Chapter 355 Let Her Be
Sophia choked and coughed, her heart rate becoming irregular.
"Evelyn! How dare you talk back to my mother like that? How can you be so rude! My mother is your elder!" Jessica scolded while holding Maurice.
Edward heard this, his brow furrowing, unable to hide his disdain for Jessica.
"According to your logic, being older automatically makes someone an elder. In that case, I'm your elder as well. Is this how you speak to your elders?" Evelyn, who was already taller than Jessica, looked down at her coldly, making Jessica's heart skip a beat.
Jessica's lips trembled, unable to retort, fearing Evelyn would say something even harsher.
Sophia knew Maurice wouldn't trouble Evelyn over such a small matter, so she kept giving Eric looks of discontent, urging him to save her dignity.
Eric cleared his throat and weakly started, "Evelyn, I..."
Evelyn's eyes moved, her cold gaze landing on his face, scaring Eric into changing his words instantly, "I-I'll take you home. It's so late, it's not safe."
"No need, I drove."
With that, Evelyn walked out of the villa without looking back, her high heels clicking sharply.
Eric scratched his head.
Maurice snorted, feeling that Eric had embarrassed himself in front of Evelyn.
"Let's go!"
The Clark family members left in a huff.
"My head, my head is so dizzy," Tiffany moaned weakly, leaning against Patrick.
"Always pretending to be pitiful or dizzy. If she had this kind of acting skill when she was an actress, she wouldn't have been overshadowed by Joyce for so many years," May muttered disdainfully.
Tiffany heard every word, infuriating her.
Patrick's expression was stiff. After a moment of silence, whispered to May, "May, help her back to her room."
"Sorry, I only take care of Mr. Wellington's needs, and I need to run his bath now. Please ask someone else to help her. I doubt she'd want me to help anyway. Seeing me probably makes her uncomfortable."
May turned and walked away.
Patrick remained silent.
Edward stood there, feeling a mix of unwillingness and anger, but mostly a deep sense of abandonment, as if the whole world had forsaken him.
"Edward! What are you standing there for?"
Eric strode up to Edward, giving him a hard shove, his face full of urgency. "Evelyn is about to leave. You finally got to see her; go stop her! Explain things between you and Jessica clearly!"
Edward's breath caught, his steps heavy.
On the way back, Maurice took one car, while Sophia and Jessica got into another.
In the car, Sophia was still fuming, her heart full of anger. She had been protected by Jared in her youth and pampered by Eric in middle age. She had never been so humiliated!
"Mom, Eric publicly questioned me in front of the Wellington family and Grandpa. He'll do anything to stop me from marrying Edward. He's so despicable and ruthless!"
Jessica collapsed into Sophia's arms, crying uncontrollably. "He only cares about his own happiness and doesn't care about me at all! Does he still see me as his sister? In his eyes, I'm just an enemy!"
"Jessica, don't worry. This won't end here. I'll make sure you get justice!" Sophia comforted Jessica, a cold glint in her eyes.
"What can we do? Eric controls everything at home now, and he's so close to Edward and Evelyn. What can you do?"
Sophia said hatefully, "If Eric won't let you be with Edward, then he won't be with Molly either! You have Maurice's support. He won't disregard the Clark family's reputation and will do everything to ensure your marriage to Edward. At the same time, he won't let Molly marry Eric!"
"Mom, Eric is always on guard around us! Doesn't he see through our intentions?"
Jessica's eyes were red with anger, her neck straining as she shouted, "He protects Molly so well. How can we get a chance?"
"Opportunities will come. No matter how much he cares for Molly, he can't keep her by his side all day. There will be times when he can't look after her!" Sophia was truly angry this time.
Usually, she seemed indifferent to the world and uninterested in fame and fortune. But seeing Jessica bullied and her reputation at stake, she was determined to remove all obstacles and ensure Jessica married Edward happily.
At the same time, she wanted to find a suitable match for Eric, a daughter-in-law she could be proud of.
And that woman would never be Tiffany's daughter, Molly!
Evelyn walked quickly, got into her sports car, and sped out of Riverside Villa.
As soon as her sports car turned out of the gate, her grip on the steering wheel tightened.
Under the dim streetlights and in the chilly wind, Gilbert stood elegantly leaning against a blue sports car. It was unclear how long he had been standing there, but his expression showed no impatience.
When he saw Evelyn's car, his deep eyes lit up, and he straightened up from the car, waving at her eagerly.
The sports car screeched to a halt in front of Gilbert.
"What are you doing here?" Evelyn asked in surprise as she got out of the car.
"Waiting for you," Gilbert said, a gentle smile spreading across his face like ripples on water.
"Waiting for me? For what?" She was even more confused.
"I used some connections to find out your car was heading towards Riverside Villa, so I followed. I didn't mean anything by it, just worried you might be bullied and have no one to help you."
Gilbert gave a bitter smile, "But I couldn't get in and couldn't help you even if I did. But seeing you now, it wasn't a wasted trip."
Evelyn blinked her beautiful eyes, feeling a mix of emotions.
She had always been independent and free-spirited, not liking to be watched or controlled. Especially when someone silently investigated her and followed her, it made her feel uncomfortable.
"I'm fine, just handling some personal matters."
Evelyn forced a smile, "Riverside Villa isn't a dangerous place. After all, I lived there for three years and came and went as I pleased."
A wave of bitterness surged in Gilbert's chest, and just as he was about to speak, his face suddenly darkened.
At that moment, Edward stood not far away, his handsome face cold and desolate, his brows furrowed in melancholy, blending into the cold, lonely night.
He stood silently like a cold, pale statue, staring at Evelyn without blinking, but Evelyn didn't notice.
"Gilbert, I..."
Evelyn had just started speaking when she felt a blur before her eyes. Her delicate body was suddenly pulled into a strong, forceful embrace.
Before she could react, Gilbert had wrapped her in his arms, pressing her tightly against his heaving chest. She could even feel his erratic, heated breath, his arms gently tightening around her slender waist.
"Gilbert! What are you doing?" Evelyn panicked, instinctively pushing against his shoulders.
But to Edward, this struggle looked like a flirtatious resistance!
Gilbert didn't answer her, only tightening his embrace.
He looked up again, meeting Edward's intense, angry gaze with undisguised mockery and sarcasm.
No matter how Evelyn struggled, he wouldn't let go.
Edward's entire body trembled uncontrollably, a shiver spreading through his limbs.
Edward felt heartache when he saw Evelyn and Gilbert embracing.
Edward's handsome face turned pale. He turned around, stumbling as if drunk, and walked away.
At that moment, Gilbert's arms loosened, and Evelyn seized the chance to break free, stepping back warily, her eyes red with anger.
"Gilbert, don't do this. I'm warning you for the last time. Otherwise, we can't even be friends!"
"Sorry, sorry, Evelyn."
Gilbert immediately put on an innocent and guilty expression, his hands hanging awkwardly in the air, "I know you only see me as a friend. It won't happen again, I promise. Evelyn, please forgive me this once. I was just worried about you."I try to remind myself to keep my distance, but I lost control for a moment.
Evelyn rubbed her forehead in frustration, sighing heavily, "I really hate being touched by any man other than my brothers. I hope you remember that."
Gilbert clenched his teeth, his hands dropping awkwardly, fists clenched in frustration.
He thought to himself, 'Can't you accept any other man? What about Edward? You even let William get close to you. Is it just me you can't accept, Evelyn?'
"Thank you for your concern. It's late, I need to go."
Evelyn suddenly felt a familiar, unsettling presence and slowly turned around.
The next second, her heart inexplicably felt empty.
Behind her, there was no one.
Edward dragged his heavy legs back to the villa.
"Edward!"
Eric, worried about Edward, hadn't left with the Clark family. Seeing him return alone and despondent, he rushed over.
But Edward ignored him, walking forward in a daze.
"Edward! Edward!"
Eric opened his arms and hugged him, anxiously asking, "Where's Evelyn? How did your talk go? Did she forgive you?"
"Why do I need her forgiveness? I did nothing wrong, why should she forgive me?"
Edward's bloodshot, exhausted eyes looked shattered, "Eric, I'm tired. If I can't hold on to her, if I can't catch up to her no matter how hard I try. Then let her go."
