Chapter 492 "You two got back together?"
Evelyn's lowered lashes cast two shadows.
In the past, she might have thought Gilbert genuinely cared about Charlie, but now, she only felt he harbored ill intentions.
He dared to go after Nancy and Wade with deadly force; what did Charlie mean to him?
Gilbert had always been ruthless.
He only restrained himself from harming her because of his overwhelming desire for her, and until he satisfied that desire, he wouldn't dare harm her.
"My dad's fine, he's lively and energetic at home right now."
Evelyn sneered, "He can't control his mouth, has a bad stomach, and often eats things that upset it. He probably ate something he shouldn't have and got a stomachache. It's nothing serious, you can go back."
"Really? But I saw he looked very unwell at the time, and he had a severe headache. It seemed quite serious. Could it be something like a stroke?"
"Gilbert, are you cursing my father?" Evelyn interrupted coldly, her beautiful eyes flashing sharply, "Or are you probing into the Taylor family's affairs?"
"Evelyn, I'm not, you've misunderstood!"
Seeing her anger, Gilbert's eyes reddened with urgency. He stepped forward and grabbed her slender arm, "I'm just worried about Uncle Charlie, I just wanted to see you!"
Evelyn shook him off forcefully, stepping back two paces to distance herself from him.
"But I don't want to see you."
"Evelyn, what's wrong with you?"
Gilbert's pale lips trembled slightly, his anxious emotions tearing at his tightly wound insides. He wanted to approach her again, but was deterred by her wary and distant gaze, "What happened? Can you tell me? Please tell me, don't treat me like this."'So innocent. Gilbert, your eyes are so clear and innocent, just like the real thing.'
"You want to know? Fine, then I'll ask you."
Evelyn took a deep breath, gritting her teeth, each word dripping with coldness, "You know Sebastian, right? He's your man, isn't he?"
"Who's Sebastian?" Gilbert looked at her angry face in confusion.
But the shoulders under his crisp suit were tense like a drawn bowstring.
He thought he had hidden it well. Even if Evelyn was meticulous, connecting his past activities on Aurora Isle and his close dealings with arms dealers in Torontow, she couldn't have found anything deep.
Without catching Sebastian himself, she had no evidence to definitively accuse him.
But he never expected her to question him so directly. Did she have no trust in him at all?
"You have a big business on Aurora Isle, with a wide range of interests, and you have close ties with many high-ranking officials in Torontow, even people in the military. Sebastian is a lieutenant colonel in the Torontow Army, who worked on Aurora Isle in his early years. Do you really not know him?" Evelyn crossed her arms and scrutinized him, full of suspicion.
Even her sneer was so beautiful it captivated his heart and soul.
"Evelyn, although I have some connections on Aurora Isle, I'm far from being as powerful as you think."
Gilbert was burning with anxiety, his eyes bloodshot with worry, "But if Sebastian has caused you trouble or hurt you, I'll do whatever it takes to get rid of him for you!"
Evelyn listened to his heartfelt words and sneered, "Yes, of course, you want to get rid of Sebastian. More than anyone, you want him dead, right?"
"As long as he's alive, you can't be at peace. He's like a ticking time bomb that could expose all your shady dealings at any moment."
"Evelyn, how can you think of me like this?"
Gilbert's eyes filled with tears, his lips turning pale from biting.
He portrayed the image of a misunderstood, wronged lover so vividly, fully immersing himself in the role, forgetting that he was the one who had brought all this deadly trouble to Evelyn.
Evelyn just stared at him, her eyes calm but filled with complex emotions.
"What happened? Evelyn, can you tell me? What did I do to make you misunderstand? Even if I have to die, you should let me die knowing why!" Gilbert kept questioning, his forehead covered in cold sweat.
The always dignified and composed Gilbert had never been so disheveled.
Evelyn knew she wouldn't get any answers. She was only revealing these things to warn Gilbert, to pressure him into making a mistake. It was also a cruel way to tell him not to have any more illusions about her.
They had no future. Even their friendship couldn't continue."Fine, you don't admit to Sebastian, but what about Nancy and Wade?"
Evelyn's shoulders trembled with immense anger. "Are you also going to deny how you persecuted them for your own benefit on Aurora Isle?"
"Evelyn, my company's people did do some bad things to Wade, but when I found out Wade's wife was your sister Nancy, I immediately ordered them to stop all plans!"
"But you know, the company isn't just mine; several major shareholders have significant influence. When I stopped the plan, they opposed it in many ways, creating numerous obstacles. I did my best to smooth things over, but I couldn't stop their private actions!"
Gilbert's hoarse voice kept explaining to her, "Evelyn, please believe me! I love you so much, I've loved you for fifteen years! How could I bear to make you sad or hurt your family?"
Evelyn just stared at him, the suffocating cold silence spreading between them.
After a while, she softly said, "You should go back. If you don't, I will."
As she turned to leave, Gilbert suddenly hugged her from behind, pleading, "Evelyn, don't leave me."
"Let go! Don't touch me!"
Evelyn felt a wave of disgust, using all her strength to break free, like a hedgehog with all its spines raised!
Gilbert staggered back a step, his delicate face stiff, his eyes sorrowful.
"Gilbert, I have someone I love, I have a boyfriend. Even if I didn't, you shouldn't be so forward with me!" Evelyn's resistance and disgust were cruel and obvious.
"Your boyfriend, is it Edward?"
Gilbert's expression went blank, his soul seemingly shattered, "You two got back together?"
"Why not? Edward risked his life to help me get revenge and arrest the villains. He almost didn't make it back from Torontow alive, and we nearly got separated forever because of that Sebastian."
Evelyn choked up, remembering how Edward fought for her, covered in wounds, "Edward, who loves me with his whole life, why wouldn't I want him, why wouldn't I love him?"
"You should go. I'll continue investigating Sebastian, and I hope everything is as you say."
"If you're the mastermind, Gilbert, you know what I'll do. I won't let any unjust person go, no matter who they are."
