Chapter 608 Our Mr. Wellington, Who Doesn't Love Him

"Our operation was tight. We didn't leak any information."

Edward's eyes darkened coldly. "It seems the Alexander family had people watching near the homes of those two key witnesses, closely monitoring their every move."

"They found out we went to see Anna, and, afraid she might turn witness, they rushed to silence her."

"Damn it!" Evelyn and Bart said in unison.

"Randy's still locked up at the station. He can't contact anyone outside. So who helped him? Could it be Gilbert?" Bart asked bitterly.

Evelyn shook her head slightly. "It wouldn't be Gilbert. In the entire Alexander family, he's the one who most wants those jerks dead as soon as possible. He would never help Randy.

It should be Elbert or Calvin."

"It's Calvin. It can only be Calvin." Edward's eyes flashed with a sharp, cold light as he spoke decisively.

Evelyn's eyes flickered as she quickly grabbed his hand. "Edward, why are you so sure it's him?"

"Elbert isn't some gangster who kills anyone who annoys him. He's a fairly successful businessman, and successful businessmen know how important it is to protect themselves. He wouldn't use such methods unless necessary."

"Even if Randy gets convicted, with the Alexander family working behind the scenes, he'd be out in twelve or thirteen years at most. Even with a death sentence, Elbert, as the group's chairman, wouldn't risk killing someone to save his son—especially such a terrible son."

Edward's calm analysis made perfect sense. "Besides, Randy isn't his only son. He still has Calvin and Gilbert. He wouldn't bring trouble on himself. But Calvin's situation is different. Evelyn, you should understand best the complicated relationships within the Alexander family."

Suddenly, the cloud over Evelyn's mind cleared, and her thoughts became clear. "Gilbert now has a high position in Elbert's eyes. Calvin must be trying everything to win back his father's favor. Getting Randy off must be the answer sheet he wants to hand to Elbert. And I know the Alexander family members have always bullied and excluded Gilbert since childhood. After growing up, Randy and Helen have helped Calvin profit plenty. If Calvin can save Randy, he's also keeping one of his supporters, since Randy still holds shares in the Alexander Group."

Edward's throat tightened as he swallowed, an inexplicable restlessness rising in his heart. "Evelyn, do you feel sorry for Gilbert?"

"Yes, I do feel sorry for him."

The man's breathing caught, and his hand at her waist slowly tightened.

"But the one I feel sorry for is the Gilbert from fifteen years ago. Not the current Gilbert—this cold-blooded devil who only cares about profit."

Evelyn recalled her childhood friendship with Gilbert, a flood of mixed emotions washing over her, but her eyes remained firm and unwavering. "I thought people who've been hurt would know to hold an umbrella for others."

"I never expected he'd become someone who cruelly tears other people's umbrellas to shreds."

"I don't know what he went through on Aurora Isle to become like this, but whatever it was, it's no excuse for his downfall."

Speaking of the past, the pressure Edward had endured, the hardships he'd faced—Gilbert couldn't compare.

But none of those hardships made him abandon his kind heart or taint his pure soul.

That was why she loved Edward.

Who wouldn't love someone with such an indomitable, upright character?

Edward smiled with both relief and self-mockery, lowering his head to kiss Evelyn's soft cheek.

"Mr. Wellington, Mrs. Wellington, then I'll immediately send people to investigate Calvin!" Bart's eyes were bloodshot.

"Bart, you don't need to worry about anything else. Just focus on healing."

Edward firmly refused, his expression serious. "Evelyn and I will figure out Calvin. As for the killer who hurt Anna, Peter will handle him for us."

Evelyn leaned against him, raising an eyebrow.

"But... but I can't rest easy!"

Bart breathed heavily, his heart aching. "When I think about Anna being strangled by that man, desperately calling for help... I... I just..."

Want to kill him with my own hands!

"If you can't rest easy, then stay by Anna's side."

Evelyn saw through his thoughts and said gently with a smile, "Become her guardian. Take good care of her and help her gain weight—that's your main job, Bart."

"Mrs. Wellington..."

Tears welled up in Bart's eyes. He was about to speak when there was a knock at the door.

"Ms. Taylor, are you in there?" It was William, who had rushed over after hearing the news.

"William!"

Evelyn and Edward quickly went to open the door.

Outside, William was sweating profusely, clearly having hurried over. His voice was anxious. "Ms. Taylor, I ran into Anna's mother on my way here, along with the parents of the other victim. They're asking to see you!"
