier in his urgency. "Gilbert's business dealings in Aurora Isle over the years are hardly clean. Are you really comfortable letting Evelyn be with him?"
"That's in Aurora Isle, not here. And if he truly treats Evelyn well, if they really have a chance, I don't mind helping him clean up his business."
"Dad! You!" Landon was choked with anger. "Why are you suddenly like this? Evelyn won't be happy with this!"
"If I don't do this, will she be happy?" Charlie suddenly stood up, his eyes red with anger as he shouted, "From the time she wanted to be a Doctors Without Borders volunteer until now, when have I ever controlled her? I let her be free, do whatever she wanted, but has she been happy?"
"She got into a terrible marriage, lost her heart, got hurt, was abused to the point of being unrecognizable, and now she's still being bullied by Edward! Does she have to be alone for the rest of her life without Edward?"
Landon's eyes widened in shock!
He realized that Charlie already knew about the hidden matters between Evelyn and Edward.
But besides the two involved, only he knew about it for now. He hadn't revealed anything to Charlie, so how did Charlie find out? Who told him?
"Gilbert has no position in the Alexander Group, and his relationship with Elbert is just so-so. Right now, he might not be a good match for Evelyn. But it doesn't matter, as long as he truly loves Evelyn, wholeheartedly and devotedly, I don't mind giving him a hand."
Thinking of Edward made Charlie furious, wishing he could shoot Edward. "In Mugden, Edward's days of glory are numbered!"
Landon felt an indescribable frustration.
Charlie's attitude clearly indicated he was grooming Gilbert as a future son-in-law.
"Have you asked Evelyn about this decision? Will Evelyn agree to you interfering in her love life?"
"No need to ask." Charlie closed his eyes and waved his hand. "Evelyn will slowly understand that the one she loves may not be the one who suits her best, may not be the best choice."
"Only the one who loves her is suitable to walk through life with her. At the very least, she won't get hurt again."
