Chapter 265 In His Heart and Eyes, It's All About Her

Edward took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart, and muttered, "If something really happens to me, Caleb's gonna end up as CEO. I only got this gig 'cause he was too sick. If he wasn't, I'd still be in the shadows."

"Even if Caleb was fit as a fiddle, with your skills, Byron would still pick you as the heir!" Eric shot back.

Edward smirked a bit, feeling lucky to have such a positive buddy in his otherwise boring life.

"Edward, why the heck are you switching hospitals? You got hurt 'cause of Evelyn!" Eric, still in his chair, slid his long legs over to the bedside. "This is your golden chance to get close! If I were you, I'd be in her room, putting on a show, maybe even fake a dramatic cough at her door! How else will she know what you've done for her?"

"Protecting her is my job. I'm not looking for a pat on the back." Edward closed his eyes, feeling a dull ache in his chest. "I owe her. I'm just making up for the past three years."

"With your life?" Eric asked.

"Or what? Money? You know how loaded the Taylor family is, don't you?" Edward raised an eyebrow.

Eric scratched his head, "Yeah, good point."

Thinking of Evelyn's pale face in his arms, Edward felt a sharp pain in his heart.

'Is she awake? Is her fever gone? Did she break any bones hanging on that cliff?' His mind was filled with her.

Edward took a breath, gripping the bedsheet tight, trying to hold back an urge bursting from his chest.

'Have I fallen for her? Really?'

Edward's throat bobbed, his heartbeat racing, and a blush crept onto his pale face.

"Edward, why's your face red? You got a fever?" Eric reached out to touch his forehead, but Edward, feeling annoyed, slapped his hand away.

"Ouch!" Eric shook his hand and chuckled, "You've still got some strength, so you must be okay."

Just then, there was a frantic knock on the door.

Before they could respond, the door flew open.

Bart rushed in, about to speak when a sharp, clear voice cut through.

"Edward, you're seriously hurt and should be resting. How dare you switch hospitals without telling me? What are you trying to pull?"

Evelyn, supported by William, stormed into view.

She'd showered and changed into a light blue dress with a stylish white cashmere coat, looking like a fresh breeze in Edward's heart.

Evelyn raised her chin slightly, showing no signs of illness, her high heels clicking like her signature.

From head to toe, Evelyn was dazzling, her eyes cold as she stared at Edward.

It was like the cuddling and kissing from last night never happened.

Edward pressed his dry lips together, his brows furrowing, feeling really uncomfortable.

"I'm talking to you, are you mute?" Evelyn, though expressionless, was secretly watching Edward's haggard look, which made her even angrier. "Hiding your injuries and avoiding me, what are you trying to do? Getting my attention?"

Eric was kinda freaked out by Evelyn's boss-lady vibe. She was like a total alpha female CEO!

Meanwhile, Edward, slumped against the headboard, with those sad, puppy-dog eyes staring at Evelyn, looked like a jilted lover.

Once you got that picture in your head, the whole tense scene turned kinda funny.

Eric couldn't help but burst out laughing.

Evelyn shot him a death glare, and Eric quickly shut up and took a step back.

Bart stepped up, "Mrs. Wellington."

"Who’s Mrs. Wellington?" Evelyn snapped.

"Ms. Taylor, Mr. Wellington switched hospitals 'cause he didn't want you stressing over his injury and messing up your recovery!" Bart mumbled, looking all nervous.

Evelyn had ditched her old sweet and obedient self from her Wellington family days. Now, she was all fierce and prickly. Every time Edward faced her, his heart raced.

"Mr. Wellington is so considerate. Who said I’d worry about him?" Evelyn raised an eyebrow and sneered.

"Well, if you didn’t care, you wouldn’t have rushed over here, right?" Bart shot back, daring to push his luck.

"You!" Evelyn glared at him with those fiery eyes.

Edward leaned back, his long lashes fluttering, and a tiny smirk played on his lips.

'This Bart, usually a klutz, nailed it this time. Gonna bump up his bonus,' Edward thought.

"All of you, get out," Evelyn ordered coldly.

"Evelyn," William started, looking worried, but she cut him off, "William, you too."

Since Evelyn had spoken, no one dared to argue. They all shuffled out of the room, looking defeated.

Once the door closed, Evelyn walked up to Edward, her brows still furrowed, eyes a mix of anger and worry.

"I checked your medical records. You took a serious hit. If they’d been a bit later, you could’ve had major internal bleeding, risking your life," Evelyn said.

"But they weren’t late, and I’m still here," Edward replied calmly, his voice carrying a hint of that sexy nasal tone, his gaze soft and deep. "Evelyn, don’t forget, I’ve been to war. I’ve faced all kinds of crap and injuries. This is nothing."

Evelyn felt a jolt from his intense gaze, and memories of them fighting side by side in Liberland flashed in her mind.

No matter how cool she tried to act, just thinking about those fiery days of battling together made her heart race, her palms sweat, and her breath quicken.

"I’m grateful you saved me, but you don’t need to go this far. If you’re hurt, tell me, and I’ll find a way to help. Hiding it from me, what’s that about?" Evelyn looked at him deeply, her voice trembling a bit.

"Bart already told you why," Edward said casually, like it was no big deal.

"Your back, right? Take off your shirt and turn around," Evelyn demanded, ignoring his smooth talk, still icy. "Hurry up, why are you being so shy?"

Edward let out a bitter smile, "That’s not it."

He unbuttoned his hospital gown and took off his shirt, revealing his chiseled body, muscles defined, but the scars on his skin stood out.

Evelyn had seen Edward’s body before, but seeing it again, she was still struck by how well he kept in shape.

She couldn’t help but swallow and coldly ordered, "Lie down."
