Chapter 85 She Was Pampered Like a Little Princess
Edward was stunned after he spoke. He had no proof, just assumptions about her. He even hoped Lily felt the same, thinking it would show his importance to her.
"Edward, are you overestimating yourself?" Evelyn forced a smile despite the pain in her chest. "Honestly, I never planned to get back at you. Even if you marry Nicole or someone else, I wouldn't care. Hating you is just a waste of time."
Edward felt a sharp pang in his heart. "Lily, you..."
"Betty's appointments are booked until the end of next year. She's very strict; even the First Lady would have to wait. Maybe she wanted to help me out, but I wouldn't use a friend for revenge. If I wanted to, I'd just slap Nicole a few times. Why go through all this trouble? You really don't get me." Evelyn's tone was playful, but her smile didn't reach her eyes.
Edward saw the emptiness in her eyes, feeling another stab in his chest.
"Lily!" As they stood there, a familiar gentle voice called out. It was Landon!
Evelyn took the chance to shake off Edward and ran to Landon. He gently hugged her. "Sorry, work held me up."
"It's okay," Evelyn sniffled, her eyes sore.
"He didn't give you a hard time, did he?" Landon asked, glancing at Edward who stood frozen.
Evelyn shook her head. "Let's go home."
Edward stood there for a moment, then quickly followed them outside. By the Rolls-Royce, William was waiting for Landon and Evelyn.
"My feet are killing me in these heels. Sneakers are so much better," Evelyn pouted.
"William, get the shoes I prepared for Evelyn," Landon said.
William quickly fetched the sneakers from the trunk and placed them at Evelyn's feet. Edward arrived just in time to see Landon kneel and gently swap her heels for sneakers, tying the laces with care.
Evelyn reached into William's suit pocket, grabbed a piece of chocolate, and smiled sweetly. "Let's go home."
Landon held her hand as they got into the car, which quickly drove away. Edward felt an emptiness in his chest, a deep sense of loss. The Evelyn who once waited for him was now being treated like a princess by Landon. Landon, a noble man, humbled himself for the one he loved, his eyes full of affection.
True love is not even wanting her to bend down.
'Seeing Evelyn cherished by Landon, why do I feel so miserable?'
That evening, Nicole found an excuse to follow Edward back to Riverside Villa. "Edward, where did you go? I was so scared when you left me alone."
In the back seat, Nicole hugged Edward, resting her head on his shoulder.
"Nicole," Edward slowly pulled away, his voice cold. "In the future, if you see Lily, who hasn't shown any hostility towards you, don't cause her any trouble, okay?"
"Edward, do you think I'm bullying her?" Nicole's eyes filled with tears.
"Aren't you?"
"I..."
"She didn't give you a hard time today."
Edward's cold gaze fell on Nicole's pale face. "No matter how much you resent her, Lily and I are already divorced. After Grandpa's birthday, we'll finalize it, and there'll be nothing between us. Just don't cause any more trouble. That's all I ask."
Edward didn't speak to Nicole again until the Maybach pulled into Riverside Villa. Nicole endured his coldness, silently cursing Lily.
"I'm going upstairs to change," Edward said, leaving with a gloomy face.
Nicole gritted her teeth, thinking she hadn't done anything wrong. 'Lily stole my marriage, had Edward for three years. Even if I killed her, it wouldn't ease my hatred. What's a few taunts? Why is Edward so protective of her? Why?!'
Half an hour later, Edward, now in casual clothes, walked downstairs with May. He heard Debra, Tiffany, and Nicole laughing in the living room.
Debra said, "The cook here needs to be replaced. Since Lily left, the food's been terrible! I didn't expect her to be good at cooking; at least she wasn't completely useless."
Nicole asked, surprised, "Lily cooked for you every day?"
Debra replied, "Of course, she had to make a good impression to marry into the Wellington family. The servants called her a high-class nanny behind her back."
Edward's face turned cold, his fingers clenching tightly.
Tiffany added, "I thought she'd give up. Edward was so cold to her, and the family ignored her. I thought she'd divorce within a year. But she endured for three years. Honestly, she really has a strong heart."
Debra continued, "Thank goodness you came back, or Evelyn would have stayed forever. Shameless!"
Edward couldn't take it anymore. "Have you said enough?!" he roared, his voice icy.
The room fell silent, the air freezing.
"Edward, we were just..." Nicole began, trying to smooth things over.
Edward cut her off harshly, his presence making her shiver. Tiffany and Debra's faces turned ugly.
"Edward, what are you talking about?" Debra asked.
"You enjoyed Lily's contributions, didn't appreciate it, and now you make her a joke. Do you think I have no temper?" Edward's cold eyes were terrifying.
'Lily?! Did we hear wrong?'
They had been married for three years, and Edward always called her by her full name, making everyone think Mrs. Wellington was a pushover. Now, after the divorce, he called her Lily, as if they had a great relationship before!
The three women turned pale, and the servants held their breath.
"Even if Lily and I are divorced, she was still my wife. I won't allow anyone to insult her, especially not here," Edward said, his teeth clenched. "I advise you not to do such low-class things, making a laughingstock of yourselves!"
With that, Edward stormed upstairs, leaving Debra, Tiffany, and Nicole embarrassed and angry. Tiffany's well-maintained face turned red.
"What are you looking at? Get back to work!" Debra yelled at the servants.
Nicole was still in shock. 'I've never seen Edward so angry at home!'
"Look, Nicole, this is the man you're going to marry. You haven't even married him yet, and he's already defending another woman in front of you!" Tiffany said sarcastically.
Nicole was furious and quickly chased after Edward but was stopped by May.
"Sorry, Ms. Adams, Mr. Wellington is in a bad mood and won't be coming down for dinner. Please make yourself at home."
