Chapter 249 It's Not That He Doesn't Know How to Be Tender

As soon as Evelyn showed up, the Wellington family was bound to go haywire, ending in a mess.

Evelyn didn't feel like explaining anything to Byron. She figured if she was innocent, she didn’t need to prove it.

Plus, she already knew what kind of guy Gordon was from Charlie and Donna. If he could get Debra out of the police station, he had already tied up all the loosen ends. Even if she knew he had twisted Donovan's arm to take the blame, the cops had closed the case, and it wasn’t getting reopened anytime soon.

The more polite Gordon's smile, the sneakier he was.

Byron wasn’t about to give Evelyn a hard time. He trusted her, plain and simple.

'If I can't even trust Lily, then who can I trust?' Byron thought.

Evelyn pushed Byron's wheelchair back to his room, with Edward trailing behind.

She was super annoyed and totally pissed off!

But Byron was pretty chill tonight, grinning with both of them by his side, feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

"Byron, I'm sorry. I've been swamped lately and couldn't visit. You must be mad at me, right?" Evelyn's face showed her guilt.

"What are you talking about? Just thinking of me is enough!" Byron squeezed her warm little hand and shot Edward a look, "You're young. You should get out more and meet some great guys, like Eric or Gilbert. I heard you know them well. Got a crush on any of them? If you do, bring him to meet me, and I'll check him out for you!"

Edward's brow twitched, and his chest felt tight.

Evelyn was surprised, "Byron, how do you know about Gilbert?"

"I know everything without leaving the house," Byron bragged.

"Gilbert and I have known each other since we were kids," Evelyn said.

"Childhood sweethearts?" Byron's heart skipped a beat.

"More like siblings. He was so weak as a kid, he needed me to protect him!" Evelyn raised her chin, put a hand on her hip, and smiled proudly.

It was like the twenty-four-year-old woman in front of him was still the same bright, lively, cheerful, and cute ten-year-old.

Edward stared deeply into her spirited eyes, suddenly feeling a sharp pain in his head!

Afraid Evelyn and Byron would notice, he quickly turned away, pressing hard on his throbbing temple, cold sweat breaking out on his back.

Her smile merged with the face of a vague, young girl in his distant memory.

He always felt like he had seen Evelyn a long time ago.

But he couldn’t remember.

"Is that so? Why have I never heard you mention you and Gilbert were so close?" Byron asked.

"Gilbert moved to Aurora Isle with his mom, and we lost touch. We only reconnected recently by chance," Evelyn said, not hiding anything about her relationship with Gilbert.

"I heard at the charity auction you organized, Gilbert donated a priceless necklace to help you. Shows he cares a lot about you," Byron continued.

Evelyn smiled faintly, "Gilbert probably remembers the kindness I showed him when we were young and wants to thank me by helping out."

"Seems like he's grateful and a stand-up guy." Byron looked at Edward with disdain, getting more annoyed the more he looked at him, "Much better than Edward!"

Byron wasn’t really siding with outsiders; he was just disappointed in Edward and took every chance to provoke him, hoping to push him.

"Byron, don't hold any grudges against Edward because of our divorce. I made it clear from the start that we divorced amicably, and I have no resentment towards Edward." Evelyn turned around, her eyes calm, making Edward's heart ache, "Edward isn't the cold-hearted person you think he is. He's always been grateful, considerate, and caring."

Edward felt a sharp pain in his chest, guilt choking his throat, and his broad shoulders trembled slightly.

'I’ve been grateful, considerate, and caring. But I’ve misplaced all my deep feelings. I’m such an idiot. In Evelyn's eyes, I really am not as good as Gilbert,' Edward thought.

Evelyn gave Byron a few more health tips before leaving the room.

As soon as she stepped out, Edward was right behind her.

"I'll take you home," Edward said simply.

Evelyn didn’t want to make a scene in front of Byron, but now she finally exploded. She spun around, pointing right at his face.

"Stop!" she shouted.

Edward frowned, totally confused.

Evelyn pressed her red lips together. "I don’t need you to take me home. I’m in my twenties; it’s not like I don’t know the way!"

"It's too late. I'll take you," Edward insisted, stepping forward.

Remembering being held by him tonight, Evelyn bit her lip and patted her shoulder as if brushing off invisible dirt, saying angrily, "Edward, I didn’t lose my temper earlier not because I want anything with you, but simply because Byron was there. Don’t push your luck. I’m already fuming over the whole thing about Gordon and Debra. If you come any closer, believe me, I’ll hit you."

Evelyn thought her words were very imposing and intimidating.

But Edward just curled his lips, almost wanting to laugh.

"If Gordon gives you any more trouble, tell me, and I'll take care of him," he said softly.

"No need! The Flynn family and the Taylor family matters are none of your business. Just take care of yourself!" Evelyn thought of how Edward had defended her in front of the Wellington family tonight, and a complicated emotion stirred in her heart.

But then she thought, 'Edward is probably more concerned about his own interests. After all, it seems Patrick wants Gordon to join the Wellington Group. If Gordon really becomes the Wellington family's legal advisor, it means Patrick has gained a powerful ally, which will be bad news for him.'

With this thought, Evelyn could only let out a cold laugh.

Just as Edward took another step forward, a stern voice came from behind.

"Edward!"

Edward's brows furrowed as he turned to see Patrick walking quickly towards him.

"Come to the study. I have something to say," Patrick said.

"I'll see you later. Right now, I need to take Evelyn home," Edward responded coldly, not backing down.

"Take her? Does she need you? She’s already left!" Patrick mocked.

Edward was suddenly stunned and turned around, finding Evelyn had already disappeared without a trace.

Evelyn walked out of the Riverside Villa with a blank expression.

"Ms. Taylor."

She stopped, her eyes growing colder as she saw Gordon approaching her.

"Whether you accept it or not, I won this time. Losing to me is nothing to be ashamed of," he said.

"Indeed, no matter how I think about it, I feel like I win this time." Evelyn wasn’t angry; instead, she mocked him, "Thanks to the Debra incident, I got to see your true colors completely. I wonder, if Uncle Brian knew that you are doing dirty work for a tycoon and going against his former benefactors, would he feel ashamed of you?"

Gordon's previously fake smile froze completely, his face darkening, "Ms. Taylor, I gave you some respect because you are Mr. Taylor's daughter. But you keep provoking me; that's too much! Do you think being a tycoon means you can do whatever you want?"

"Your words remind me, I am a tycoon's daughter, and doing whatever I want is my birthright. With such a noble status, why not use it?" Evelyn's beautiful eyes narrowed dangerously, her red lips curving like a bloodless blade, "So next time, before you go against me, you'd better remember who my father is and who stands behind me. My temper is much worse than my father's."

With those harsh words, Evelyn walked away in her stylish high heels.

Gordon watched Evelyn's stunning figure disappear, gritting his teeth in anger.

"Evelyn, don't mistake me for my useless brother. William may be willing to be your family's butler, but I'm not that pathetic, letting you manipulate me! The days of our rivalry are far from over!" Gordon murmured.
