Chapter 127 The Sense of Inferiority
The Yates family was in chaos, everyone lost in their own thoughts. No one noticed Ivy's cold, triumphant smile or the obsession in Felicity's eyes.
"What's done is done; no point in dwelling on it."
"Landon, Samantha, you can sort your issues privately. Let's focus on Ethan and Felicity."
Ivy chimed in, "Ashley, the Zito family values Felicity, and Ethan's ruined her reputation. Just let Ethan marry her. As for your alimony, we can discuss it later."
Ivy thought to herself, 'A woman who can't have kids has no place here. She should just leave!'
Ashley's face went pale. "Mom, what are you saying?"
Ethan stood up, looking grim. "Mom, I've said before, I won't treat marriage as a joke!"
Ashley looked serious. "Mom, what did I do wrong? Why are you pushing me to divorce Ethan?"
Ivy stood up. "Ashley, I was happy about the Yates and White families uniting, but you can't be a mother. Do you want Ethan to have no descendants?"
Everyone looked at Ashley in shock, with pity in their eyes. Her inability to conceive had become public gossip.
Being insulted like that must have been a blow to her dignity!
Ivy continued, "Felicity is different. She has a good background and is young. If she marries into the Yates family, I could have a grandchild by next year."
Felicity blushed. "Aunt, stop it..."
She glanced at Landon, who looked frustrated, and felt a pang of sadness.
'Did last night's events trouble him that much?'
Samantha, who had been silent, accidentally met Liam's gaze. Their eyes locked for a moment, and a strange feeling arose, making them quickly look away.
"Felicity, don't be shy. Did Ethan wear you out last night? I'll have the maid give you a massage later!"
"Ivy Yates!"
Ethan called her name coldly, full of warning, his eyes blazing with anger. He exuded a powerful chill, making the two women tremble.
Felicity looked weak. "Aunt, he's so fierce."
"Ethan, why are you so fierce..."
Ivy shielded Felicity. "Let's discuss this calmly. You can't hurt Felicity."
Ethan approached, his voice cold. "Mom, so last night's incident was your plan, wasn't it?"
If that were true, he would cut ties with his mother!
Ivy's eyes flickered. "Last night was an accident. What does it have to do with me?"
"And Mr. White, please understand, the Yates family needs a heir, I can't accept a woman unable to conceive to be Ethan's wife. She'll ruin us. Take her back. If she really is your sister, she'll live comfortably. If not..."
Ethan was livid.
If she weren't his mother, he would've thrown her out!
She was pushing his limits!
Landon and Liam, always protective, wouldn't stand for her attacking Ashley.
Landon said, "Mrs. Ivy Yates, you said it yourself. She won't be Ethan's wife any more. The Yates family should compensate us, and we'll take Ashley back. She'll still be our treasure! It's Ashley who doesn't care for the Yates family, not the other way around!"
Liam added, "And what do you mean if she's not our sister? She is our precious sister! If you bully her, the White family won't let you off!"
Ivy laughed angrily. "She can't have kids, and you want us to compensate? Why don't you just rob us!"
"Has the DNA report come out? Are you so sure? Aren't you afraid of slapping your own face?"
The argument continued.
"Enough!"
Ashley couldn't take it anymore. She smiled bitterly. "Mom, because I can't have kids, you want to drive me away?"
"Yes!"
Ashley's heart was pierced with pain.
For the first time, the always confident Ashley felt defeat and inferiority.
"Ashley, don't mind her! We can adopt a child."
Ethan said, "Mom, if you keep saying hurtful things to Ashley, please leave!"
Ethan's gaze was firm. "I don't care whether she could have kids. Don't impose your thoughts on me. I won't divorce Ashley, and I won't marry Ms. Zito."
"Ethan, if you don't marry Ms. Zito, I'll kill myself!"
With that, Ivy pretended to run into the wall.
Ethan's heart tightened, and he instinctively wanted to stop her, but Liam reacted first and blocked Ivy.
"Move aside, let me die."
Ethan's hand froze in mid-air. Seeing Ivy's shrewish behavior, his temples throbbed painfully.
Ashley looked at Ethan, seeing the concern and care for Ivy in his eyes, a mix of emotions sweeping over her.
She knew Ethan and Ivy didn't get along, but Ethan cared about Ivy. When Ivy tried to run into the wall, Ethan instinctively wanted to stop her.
This made her happy yet sad.
Happy that Ethan cared about Ivy, sad that Ivy despised her...
Ashley, holding back her heartache, said, "Stop it. I agree to your proposal..."
