Chapter 399 Stop Wasting Time on Me

Ulysses had his usual rebellious smile at the corner of his mouth, but he was quietly observing Gilbert.

That night at the bar, after the woman who looked very much like Evelyn hurriedly left, she got into the Alexander family's car.

The alley was deep, and the car's interior lights were off, so Ulysses didn't see clearly who the man sitting inside was.

But as a top agent, his observation and memory were far superior to ordinary people. By recognizing the man's silhouette, he was more than seventy percent sure that the man sitting next to Sarah that night was Gilbert.

"Hello, Ulysses." Gilbert immediately put on a warm and friendly smile and greeted first.

"You recognize me?" Ulysses raised an eyebrow, slightly surprised.

"Yes, Evelyn and I were childhood friends. My father, Elbert, and Uncle Charlie were also good friends. I used to play at your house often when I was a kid."

Gilbert said with a gentle tone, smiling unhurriedly, "I know Mrs. Taylor has five children. Evelyn has four brothers, and among them, Aaron and you share the same last name as Mrs. Taylor."

Ulysses squinted his eyes, waiting for him to continue.

"I've met Aaron. He's now holding an important position in the military. But you, I've never met." Gilbert said with a light smile.

"Your analysis is good. It seems you know quite a lot about our family." Ulysses tilted his head, looking amused.

"As long as it's about Evelyn, I always hope to know more, out of concern for her." Gilbert's eyes were bright and sincere.

Ulysses had already learned from Simon that the Alexander family's fourth son, Gilbert, was passionately pursuing Evelyn.

As a brother, he had to keep a close watch on the men who liked Evelyn. He didn't want Evelyn to be hurt by another scumbag like Edward.

But the Gilbert in front of him made Ulysses feel a bit uncomfortable.

Adding to the incident at the bar that night, he was even less satisfied with Gilbert.

Although there was no concrete evidence to confirm that the man was Gilbert, Ulysses still felt uneasy.

"I heard Evelyn had a car accident. I'm very worried about her and want to go in and see her. Is that okay?" Gilbert took a step forward, his voice urgent.

"Evelyn..."

"Ulysses."

Before Ulysses could finish speaking, a sweet voice called out.

He turned around quickly and saw Jennifer closing the door to the ward, walking lightly towards them.

"Is Evelyn asleep?" Ulysses asked quickly.

Jennifer pressed her lips together and shook her head, then looked at Gilbert, "Evelyn vaguely heard Gilbert's voice. She said if Gilbert is here, let him in to see her."

Gilbert's eyes lit up brightly at her words.

"Since it's Evelyn's wish, please go ahead," Ulysses said in a flat tone, stepping aside to make way.

"Thank you."

Gilbert still smiled gracefully and hurried past him.

Seeing Gilbert enter the ward and close the door, Ulysses immediately called out to Jennifer.

"Jennifer, tell me, what exactly is the relationship between Gilbert and Evelyn?"

"How should I put it, childhood sweethearts? Innocent playmates?" Jennifer pressed her fingertips to her lips, frowning slightly.

"Really?" Ulysses was shocked, his eyes wide open.

"It's true. When they were in elementary school, they were inseparable. At that time, Gilbert was often bullied by classmates, and it was always Evelyn who helped him out. I remember it very clearly."

"Later, Uncle Elbert brought the Alexander family's second son Randy and fourth son Gilbert to our house. From what Mom said, it seemed like they wanted to introduce a marriage partner for Evelyn."

"Did Charlie agree?" Ulysses asked quickly.

Jennifer gently shook her head, "No, I heard them say that Dad seemed dissatisfied with both Randy and Gilbert, so he never responded. But Uncle Elbert seemed very persistent, as if he was determined that Evelyn would be the Alexander family's daughter-in-law."

"He wishes! Evelyn is so good, pairing her with the Alexander family's son would be a waste! Charlie probably thought the same, so he didn't agree." Ulysses pouted and muttered softly, "Charlie has some good judgment after all."

"Evelyn, I'm here."

Gilbert walked into the ward lightly, seeing Evelyn sitting at the bedside, half asleep and half awake, her cheeks so thin it made his heart ache.

He admitted he was full of schemes and had done many bad things.

But in loving Evelyn, he had given his unprecedented true heart.

In this life, Gilbert would marry no one but Evelyn. For fifteen years, his feelings had never changed.

"Gilbert, you're here." Evelyn snapped out of her daze and smiled at him, "Thank you for coming to see me. Have a seat."

She raised her hand and pointed to the sofa.

But Gilbert only wanted to sit by her side, to be as close to her as possible.

He wanted to hold her, embrace her, kiss her.

Gilbert's Adam's apple rolled dryly, and he sat by the bed with a trembling breath, gently asking, "Where are you hurt? Does it still hurt? How did the accident happen?"

"It's just superficial wounds, nothing serious."

Evelyn's clear eyes curved with a bit of a bitter smile, "It's just a pity about my limited edition Bugatti's La Voiture Noire. It's probably totaled."

"It doesn't matter. A car is just a thing. Your safety is more important than anything."

Gilbert couldn't help but hold her hand, gripping it tightly in his warm palm, "Whatever car you want, I can get it for you, even if there's only one in the world."

Evelyn's pupils shrank slightly, hurriedly pulling her hand out of Gilbert's palm, the unease in her eyes stabbing Gilbert's heart.

Why? She and Edward had no possibility anymore, so why didn't she have any intention of accepting him? Was he that unworthy? Unworthy of even a glimmer of hope?

"Evelyn, I..."

"Gilbert, thank you for your sincerity."

Evelyn's bright eyes turned red, her smile tinged with sadness, "But I no longer want to have anything to do with love, Gilbert. Whether now or in the future, I can't accept your feelings. Don't waste your time on me anymore."
