Chapter 90 I Should Never Have Married You!
"Why?" Edward frowned, eyes narrowing.
No one knew how long it took him to muster the courage to apologize. It was a whole week of sleepless nights!
He planned to wait until Byron's birthday party to tell her in person, but seeing Eric at her place tonight, he couldn't wait. He just wanted to get to her as fast as possible.
Edward didn't know what was wrong with him. He'd never felt like this before.
His emotions always had a switch. But now, he realized that switch was in Lily's hands.
"If anyone should apologize, it should be Nicole herself. What does it mean for you to apologize for her?"
Evelyn's eyes were cold. "If she committed murder, would you take the fall for her too?"
"Lily, I'm here to sincerely apologize!" Edward's voice rose, his eyes slightly red.
"I think you're just here to piss me off."
Evelyn laughed, her eyes flickering coldly. "Edward, if you don't understand what 'sorry' means, then don't say it at all!"
"Lily, are you picking a fight with me?" Edward's voice grew colder.
"You're the one picking a fight. I didn't ask you to come here. You came on your own to make a fool of yourself."
Evelyn struggled to free her wrist, feeling her bones ache. "Let go. I want to go back!"
"So what if I'm apologizing for her? I'm still bowing my head to you. What will it take to satisfy you?!" Edward couldn't control his anger, grabbing her shoulders and shaking her.
"Edward, what I want has never been for you to bow your head to me."
'What I want is for you to love me. But I know I will never get your love in this lifetime. I've accepted it, finally let it go, so why do you keep coming back to torment me?' Evelyn thought with a bitter smile, her eyes turning red.
Her red eyes were vivid, beautiful, and scorching. Edward's heart trembled, feeling as if his soul had been burned.
"I want you to disappear from my world, to vanish without coming back."
Evelyn shoved Edward hard, but he grabbed her wrist again. "How could I vanish? You'll never erase the fact that we were married for three years!"
"To you, we are divorced. To me, I'm widowed." Evelyn's eyes were filled with extreme contempt, as if he were an insignificant speck of dust.
Edward's vision blurred, as if struck by a heavy blow, and suddenly, he had a headache!
He gasped, his hands trembling in pain. "Lily! If I don't divorce you, you'll never have a new beginning!"
Tears welled up in Evelyn's normally resolute eyes. Finally, she couldn't bear it and slapped Edward.
This was the second time she had slapped Edward, but her feelings were completely different from the first time.
At this moment, her heart hurt as if Edward's words had pierced through it.
"Edward, if I had known you were so shameless, I would never have married you!"
Evelyn quickly got out of the car, slamming the door hard, not bothering to grab an umbrella, and ran back to the villa in the rain.
Edward's eyes were blank. His head still turned to the side, frozen.
No one knew how long it took, but eventually, his towering frame folded in on itself, his arms enveloping his head in anguish, presenting a picture of absolute misery and desolation.
Back home, Evelyn avoided William, running to her room.
As soon as she got upstairs, she couldn't hold back her tears any longer. She leaned against the wall with her left hand, clutching her chest with her right, gasping and suppressing her sobs, barely keeping the tears from falling.
"Lily?" Eric's worried voice came from behind. Evelyn bit her lip, forcing the tears back.
"I'm too tired to see you out. Thanks for the gift."
"Lily, what's wrong?" Eric asked, his heart trembling.
"I'm fine. Good night."
"Lily!" Eric strode up to her, grabbing her thin shoulders and turning her to face him.
Eric's strength was too much, and Evelyn felt dizzy from his shaking. Her moist, beautiful eyes were filled with a mix of resentment and confusion, even more heart-wrenching.
"Have you been crying?" Eric's eyes were fixed on her.
"No," she replied coldly, but her red eyes betrayed her.
"Lily, did Edward upset you? He's not worth it!"
"Yeah, he's not worth it," Evelyn murmured, dazed.
Eric took a sharp breath. Her eyes were like shattered ice, cutting into his heart.
"Lily, why don't you try dating me?" Eric said softly.
Evelyn's brows furrowed slightly.
"Why not give me a chance? I may not be perfect, but I'll be better for you!"
'Aren't I better than Edward?' he thought.
"Eric, I'm really tired. Please, don't make this harder for me." Evelyn looked at him, sadness in her eyes.
"Lily." Eric's breath hitched, his heart aching for her.
"It's late. I need to sleep. Please go." Evelyn pushed him away, slowly walking to her bedroom.
"Are you and Landon really a couple? What's your deal with him? Are you dating him or just using him to get back at Edward?" Eric asked.
Evelyn was startled, clenching her fists. "None of your business."
"This villa doesn't show any signs of you and Landon living together. If he's your boyfriend, why aren't his shoes at the door?" Eric pressed.
"I'll say it again, it's none of your business."
"Lily! Don't hurt yourself, don't do anything foolish!" Eric's voice was anxious.
Evelyn pressed her lips together, walking away without looking back.
Edward drove from Evelyn's house back to Riverside Villa. A trip that should've taken less than an hour took him two.
The severe headache made it almost impossible to see the road, and the heavy rain didn't help. Twice, he nearly crashed.
Edward burst into his study, knocking over cups and papers in his frantic search for medicine. When he found the bottle, he swallowed the pills without water.
Even after taking double the dosage, the headache didn't subside.
'Edward, if I had known you were so shameless, I would never have married you!'
Lily's hateful words echoed in his mind. His strong body curled up like a cocoon, his head splitting with pain, cold sweat pouring down.
May heard the commotion and rushed in, her eyes welling uo with tears. "Mr. Wellington! What's wrong?! Is it your headache again?!"
Edward's mind was foggy, his speech slurring. "Lily, Lily."
"Mr. Wellington! Hold on, I'll call the doctor!"
May, pale with fear, rushed out just as a call came in.
It was an unfamiliar number, vibrating incessantly.
"Who is this?!"
"May, it's me." A gentle voice came through.
"Mrs. Wellington? Is that you?!" May covered her mouth in disbelief.
"Yes, it's me, Lily."
"Mrs. Wellington, thank goodness!"
May wiped her tears, sobbing. "Please, save Mr. Wellington! His headache is so bad he's talking nonsense! When you were with him, his headaches were under control. Since you left, they've gotten worse! What are we going to do?!"
"May, don't worry, listen to me."
Evelyn took a deep breath, her tone calm. "Go to my room. In the drawer by my bed, there's a silver box with silver needles I used to treat Edward's headaches. Under the box, there's a notebook with treatment methods and massage points. You learned a bit about this before, right?"
"Yes! I can do the massage, I'll go right now!" May nodded.
"And May, Edward got hurt tonight. His back was hit by a tree branch. He's keeping quiet about it, but I know it's serious. There's ointment for bruises in my drawer. Apply it to his back. If it doesn't get better in a few days, take him to a doctor. Don't delay."
"OK, I've got it, Mrs. Wellington." May wiped her tears, feeling deeply distressed.
'Such a good girl, how did Mr. Wellington manage to lose her?'
"One last thing." Evelyn paused, sighing softly. "Please, don't tell Edward I called."
