Chapter 259 Why Didn't You Tell Me?

Edward didn't have a second to be immersed in shock 'cause the cliff under him was about to give way!

"Lily! Move it!" In a panic, Edward shouted out that old, buried name!

Evelyn's eyes went wide, her heart pounding like crazy.

That shout gave her some weird strength, letting her scramble up the cliff edge just in time to throw herself into Edward's arms.

Edward clung to her like his life depended on it.

Right as the cliff crumbled, Edward shielded Evelyn with his body, rolling away just in the nick of time!

His back smashed into a rock, and he let out a pained groan. The hit was brutal, leaving him soaked in cold sweat mixed with rain.

"You hurt?" Evelyn lifted her head from his chest, her eyes full of worry as she looked at his pale, handsome face.

"Nah." Edward bit back the pain, his deep voice steady.

Evelyn, still shaking, pressed her wet body against his chest and let out a long breath.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Edward stared at her with wet lashes, his voice rough.

"What?" Evelyn's heart skipped a beat, avoiding his intense gaze.

"Why didn't you tell me we met thirteen years ago? Why didn't you tell me you're the girl I saved here back then?" Edward's words came out in ragged breaths, a mix of bitterness and sorrow eating him up inside.

Evelyn's throat tightened, her dirty face deathly pale.

'So, he called me Lily 'cause he remembers everything? Why now? Why after thirteen years? I'd rather he never remembered who I am,' she thought.

"Tell me, Evelyn. Speak up!" Edward couldn't hold back, gripping her chin and forcing her to look into his bloodshot eyes.

"Have you remembered why I named myself Lily when we got married?" Evelyn's gaze was heavy, her heart aching.

Edward's face twisted, her sharp words cutting deep.

'Of course, I remember. I saved her, asked her name, but she stayed quiet. So, I just called her 'Lily'. Never thought the girl I saved would show up as my wife thirteen years later. And she kept it all hidden,' he thought.

"So, you remember now." Evelyn let out a bitter laugh, "You didn't need to remember. I never wanted you to. In your life, whether it was thirteen years ago, three years ago, or now, I'm just a passerby."

Edward's breath caught.

He hadn't done anything wrong, saving her, then forgetting her, it all made sense. But still, a heavy guilt weighed him down, suffocating.

The girl in front of him had been head over heels for him for thirteen years, but all she got was his cold shoulder. She chased after him, wanting to be part of his world, but he shut her out, his heart locked up tight.

"I'm sorry." Edward's lips quivered, his voice choked, "I had no idea you were that girl. If I had known..."

"Even if you knew, you'd still have divorced me, right?" Evelyn smiled, a mix of relief and resignation. She had regrets but no lingering feelings, "Whether I'm Evelyn or Lily, it's just a name. It doesn't change what we had. And you don't need to apologize. I should thank you. You saved me back then and left. I didn't know your name or who you were, so I couldn't thank you."

"Evelyn, even so, why did you marry me?" Edward asked, the question that had haunted him, "Just because I saved you?"

"It doesn't matter anymore, Edward. It's all in the past. No point digging into it in a marriage that was doomed." Evelyn closed her eyes, shutting the door to her heart that had barely opened, her shoulders trembling, "Now's not the time for this. I'm freezing. Let's go."

In the pouring rain, the ex-couple, who had once been at odds, found a temporary truce. Both were banged up and had to lean on each other to keep moving.

Unfortunately, Evelyn's phone was toast, and Edward's had no signal!

"We must be on the backside of Thunder Peak; otherwise, the phone would have a signal." Evelyn stumbled, gasping for breath.

Cold and hungry, she was running on fumes.

What kept her going was the will not to drag Edward down. Now, her legs felt like lead, barely her own.

"Before I came to find you, I told Bart to send a helicopter to search the mountain." Edward, seeing her struggle, quickly held her waist to keep her from falling.

"In this weather, search and rescue will be tough." she said before finally collapsing, her body giving out.

Edward, quick on his feet, scooped her up, her soft, wet body in his arms, inhaling the damp, earthy scent.

His jaw clenched, his heart aching, 'How much has the tough-as-nails Evelyn gone through before I got here?'

"Let's find some shelter." Edward bent down and carried Evelyn on his back, trudging forward with uneven steps.

"Edward." Evelyn lay on his back, her arms around his neck, weakly asking, "Can we make it out?"

"We can." Edward didn't hesitate.

"I almost died once." she weakly said.

"We won't die, Evelyn." Edward's breath deepened, his broad palm gently grasping her dirty little hand when she wasn't looking.
