Chapter 417 You Rely Entirely on Him for Contrast

These words were truly harsh to the extreme!

Looking at the entire Taylor family, besides Evelyn, the only one who dared to act recklessly and speak out was Ulysses.

The bodyguards couldn't help but laugh, making Gilbert feel even more humiliated!

Edward raised an eyebrow without a word, watching as the always gentle and composed Gilbert's expression gradually crumbled.

To say there was no satisfaction at all would be hypocritical.

"I just came to see Evelyn. Is it necessary to speak so harshly?" Gilbert's meticulously tailored suit hid his anger, his chest heaving.

"Then just say you're here to see Evelyn. Why bring up Charlie?"

Ulysses looked at Gilbert with undisguised contempt in his eyes, "He's not your dad, and you're not a child anymore. Isn't it embarrassing to say such things?"

Edward remained silent.

Gilbert's brows furrowed deeply, his face looking grim.

The smile he usually liked to keep on his lips was gradually freezing.

However, Gilbert was not an ordinary person. He had endured hardships on Aurora Isle in his youth, honing a resilient character.

He quickly adjusted his mindset and pleaded in a low voice, "Ulysses, I didn't mean anything by it. I was just worried. I heard Evelyn was in trouble, and I just wanted to see how she was."

"The Taylor family immediately sealed off the news, Gilbert, but I didn't expect you to find out so quickly. It seems you're always keeping an eye on the Taylor family's movements."

Ulysses squinted slightly, his words laced with sarcasm, "But Evelyn is still recuperating, and the doctor said she needs to rest and can't see you. Please leave."

Gilbert's eyes were full of unwillingness, "Ulysses."

"And one more thing. Even if you bring Charlie, you still won't be able to see her. Don't waste your effort."

With that, Ulysses glanced at Edward with a smile, "Edward, let's go."

Edward was momentarily stunned.

"What are you standing there for? Let's go!" Ulysses gave Edward a hard slap on the back.

"Alright, Ulysses." Edward responded lightly.

Gilbert felt a sharp pain in his chest, his face turning pale.

He didn't know what had happened in the past few days, nor did he know what methods Edward had used to tame the unruly Ulysses so quickly!

Suddenly, Ulysses stopped in his tracks, "Gilbert, you actually understand one thing in your heart: forced love doesn't last. Some things are just not yours, and no matter how hard you try, you can't get them. Besides, you already have a woman by your side, who should be your type, otherwise, you wouldn't keep her around, right?"

Gilbert's breath hitched, his fists clenched tightly, his heart pounding wildly!

He glared with bloodshot eyes at the backs of Ulysses and Edward disappearing down the hallway, feeling an invisible flame consuming him!

Ulysses's presence was too overwhelming. At this moment, Curtis was already sweating profusely, asking worriedly, "Mr. AlexanderWhat did he mean by that? Is the 'woman' he mentioned Miss Morgan?"

Who else could it be Sarah. But what made Gilbert even more uneasy was that Ulysses already knew there was a woman in Mugden who resembled Evelyn, and this woman was right by Gilbert's side!

"Did Ulysses see me the night Sarah went to the bar?" Gilbert asked with a dark expression.

I remember you said that bar wasn't fitting for your status, so you didn't go in to find Miss Morgan, and you never got out of the car. How could he have seen you?"

Curtis's eyes darted around, quickly saying, "Mr. Alexander, could it be because of your car? The license plate could easily trace it back to the Alexander family. Maybe he said that to deliberately provoke you, to trick you?"

"Let's go back." Gilbert turned around, gritting his teeth.

"Mr. Alexander, where are you going?"

"Rose Club."

Edward and Ulysses walked to the door of Evelyn's hospital room.

"Thanks for earlier." Edward's tone was more sincere.

"No need to thank me, and I wasn't entirely doing it to help you. I know how to make Gilbert angry, and the best way is to use you." Ulysses couldn't help but laugh at the thought of Gilbert's grim face earlier.

"It's fine, I don't mind." Edward's thin lips curved slightly.

"I really can't stand that Gilbert, always acting high and mighty. Bringing up Charlie, who does he think he is? I hate people who don't do things openly and scheme behind others' backs. He may look decent, but his actions are disgraceful. No wonder the Alexander family doesn't look at him favorably."

With that, Ulysses looked at Edward mockingly, "You know, you only look good because of his contrast, right?"

Edward remained silent. So, what did that mean? Should he thank Gilbert?"

"Mr. Taylor."

A weak voice came from behind.

Both turned around, equally surprised, "William?"

Not far away, William was struggling to walk towards them, one arm in a sling and the other supporting himself with a crutch.

Edward's eyes narrowed slightly, and he quickly walked over to support him.

William pressed his lips together, "Thank you, Mr. Wellington."

"It's nothing. I should be thanking you for protecting Evelyn." Edward's expression was calm, but his deep voice carried an unmistakable intensity of emotion.

"Mr. Wellington, you don't need to thank me. Protecting Evelyn is my duty." William's eyes sparkled with determination.

Even if he had to go through it again, he would do the same, without regret.

And after this crisis, William's attitude towards Edward had noticeably softened, after all, he had saved Evelyn's life once again.

"William! Are you trying to lose your arm? Who told you to get out of bed?"

Ulysses was so angry that he started cursing, "Do you know your arm was almost gone? Landon specially arranged for the best surgeons in the country to fly in and perform a two-day surgery to reattach your arm. If you don't want to get better, don't waste Landon's good intentions!"

"No, Mr. Taylor, I..."

"If you don't behave, I'll call your parents and have them come watch over you!" Ulysses wasn't joking; he meant what he said.

William broke out in a cold sweat, "Mr. Taylor, I can't stop worrying about Evelyn. Even when I was unconscious, I kept dreaming about what happened that night. Can I see Evelyn, please?"

"Evelyn is fine. The wound on her arm has been stitched up, and she has no other injuries. But she's feeling very down and needs time to recover and be alone." Ulysses sighed.

Edward thought of the knife wound on Evelyn's arm, and a wave of intense bitterness surged in his heart.

They had been divorced for a year, and it seemed she had been constantly getting hurt, never having a few days of peace.

He felt utterly useless.

What good was it for him to risk his life for her time and again? He was still a failure who couldn't protect her.
