Chapter 158 How Can I Make It Up to You
Nicole got dragged out, catching the eyes of the medical staff and feeling humiliated.
But she had nothing left to lose, so she didn't care anymore.
Bart and the bodyguard threw her to the ground in sync.
"Got any tissues?" Bart asked.
"Sorry, Bart, I don't," the bodyguard replied.
"Never mind, we'll ask the nurse for some alcohol wipes later. We need to clean our hands!" Bart spat at Nicole before heading back inside with the bodyguard.
The night sky erupted with thunder, and soon, a heavy downpour began, hitting the ground so hard that steam rose.
Nicole, devastated, sat in the rain, too weak to stand. Her party hairstyle was ruined, and her makeup was a mess.
"Edward, I saved your life! How can you be so heartless?!" Nicole cried, slapping puddles and breaking her diamond-studded nails, screaming in pain.
A black Rolls-Royce pulled up, splashing mud all over her, even getting into her mouth.
"Do you know how to drive?! Are you blind?!" Nicole yelled at the car.
The driver got out with an umbrella and opened the rear door. Simon stepped out first, taking the umbrella and getting wet himself to shield the car door.
Landon followed, his face cold. The two brothers shared the umbrella, looking imposing despite the storm.
Seeing them, Nicole shivered, her curses stuck in her throat.
"Ms. Adams, Bray isn't staying at this hospital, right? Are you crying at the wrong place?" Simon smirked at the drenched Nicole.
"Let's go, Evelyn is waiting," Landon said, patting Simon's shoulder.
They walked inside without another glance at Nicole.
"Evelyn, why do you have everyone pampering you while I end up with nothing, even Edward abandoning me for you?!"
Lightning and thunder lit up Nicole's twisted, fierce face.
"Evelyn! One day, I swear I'll make you pay!"
Evelyn had just put Molly to sleep and sighed softly, stroking her cheek.
Molly was really scared tonight, and she was exhausted too.
She tucked Molly in and walked to the door, worried.
Opening it, she saw Edward's beautiful yet gloomy eyes.
He stood there in a suit, but he looked desolate.
Evelyn's brows furrowed slightly, her gaze lowering.
His collar had a lapel pin she had given him on their first Valentine's Day in the Wellington family, set with two high-quality rubies.
She had put a lot of thought in it, just like how Edward had painstakingly prepared the Heart of Flame for Nicole.
Evelyn's eyes darkened, a mocking smile tugging at her lips.
The item Edward once set aside was now worn by him. How ridiculous and ironic!
"I've made Nicole leave. She won't bother you anymore," Edward said, his voice hoarse, looking deeply into her cold eyes.
"Is that so? Congrats. Tonight wasn't all bad for you; at least you got rid of a nuisance," Evelyn's smile was sharp, like a thorny rose. "I know you're good at handling women. Did Ms. Adams get five million dollars and a villa this time?"
Lightning outside seemed to strike Edward, his shoulders trembling, heart aching.
He remembered throwing the divorce papers in Evelyn's face, stubbornly wanting out of the marriage, never considering how deeply it would hurt her. That tear-stained divorce agreement was still in his drawer. He dreaded thinking about how she signed it alone after he left her to find Nicole.
Edward's breath caught, his heart feeling like it was about to shatter.
Back then, maybe everyone was wrong, but Evelyn loving him wasn't a mistake. Even if he didn't love her, he shouldn't have shattered her heart into pieces.
"I heard from Tyler that you used massage to buy Byron some time for resuscitation. Thank you," Edward's voice was painfully hoarse.
"No need to thank me, Byron is my grandfather too. Excuse me." Evelyn, not wanting to waste words, coldly lowered her eyes and tried to walk past him, but his tall figure blocked her way. "Stay out of my way! Edward, what's wrong with you?" she bit her lip, anger flashing in her eyes.
"Evelyn, I want to make it up to you," Edward's gaze was intense. "Tell me, how can I do that?"
"Are you nuts? You should get your brain checked," Evelyn frowned, laughing bitterly, feeling insulted.
"In the past, it was my fault, the hurt I caused you..." Edward began.
"Stop." Evelyn impatiently gestured with her hands. "Edward, from now on, don't apologize to me anymore. I don't want to hear it. And, actually, I've figured it out. You love Nicole deeply; you wouldn't marry anyone but her. What fault do you have? You're just protecting your true love. Edward, you were never wrong. I loved the wrong person, that's my fault. But, it was only that one time in this life. I swear, I will never fall in the same place twice."
Edward's eyes reddened, his fingers trembling as they clenched. Her words were like sharp knives, pinning him to a pillar of shame.
They had indeed loved the wrong people. The difference was Evelyn had come to a profound realization. But he was sinking deeper and deeper.
"Evelyn!"
Hearing the call, Evelyn quickly turned, seeing Landon and Simon walking towards her from the other end of the hallway.
"Landon, Simon!" She happily brushed past the stiff Edward, eagerly throwing herself into Landon and Simon's arms.
"I'm so hungry, Landon. Can you make me a midnight snack when we get back?" Evelyn pouted, clinging to Landon's arm.
"Landon, I'm hungry too!" Simon mimicked her, holding onto Landon's other arm, making it feel like they were kids again.
"Alright, I'll feed you both when we get back, you little gluttons." Landon looked at Evelyn and Simon, smiling indulgently.
Edward watched them disappear down the hallway, feeling as if the whole world had gone silent, his heart overwhelmed with sorrow.
Evelyn still had people who loved her after leaving him; but why did he feel like his entire soul had been hollowed out after leaving Evelyn?
