Chapter 44 Danger Approaches
Ethan's eyelids felt like they weighed a ton. He wanted to wake up but just couldn't open his eyes.
Out of nowhere, Ashley's phone rang.
Not wanting to disturb Ethan, Ashley stepped outside to take the call. "Ashley, please save me..."
It was Samatha.
"What's up?"
"The project manager keeps breathing down my neck about these drawings. I have no idea what I'm doing! I'm losing it. If you don't come fix this, I'm done helping you."
"Hang tight, I'm on my way."
Ashley was torn, worried about Ethan but knowing she had to help Samatha. She found Diannel and said, "Diannel, I need to head to Elisa's place. If Ethan wakes up and asks for me, give me a call."
"Got it."
Ashley took one last look at Ethan before heading out with the project manager to the studio where Samatha was.
"Ashley, finally! It's so stuffy in here. I need to get out and have some fun..."
Samatha hugged her, venting her frustration.
"Thanks for holding down the fort, Samatha."
Samatha pulled her aside, away from prying eyes.
"Ashley, I don't get it. Why do you hide from Ethan that you're Elisa? Why not just tell him? Why drag me into this charade?"
Ashley's eyes flickered. "If I spill all my secrets to Ethan, how can I stay under the radar? Plus, we're in a contract marriage. If we don't fall for each other, it's divorce city. No need for anyone else to know my business."
Samatha thought it over. "Fair point."
"Tell the project manager you need inspiration and that I should come with you. I'll sneak you the drawings."
"Deal."
They executed their plan and slipped out of the studio.
Samatha felt a weight lift off her shoulders and was ready to hit the town. But Ashley had a deadline in three days and no time to play, so she went back to work.
Ashley was deep in concentration, unaware of the looming danger.
Ava had just landed in Ferndale. She tried calling Ethan, but his phone was off. So, she called Diannel and found out Ethan was in the hospital with a fever. She rushed over.
After some hassle, Ava finally made it to Ethan's room. Seeing him unconscious, she offered to take care of him, sending Diannel to wait outside.
Ava gazed at the sleeping Ethan, her eyes full of longing. She lay beside him on the hospital bed and snapped a close-up selfie.
"Ethan, I have to win you back!"
Chris had also just landed in Ferndale.
He'd been waiting for Ashley to call, but she hadn't, driving him nuts. When he found out she was in Ferndale, he hopped on a plane too. He tried calling her, but Ashley usually kept her phone on silent while drawing, so she missed his calls.
Chris's eyes darkened with anger. "Ashley, why aren't you answering? When I find you, I'm not letting you out of my sight!"
Meanwhile, Ashley's eyelids started twitching wildly as she drew.
She figured she was just tired, so she rubbed her temples and kept working. Before she knew it, it was already 6:30 p.m.
Ashley had cranked out a dozen drafts, all mature and alluring, perfectly capturing Kelsey's vibe.
She picked up her phone and saw a bunch of missed calls. Just as she was about to return them, there was a knock on the door.
"Come in."
A guard stepped in. "Mrs. Yates, Kelsey asked me to inform you to dress up for tonight's dance party."
"Got it."
Ashley called Diannel. "Diannel, has Ethan woken up?"
Diannel peeked through the small window in the door and saw two people on the bed. Her heart skipped a beat. "Mrs. Yates, Mr. Yates is still sleeping."
"Kelsey invited me to a party tonight. Let me know when he wakes up, and I'll head to the hospital right away."
"Will do."
After hanging up, Diannel felt uneasy about the scene in the hospital room and made a loud noise at the door.
With a loud bang.
Ethan's eyes snapped open, and he sat up straight.
"Where am I?"
His voice was hoarse.
"Ethan, you're awake?"
"Ava, what are you doing here?"
Ethan noticed they were lying on the same bed. His face went pale, and he quickly checked his clothes. Everything was in place.
He jumped out of bed. Ava followed, grabbing his arm. "Ethan, I've been here the whole time. You had a cold and fever, and I was taking care of you. I got sleepy and lay down for a bit. You don't mind, do you?"
Ethan squinted at her, suspicious.
In his haze, he thought he heard a familiar voice. Was it Ava?
Instead of answering, he asked, "You've been here the whole time?"
'Where's Ashley?' He pondered.
Seeing his doubtful look, a flicker of guilt crossed Ava's face. She quickly changed the subject. "Of course, why would I lie? By the way, I have great news. I found my parents!"
