Chapter 68 Debra's Public Apology
Eric was startled by Edward's intensely fierce gaze.
Edward wasn't that angry either when Nicole left him to go abroad three years ago.
In fact, Eric was half-joking. That was just how Eric was—wealthy and influential, but his words could be harsh. He could be playful, angry, and blunt, especially when it came to Edward.
Eric was just teasing Edward earlier, but he didn't expect to hit Edward's sore spot.
He was surprised that Edward's sore spot was actually Lily .
The bartender, pale with fear, meditated, 'How many dare to grab the collar of King in Mugden in town?'
"Edward, are you falling in love with Lily?" Eric asked.
Edward was half awake from the alcohol, his heart trembling heavily, sweat beading on his forehead.
"Edward, haven't you noticed? Since your divorce, you've become very abnormal." Eric looked deeply into Edward's eyes. "Since young, I've been your only friend. At this point, you still won't tell me the truth?"
"No." Edward forcefully bit out each word, as if trying to etch those words into his heart.
"Alright, you don't like her. Keep on pretending that you don't like her."
"Eric Clark!" Edward flew into a rage out of embarrassment.
Ignoring Edward's anger, Eric continued, "Edward, I'll say it again. If you like Lily and want to be with her again, I will support you. But if you don't have that intention and are just uncomfortable seeing your ex being pursued by other men, then I hope you can give me a chance. Because I know my own heart. I know what I want. I like Lily Brown, and I want to pursue her."
Edward felt like he had been shot in the chest, slowly releasing his grip and staggering back two steps.
Eric straightened up, took a breath to calm himself, and pulled out a sapphire necklace from his suit pocket.
"She..." Edward was suddenly stunned.
"She returned it." Eric frowned and smiled bitterly. "Lily is not the kind of woman who cares about money as you think. As soon as she left you, she returned everything to me. Edward, oh Edward, how did you treat Lily in the past? When Lily saw you, it was like meeting a mortal enemy, seizing every opportunity to provoke you. Doesn't the phrase 'cannot coexist' imply something?"
Edward's lips pressed into a straight line.
Recalling on how he had repeatedly ignored Evelyn's feelings over the past three years, the tattered handmade suit, the closet full of gifts, Edward felt his heart ached.
Evelyn left the hotel after work. Instead of going back home, he headed alone to the grand cathedral in the west of Mugden.
The glittering dome of the grand cathedral was elegant and magnificent.
Under the huge cross, Landon, dressed in a black priest's robe, held the Bible in his hands. His peaceful long eyelashes drooped as he preached to the faithful.
Evelyn sat quietly in the back row, listening attentively. Landon's voice was so pleasant. Iit felt like her body and soul were being cleansed from the inside out.
After the sermon, the faithful dispersed.
Landon closed the Bible, his handsome face wearing a gentle smile as he walked toward his sister.
"Why didn't you tell me you were coming?" Landon reached out and patted Evelyn's head.
"I knew you were busy. I didn't want to disturb you." Evelyn smiled, acting coquettish.
"What's on your mind?" Landon sat next to Evelyn, asking gently.
"Is it that obvious?" Evelyn sighed in frustration, looking dejected. "Landon, I did something wrong today. I used Eric to provoke Edward out of anger. I knew it was wrong, but I couldn't control myself at the time! When I saw Edward with Nicole and competed with Eric to buy a necklace for Nicole, I felt very uncomfortable. I wanted Edward to suffer a bit. Even though we are both divorced, it was meaningless to do so. But I just wanted Edward to have a feeling that was born for me, even if it was resentment."
Landon sighed deeply, reaching out to embrace Evelyn's trembling shoulders.
"Evelyn, do you still have feelings for Edward?" Landon asked.
"Landon, I admit I haven't completely let go. After all, I loved Edward for a long time. I burned my entire youth grandly for him, all those unforgettable memories are shadows of him."
Evelyn rested her head on Landon's broad shoulder, tears glistening in her eyes. "Landon, I'm terrified. I'm afraid I will lose the ability to love in the future. Edward hollowed out my heart. I may never be able to love another man like I loved him."
"Without deep attachment, there is no suffering. Without love, there is no hell. Evelyn, as long as a human heart keeps beating, they will never lose the ability to love." Landon lowered his eyes and patted Evelyn gently. "Don't be afraid. Whatever happens, we'll cross the bridge when the time comes. You just need to be yourself, and bravely pursue the one you love. That's enough for this world."
"I did, but I ended up covered in wounds and feeling unbearable pain." Evelyn's eyes showed hurt. "I loved the wrong person in the wrong time. Everything is just a fleeting illusion. I can't never fall in love with anyone again."
Landon furrowed his brows slightly, sensing that Evelyn, despite her young age, had thoughts of avoiding love, which was not a good sign.
So, Landon shifted his approach, smiling lightly. "Evelyn, don't be too pessimistic. You once deeply loved Edward, which means there are shining points in Edward. It's not all in vain. It's just something goes wrong that between you and Edward."
"In the past, I thought I had a good eye on the person I loved was also outstanding. But looking back now, it seems like I was the most blind in the world," Evelyn sighed.
At that moment, Evelyn's phone vibrated.
It was William calling.
"William, what's up?" Evelyn answered.
"Evelyn! I finally got through to your phone, the reception is so bad!"
William swallowed nervously, sounding excited. "Quick, check Twitter! Go to the live stream! Debra is holding a press conference, publicly apologizing to our hotel staff!"
"What?" Evelyn stood up suddenly, her expression no longer resentful, her beautiful eyes wide open, filled with surprise.
"The press conference was so sudden, the Wellington family probably wanted to resolve it quickly and minimize the impact. But the number of viewers in the live stream has already exceeded five million and is still rising! The Wellington family would rather endure the embarrassment than give in easily. With such a stingy attitude, how can they compare to a big family like KnightSpear Group?"
Evelyn suddenly realized something.
The Wellington family's attitude had changed too quickly.
Debra seemed determined to confront Evelyn yesterday, there was no way she would surrender so quickly. Something must have happened in between to make Debra change her mind.
Patrick always regarded Debra as a pearl in his palm, and with Tiffany protecting her, the Wellington family wouldn't let Debra go.
'Who could have influenced this outcome?' Evelyn thought. 'Could it be Edward?'
Evelyn shook her head vigorously, wanting to dispel this thought, but looking at the Wellington family, besides Edward, no one else had the power to make Debra yield.
'If it was Edward, why would he do this?' Evelyn took a deep breath and hung up the phone to enter the live stream.
At this moment, the live stream was bustling like malls during Christmas. The barrage of comments covered Debra's pale face!
Debra was already standing on the stage, wearing a black dress, bowing to a group of reporters, her face pale with hints of black and red, looking like a rotten tomato, very unsightly.
[Face the consequences! What's wrong with wealthy families, do they really think they can control the world?!]
[Did Debra put on makeup? She's still wearing makeup in this situation? Has Debra's head and butt switched places? She's acting like she's someone important!]
[Is this the beauty with no brains?]
[How foolish! She's a beauty? I don't think so!]
Evelyn watched the flood of negative comments coldly, a mocking smile playing on her lips.
"I lost my personal belongings and I vented my emotions on an innocent hotel waitress, causing her to almost have a seizure and nearly make a big mistake. Once again, I deeply feel guilty and offer my sincere apologies to that waitress."
Debra bowed, pretending to look pitiful, squeezing out two tears after a long time.
"But like everyone else, I am an ordinary person. I also have worries, and there are times when I can't control my emotions. So, I hope everyone won't be too harsh on me. These past two days, I have faced unprecedented online abuse, losing sleep every day, and my mind is on the verge of collapse. I admit my mistake, but I hope everyone can look at this matter rationally. Do not involve my family and don't insult them, please."
[This is ridiculous! Debra can apologize, but why is she putting on a show?]
[A person who curses others can still pretends to be pitiful, while the person being cursed doesn't even complain!]
[If it weren't for the public outcry from netizens, Debra would never have apologized to that girl! This matter could have easily been covered up!]
[Crocodile tears, there will absolutely be no sympathy for Debra!]
Evelyn narrowed her eyes cunningly, her smile deepening.
Debra had been pampered at Riverside Villa since childhood, and today was undoubtedly the most suffering day of her twenty-five years.
Naturally, Debra was very dissatisfied, but being dissatisfied was for the best.
If she just gave up like this, it would be so boring.
Suddenly, another call came in, interrupting Evelyn's enjoyment of the live stream.
