Chapter 385 I Do

In today's society, trending news typically covers either the best or worst aspects of life. Hearing Diannel's comments, Ethan furrowed his brow and said, "Did she write something unethical or morally questionable that's being blown out of proportion? If so, we should immediately disqualify her and blacklist her from the medical community."

Ashley instinctively raised an eyebrow.

Although Ethan wasn't on speaker, the car was quiet enough that Ashley could clearly hear everything. She was surprised that her paper had gone viral. Hearing Ethan's skeptical tone, she made a soft noise of disapproval, glaring at him before turning to look out the window with a pout.

Ethan was suddenly confused. Why was Ashley upset?

Diannel explained, "Mr. Yates, she didn't write anything controversial. Her paper on 'Medication for Late-Stage Cancer Treatment' went viral because of its tremendous impact. The response is polarized—some people think she's brilliant while others question the validity of her research."

"A treatment for late-stage cancer?" Ethan asked, shocked.

Katherine had just been diagnosed with cancer. Though it was in the early stages with available treatments, if her condition were to worsen, they would need better medication. Currently, there was no direct treatment on the market. If this medication proved effective, Katherine would have an 80% chance of recovery.

Ethan's heart raced as he urgently said, "Diannel, contact this author who calls themselves 'Evil Spirit.' I want to meet them personally."

"Right away, Mr. Yates."

After ending the call, Ethan's mind was reeling. Katherine had just been diagnosed, and now a potential treatment had emerged—in that moment, Ethan felt like the luckiest person alive.

Looking over at Ashley, he remembered she was upset. "Sweetheart, why are you angry? Did my phone call disturb you?"

"Let's just say it did," Ashley replied coolly.

Ethan pulled her into his arms and kissed her passionately until she was breathless.

"Don't keep your feelings bottled up," he said. "Tell me what's wrong."

He could tell she was upset, but didn't understand why.

"You're being so domineering," Ashley pouted.

She was actually upset because he had questioned 'Evil Spirit's' ethics and viewpoint—since she was Evil Spirit, it naturally struck a nerve. But then she realized Ethan had no idea she was the author, so her anger dissipated. Besides, she couldn't let him know about her medical knowledge.

Seeing her silent, Ethan persisted, "Tell me why you're upset."

Nestled in his arms, Ashley told her first-ever lie: "You were talking to Diannel and ignoring me. It hurt my feelings."

Ethan laughed. "Darling, are you jealous of Diannel?"

Ashley relaxed, relieved her excuse had worked.

Wrapping her arms around his neck, she said playfully, "Yes, I'm jealous. Do you mind?"

Ethan seated her on his lap. "I don't mind at all. It shows you care. I was thoughtless—from now on, I'll hold you while taking calls so you won't feel neglected."

"That's more like it," Ashley replied, displaying impressive acting skills.

Ethan took out his phone. "Let's read the news together."

"Okay," Ashley nodded obediently.

Embracing in the car, they both focused on the phone screen, searching for topics related to 'Evil Spirit's paper.'

"Honey, there's currently no medication that can directly treat late-stage cancer," Ethan said. "Do you think Evil Spirit's claims could be true?"

Ashley's eyes flickered as she played dumb. "How would I know?"

Ethan gazed at her thoughtfully. "Grandma was just diagnosed with cancer. I'm worried her condition might worsen. If Evil Spirit's claims are genuine, I'd spare no expense setting up a research lab. It would help both the researcher and Grandma."

Ashley looked deeply at Ethan. "Honey, is this just about helping Grandma?"

Ethan smiled gently. "Not entirely. Many people around the world suffer from this disease. If this medication really works, developing it and bringing it to market could help countless people. That would be truly remarkable."

Ashley's eyes shone as her heart raced.

She hadn't initially planned on doing something so significant. Recreating Panacea was meant to save Katherine, and she had published the paper under pressure.

Now, hearing Ethan say this medication could help many more people, a bold idea formed in Ashley's mind.

Ethan asked, "Darling, do you think Evil Spirit would be willing to develop this medication if I contacted them?"

Ashley's eyes brightened with determination. Gathering her courage, she replied, "I'm certain they would be willing!"

Ethan didn't notice the spark in her eyes. Looking out the window, he said, "I trust your intuition, sweetheart. We're home—let's get out."

After exiting the car, Ashley's phone rang. Seeing the familiar number, she stepped away from Ethan before answering, "Hello, William."

"Ashley, I heard you were looking for me?" William said.

Taking a deep breath, Ashley confidently replied, "William, regarding your proposal from before—my answer is yes!"
