Chapter 379 Don't Interfere in My Affairs
Betty's sudden cardiac arrest was no small matter. Simon took her to the hospital and informed Evelyn to come visit.
He knew Evelyn's temper; if he kept it from her any longer, their sibling relationship might be over.
Early the next morning, Evelyn hurried back to the hospital in Mugden where Betty was staying, accompanied by William.
"Simon! What happened? How did Betty have a cardiac arrest?" Evelyn asked, tears welling up in her eyes.
"The doctor said Betty's constitution is weak, and she has a heart condition, but it's not too serious."
A heart condition?
Evelyn's body trembled, and William quickly stepped forward to support her.
She felt terrible inside.
Betty was not only her apprentice but also her best friend. Yet, she knew nothing about Betty's health condition.
What a failure as a mentor!
Simon thought of Betty's normalcy with her family last night, his fists silently clenched, and he said hoarsely, "She was overly emotional, which led to the cardiac arrest. Luckily, I was there; otherwise, the consequences would have been unimaginable."
After sending Betty to the hospital last night, he called Evelyn and briefly explained how they had met. But he didn't tell Evelyn about the conflict between Betty and her family.
"Overly emotional? Why was she so emotional?" Evelyn always liked to get to the bottom of things.
In her impression, Betty was always carefree, as if nothing bothered her.
How could she get so emotional?
"Evelyn, let's wait until Betty wakes up and let her tell you herself," Simon said, recalling the lingering kiss from last night, his cheeks heating up and his mind slightly dazed.
"Mr. Taylor, were you with Miss Anderson all night? Did you take her to your place?" William couldn't help but ask curiously.
Evelyn was also curious.
After all, Simon, who had been single for thirty years, had never taken a woman home before!
Wasn't he always indifferent to women?
"Yes," Simon admitted honestly. "The situation was urgent last night. I was afraid she might get into trouble again, so I took her home."
"And then? Simon?" Evelyn shook Simon's arm frantically and asked urgently, "What else did you do?"
"Why do you have so many questions!" Simon gently flicked her forehead affectionately, but his heart was inexplicably racing.
He wondered if Betty still remembered that kiss that had left him so flustered last night.
Should he ask her when she wakes up?
At that moment, the door to the ward opened, and a nurse came out.
"The patient is awake."
Without a word, Evelyn anxiously pushed the door open and went in.
William stayed outside, looking at Simon's increasingly red face, and asked in surprise, "Mr. Taylor, do you have a fever?"
"Huh?" Simon snapped out of his daze.
"Your face is really red. Are you okay?"
Simon's heart skipped a beat, and he hurriedly smiled, "I'm fine, I'm fine."
William coughed lightly, a silent smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
In the ward, Betty weakly leaned against the headboard, the morning sunlight casting a painful beauty on her pale face.
"Betty," Evelyn called softly, her eyes red.
For a moment, she couldn't believe that the thin, almost unrecognizable woman in front of her was the carefree, sunny Betty.
"Evelyn?" Betty was stunned, pulling her hand with the IV needle under the blanket.
"What happened?"
Evelyn sat by the bed, gently holding her hand, and asked with concern, "How did this happen? Who bullied you?"
Betty bit her lip.
"Tell me, and I'll stand up for you!"
"It's just low blood sugar, nothing serious."
"You're still not telling the truth? Don't you know you have a heart condition? How long were you planning to keep it from me?" Evelyn was so angry that her face turned red, squeezing Betty's hand painfully. "Simon said you received a call last night, and after that, you fainted from being overly emotional.
"Who called you? What did they say? What happened at the nightclub last night?"
Evelyn was sharp, hitting every sore spot.
Betty's long lashes trembled, her fingers slightly retracting in Evelyn's palm. "Evelyn, I didn't mean to hide it from you. But I hope you can give me some personal space, let me have some secrets of my own."
"No! No! No!" Evelyn was filled with indignation, her eyes red. "What secrets? You were clearly messed with and don't want me to know, don't want me to stand up for you!
"One of my life principles is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Whoever hurts someone close to me, I'll make them pay a hundredfold! You've been messed wiht like this, how can I just stand by?"
"You can't help!"
Betty's chest heaved violently. It was the first time she had spoken to her in such a harsh tone. "I'm begging you, please don't interfere in my affairs, okay? I'm begging you!"
Evelyn was stunned, the light in her eyes slowly dimming.
When she came out of the ward, she was visibly upset.
But she was naturally stubborn. The more Betty hid, the more she wanted to get to the bottom of it and stand up for her!
Evelyn left William to look after things and went with Simon to a café across from the hospital.
"Evelyn, I think Betty's family has serious issues. I don't know if she's ever mentioned it to you," Simon said, lowering his long lashes. He knew Evelyn didn't like her coffee too bitter, so he gently placed a sugar cube in her cup.
"No, she only mentioned that she has a mother back home who's not in good health. She never told me anything else." Evelyn took a deep breath. "She's my most trusted friend. I never thought of investigating her."
"It's not investigating, it's understanding. Only by fully understanding can you know her pain and truly help her." With that, Simon's eyes flickered. He pulled up some information on his phone and handed it to Evelyn. "I'm sorry, Evelyn. I investigated Betty without your permission. Please don't be mad at me."
How could Evelyn be mad? She was secretly pleased.
Simon had always only cared about his cases and her matters. For him to be so dedicated to Betty this time was really something.
Could it mean that Simon was finally going to have a girlfriend?
