Chapter 321 Was John's Foolishness Caused by Poisoning?
Ashley and William showed up at the field, where all sorts of veggies were growing. As they picked, they chatted away.
Ashley asked, "Hey, why are you always so cold to my family? It gives off the wrong vibe. Can't you be a bit nicer?"
William shot back, "Do I really need to be nice to everyone?"
Ashley rolled her eyes, clearly annoyed. "Yes, you're the best, but you don't have to be so indifferent. They're my family, and since I'm your apprentice, they're kinda your family too. Can't you just be a bit more friendly?"
William just snorted and said, "You keep picking here. I gotta take care of something over there."
Ashley shrugged, "Alright, whatever."
William lived alone in the mountains, eating the veggies he grew himself. He also had a bunch of medicinal herbs and some poultry behind the mountain.
While Ashley was busy picking veggies, William headed to the back mountain and came back after more than half an hour. He sounded impatient, "Are you done yet?"
Ashley looked at her basket full of fresh veggies and said, "Almost. Let's head back."
As they got closer, William was carrying a basket full of herbs and holding a chicken and a duck, probably his own.
Ashley raised an eyebrow, "You act all tough, but you're a softie. Look at all this top-quality stuff you got. If you were nicer, my family would be blown away by your hospitality."
William just gave her a side-eye.
They walked along the country path, making a pretty picture.
William asked, "Why haven't I seen your husband around?"
Ashley was caught off guard by the mention of Ethan and said, "He's on a business trip. He'll be back in about ten days."
William clicked his tongue, "Ah, so that's why you're sticking around for ten days. I get it! Now that you have a family and a husband, you don't need me anymore, huh?"
Ashley sighed, "Come on, William. How could I not need you? You're like my parents. Without you, I wouldn't be where I am today."
William snorted, "Good to hear you know that."
As they neared the bamboo house, William stopped and got serious, "Let's talk business."
Ashley looked at him, confused.
William asked, "What's up with your dad's illness?"
Ashley replied, "Landon and Liam said that after I got separated from my family, my parents were devastated. One went insane, and the other cried until they went blind."
William frowned. "Didn't you notice your dad's dark circles and purple lips? Those are signs of long-term poisoning."
William added, "Maybe his insanity is linked to the poisoning!"
Ashley's eyes widened in shock. "Wait, you think my dad's insanity is because of poisoning?"
William nodded seriously. He'd been practicing medicine for decades, and Asclepius had learned his skills from him. William's medical expertise was way beyond Asclepius's.
So, when William spoke, people listened.
Ashley's heart pounded. "How could this happen? Who would poison my dad to make him go insane?"
William snorted, "How would I know? You rich folks are always scheming against each other. Maybe someone did it for inheritance or power!"
Ashley thought for a moment, "I haven't been in the White family for long, so I don't really get all the relationships. I'll ask Liam about it later."
William nodded, and they walked into the bamboo house.
Thinking that her dad's insanity might be due to poisoning, Ashley felt troubled, trying to figure out who would do such a thing.
"Mr. Lynch, Ashley, you're back," Liam said, supporting Mia as they came to greet them. "Need any help?"
Ashley was about to say no when William cut in, "Of course, you can't expect others to take care of you if you don't help with the meal."
Liam laughed awkwardly.
Ashley nudged William, as if asking him to be nicer.
William cleared his throat, "There's a guest room here. Help them to the room to rest, then come out to prepare dinner."
"Okay." Liam nodded, then helped Mia and said, "Mom, be careful."
Mia nodded and, with Liam's help, entered the room. John was also taken to the room by Liam. The two elderly people, exhausted from the journey, fell asleep shortly after lying down.
Liam tucked them in and rolled up his sleeves to help in the kitchen.
Taking advantage of William's absence, Liam whispered to Ashley, "Ashley, your mentor is so strict. It must have been tough growing up."
Ashley smiled, "He's just tough on the outside but soft on the inside. He pretends to be fierce, but look, he prepared all this chicken, duck, and fish for you, knowing you might not like bland food."
Hearing this, Liam noticed the ingredients in the kitchen and looked embarrassed, "Ashley, do I have to kill the chicken and duck?"
Liam looked reluctant.
Ashley smiled, "Should I do it then?"
Liam quickly shook his head, "No way, I can't let you do that!"
Liam took a deep breath and said resolutely, "I'll do it!"
Ashley chuckled and continued sorting the vegetables.
Liam, holding a knife, chased the chicken and duck around. They ran so fast that he kept shouting, "Don't run, I can't catch you. No way, I can't let Ashley look down on me."
Liam's voice echoed, scaring away the nearby birds and animals.
The whole wooden house was in chaos, filled with noise and excitement.
William couldn't take it anymore and shouted, "Enough noise! If anyone makes another sound, I'll poison their mouth shut!"
