Chapter 542 A Pair of Eyes, Secretly Watching
Maurice suddenly remembered that Eric had been in charge of the Clark Group's security team for many years.
At first, he handed over the security responsibilities to Eric, thinking it wasn't a core department of the group and just wanted to give him something to do.
But now, his delegation of power had become a tool to restrain him!
"I've already coordinated with Mr. Taylor to lock this place down tight."
Eric narrowed his eyes, which were filled with coldness. "Grandpa, I'm not trying to make things hard for you. As long as Jessica owns up to what she did and confesses, you can walk out of here with your head held high."
"Eric! How dare you!" Maurice's neck veins bulged in anger.
"Who's being disrespectful?"
Edward's bloodshot eyes glared fiercely at Maurice.
"Who's the one who can't tell right from wrong, aiding and abetting evil? Who's the one who repeatedly hurt my woman, relying on someone backing them up? It's you and that damned Jessica!"
Everyone was so intimidated by Edward's powerful presence that they didn't dare to breathe.
Evelyn's eyes were filled with tears as she gazed at him.
She still loved him deeply, still liked hearing him say, "Evelyn is my woman."
Edward's throat was filled with the taste of blood from the anger surging up from his chest. His face was harsh and cold, his muscles tensed under his suit, extending to his iron-like fists.
Anger and pain filled his body with a destructive force.
Everything seemed fragile and insignificant in front of him!
"Anyone who protects Jessica will be my enemy. I will spend my life tormenting them, making every day a living hell."
Maurice had been tough since his teenage years, fighting on the streets, battling other gangs for territory. He had seen all kinds of terrifying scenes.
But now, in front of Edward, he felt panicked and intimidated, his tough exterior crumbling!
"Grandpa... take me away... Grandpa!" Jessica shook Maurice's stiff body frantically, too scared to even cry!
Could it be that Maurice was really afraid of Edward?
Just a few threats, and he backed down? He was getting more useless with age!
"Jessica."
Evelyn forced herself to endure the pain in her heart, steadied her mind, and stepped away from Landon's embrace, moving closer to Jessica.
Jessica was now surrounded by enemies. No matter how much she hated Evelyn, no matter how much she wanted to kill her, there was nothing she could do now.
"I only have one question for you." Evelyn closed her eyes, then opened them again, filled with a chilling intensity. "Where did you get the medical report that says I can't have children?"
Everyone's sharp gaze focused on Jessica's swollen, red face.
"Yeah, Ms. Taylor's question is something I'm curious about, too."
Adrian walked over to Landon, glaring coldly at Jessica. "I'm a doctor too, and I know how private these medical reports are. Any doctor with a shred of professional ethics wouldn't give such confidential information to anyone other than their patient. So I think, Miss Clark, you must have bribed Ms. Taylor's attending physician, right?"
Landon's handsome brows furrowed slightly, nodding in agreement.
Adrian glanced at the man, feeling pleased to have his approval.
"Who are you?"
"Do you also want to protect Evelyn? Do you also want to be with Evelyn?"
Adrian rolled his eyes in frustration. He wasn't interested in Evelyn; his sexual orientation was quite progressive.
"It's not the doctor! It has nothing to do with the doctor!" Jessica couldn't hold it in anymore, blurting out in panic!
"What do you mean? The diagnosis report you have didn't come from the doctor? Then where did you get it?" Eric asked coldly.
"I... I..." Jessica clenched her fists tightly, her eyes filled with fear and unease.
Eric angrily tore off his tie and threw it to the ground, his patience at its limit. "Not talking, huh? Guards! Arrest her! Send her to the police! If we can't get answers, there are people who can interrogate her!"
The bodyguards responded and moved to grab Jessica. She was terrified and threw herself into Maurice's arms, crying and accusing, "Grandpa! How can Eric treat me like this? He's trying to destroy his own family!"
"Eric! That's enough! She's your family! Do you really have to ruin her reputation in front of everyone?"
Maurice, seeing that force wouldn't work, tried to persuade softly, "Jessica may have made mistakes, but she's young. It's possible that someone with malicious intent manipulated her into making a bad decision! I don't believe Jessica would do such a thing! How could she think of asking the doctor for a diagnosis report? Someone must have set her up and used her! That person must be someone close to Ms. Taylor. Without certain knowledge, how could they obtain such information?"
Maurice, who had been acting crazy all night, suddenly spoke with a bit of clarity.
Evelyn and Edward's eyes darkened.
Indeed, Jessica was a bad woman, but she wasn't smart enough. Even if she were smart, how could she think of investigating Evelyn's health and obtaining such private information!
The only people who knew this secret, besides the attending physician and Desmond, were Donna, Joyce, and Susan from the Taylor family.
They would never leak the information, and the doctor was Byron's close friend for decades, tightly monitored by Desmond. The original report had long been deleted from the system, with no records left.
Who had the means to restore the file and knew all about her miscarriage?
Suddenly, Evelyn felt a chilling sensation in her chest.
It seemed like an invisible eye had been watching her for a long, long time.
Eric's cold laugh was chilling. "Even if she's not the mastermind, she's an accomplice. And whether there's a mastermind is still unknown. Now that we've caught her, she has to take responsibility. Take her away!"
"It's not me! I didn't plan all this! I was used too!"
Jessica, seeing herself becoming the target of everyone's anger, realized she was about to become a criminal instead of taking down Evelyn.
She couldn't hide it anymore and ran to Eric in panic. "Eric... I know I was wrong... I'll never do it again! But I'm a victim too; someone used me as a pawn! He wants to destroy me, and maybe he wants to destroy the Clark Group too!"
Jessica cried and reached out her trembling hand to grab Eric's hand.
Eric's brow twitched, and he quickly stepped back, his disgust evident as if a bucket of dirty water was about to be poured on him.
Jessica missed, falling to her knees with a thud.
The marble floor almost shattered her knees, making her cry even harder from the pain.
"What's going on? Speak quickly!" Eric shouted, his eyes red with anger.
"I... I received an anonymous call a few days ago... from a strange man."
Edward's brows furrowed deeply. "A strange man? You didn't recognize his voice?"
"He probably didn't want me to recognize him... so he used a voice changer..."
Jessica, afraid of taking the blame alone, decided to spill everything. "I know nothing about him, but he knows everything about me, about all of you! He knew I wanted to marry Mr. Wellington, so he exploited my weakness and gave me... Ms. Taylor's secret information. He told me to reveal it at the right time."
"The right time, you sure know how to pick the moment." Landon and the others gritted their teeth in anger!
Evelyn frowned in deep thought, her moist eyes dark and somber.
This time, Jessica used her trauma to attack her, aiming to destroy their relationship, and the effect was undoubtedly significant.
Previously, her relationship with Edward had been in crisis because of the hotel incident.
At this moment, she connected the two events, realizing the methods were equally insidious, treacherous, and vicious, hitting the mark directly!
Jessica's foolish mind couldn't possibly come up with such a cunning plan; it must have been this man advising her.
Evelyn coldly asked, "Is the man who advised you the same one who set up the hotel incident to create the illusion of you and Mr. Wellington being together?"
So, Edward's supposed "abandonment" of Jessica was also her trap?
Maurice was shocked, his lips trembling!
Was it really Jessica's plan? Did she sacrifice her reputation to get Edward? When did his carefully nurtured granddaughter become so sinister and terrifying?
Edward's throat moved painfully. Evelyn was clearly the most wronged and hurt one. Yet now, she was still trying to find a way to clear his name.
Edward bitterly smiled, shaking his head in pain.
He had saved her life, time and time again, but what did it matter?
Compared to the harm he had caused her, those sacrifices he thought were grand were insignificant.
"No... no!" Jessica stubbornly denied, sweating profusely. "The hotel incident had nothing to do with that man!"
Evelyn smirked coldly, not pressing further.
Because Jessica's flawed expression had already given her the answer.
"Evelyn, do you have any more questions for her?" Eric's gentle gaze turned to Evelyn.
Evelyn shook her head lightly.
"Alright, take her away." Eric waved his hand.
Jessica's eyes widened. "Take me... where?"
"The police station." Jessica felt like she was struck by lightning, retreating in anger, her voice sharp, "Eric... you tricked me! You said you'd let me go if I confessed!"
"Let you go? Did I say that?"
Eric turned away, no longer looking at her, as if it was a ceremony of severance. "Jessica, I said I would punish you on behalf of God. No one can stop me, including Grandpa."
Two bodyguards stepped forward, each grabbing one of Jessica's arms and dragging her out. Her legs went limp, dragging on the ground, her hair disheveled, one high heel missing.
"Grandpa! Save me! Grandpa!"
But Maurice didn't move until Jessica was dragged out of the banquet hall.
What could he do?
Jessica had almost destroyed his decades of reputation! If he defended her in front of everyone, he would lose the Clark family's dignity, too!
After this incident, the four families couldn't stay, and the Wilson father and son's banquet couldn't continue, ending prematurely.
Charlie didn't give Edward any chance to explain, forcefully putting Evelyn into the car, locking the door, and personally driving her straight to Hameen.
Landon gave his car to William and Jennifer, the couple also heading to Hameen, able to comfort each other on the way.
Especially since Jennifer's condition wasn't good, only William could soothe her inner shadows and trauma.
Landon stood alone in the parking lot, watching the Taylor family leave until they disappeared.
Only then did he reach into his suit, pulling out the crumpled medical report.
Landon read it again carefully, each word causing his heart to spasm in pain, as if it were pierced with icy knives.
Finally, he couldn't hold back, tears staining the cruel words on the paper.
At that moment, heavy footsteps echoed in the silent parking lot.
Landon took a deep breath, quickly wiping away his tears, and slowly turned around.
A few steps away, Edward stood there, sadness flooding his eyes, silently extinguishing the original brightness.
