Ethan tried to make amends, and Ashley's eyes flickered with a hint of something.
She didn't respond directly but kept analyzing the situation.
"Your reasoning is possible," Ashley said.
"You insist you didn't touch her, which made me think it was a setup."
"But why did the hospital find your secretions in Felicity the next day?"
"And Samantha and Landon also had tests confirming they were together."
"It just doesn't add up."
Ashley avoided the topic of divorce, which bummed Ethan out. After thinking for a bit, he said, "Could the hospital have messed up?"
Ashley was surprised. "The hospital's machines malfunctioned?"
Ethan sneered, "Maybe it's a human error."
Ethan, seasoned in business, was used to such tactics.
Ashley was shocked. "Are you saying the hospital staff were bribed and the reports are fake?"
Ethan nodded. "Even if we did something while unconscious, I'd have felt different when I woke up. But I felt normal, so I'm sure I didn't touch her."
"The hospital is under the Yates Group, so the tech is solid. The only explanation is bribed doctors."
"So that's how it was! No wonder you're so sure!"
Ashley felt like smacking her head. "Why didn't I think of that!"
"So, what's next?"
"I'll have someone investigate the hospital."
"You handle the hospital, and I'll look into Felicity."
"Okay."
They agreed.
Ethan cupped her face and kissed her. "Honey, now that the misunderstanding is cleared up, don't divorce me, okay?"
Ethan's gaze captivated her, making Ashley's heart race. She tried to look away, but he held her face steady.
"Honey, don't avoid me. Do you really want to divorce me, or were you just angry?"
Ashley bit her lip, "I..."
She was forced to look into Ethan's determined eyes, her face flushed with shyness or guilt.
She never distrusted him; she just felt unworthy.
"Let's hold off on the divorce until the matter is fully investigated," Ashley said, quickly lowering her head to avoid crying.
"Okay, but if you bring up divorce again..." Ethan gave her a mischievous look, making Ashley a bit scared.
"What are you going to do? I'm half-disabled now; don't think of using force on me."
Ethan grinned, "I wouldn't hit you. I would only..."
He whispered something in her ear, making Ashley's face turn bright red. She glared at him, playfully scolding, "What nonsense are you talking about."
"I'm serious. If you bring up divorce again, I'll do exactly what I said."
Ashley blushed even more, which brightened Ethan's mood.
Her reaction showed she had feelings for him, so this marriage wasn't over yet.
Ashley changed the subject. "Thomas said you were sick. Are you okay?"
Ethan nodded. "Yeah, it hurts here."
He pointed to his mouth, and Ashley looked surprised. "Toothache? Mouth pain?"
Ethan wrapped his arms around her waist, laid her down, and smiled mischievously. "My whole body hurts, and only your kiss can make it better."
Then he kissed her, urgent and wild.
