Chapter 239 Cut all Ties
It was a well-meaning question, but to Ethan and Ashley, it hit like a ton of bricks.
Michael still had no clue that Ashley couldn't have kids anymore.
Outside the door, Ashley's face went ghostly white when she heard that. She glanced down at her flat stomach, a flicker of sadness in her eyes.
Ethan dropped his gaze, his thick lashes hiding the hurt in his eyes.
They'd been through hell and back, and now they couldn't be parents. Only they knew that kind of pain.
Ethan's throat bobbed, but he didn't say anything. Instead, he switched gears, "Grandpa, let's not talk about us right now. Did you hear my parents are getting back together?"
"Getting back together?" Michael's voice went up a notch, "When's this happening? Why haven't they told me?"
Ethan smirked at his reaction, "Looks like they're planning to do it first and tell you later."
Outside, Ashley pulled herself together and knocked softly.
"Come in," Ethan said.
Ashley walked in with a glass of water. Ethan, feeling jittery, quickly stepped up to take it. "I got it."
Their eyes met, and the unspoken feelings between them made Michael uneasy.
Ashley handed the glass to Ethan, "Thanks."
Noticing the fruit on the bedside table, Ashley said, "Grandpa, let me peel an apple for you."
As soon as she picked up the apple, Ethan swooped in, gently taking it from her to avoid her hurting her wrist.
"I'll handle it. You should rest," Ethan said.
"Okay," Ashley couldn't help but smile and obediently sat by the bed.
Seeing this, Michael nodded approvingly, thinking, 'Ethan's really catching on quick!'
While peeling the apple, Ethan asked, "Grandpa, what do you think about my mom and dad getting back together?"
Michael said, "Ivy probably saw that the Yates Group bounced back and got that prime land in the city center. She wants to get back with James to cash in on the Yates Group's success."
Even though Ethan thought the same, hearing it out loud still stung.
"Yeah, she's that shallow. So, about them remarrying..." Ethan started to ask.
"Don't even bring it up again," Michael said firmly. "Ivy pissed me off so much I ended up in the hospital, and now she wants to marry into the Yates family? No way!"
After blowing off some steam, Michael cautiously looked at Ethan and asked, "Ethan, do you still want them to get back together?"
Hearing this, Ashley also looked at Ethan.
"If you want them to reconcile..." Michael sighed, "As long as you're okay with it, I can accept it."
Michael knew Ethan had always craved family love since he was a kid. Even though he had his own family and career now, that longing never really went away.
But Ivy's actions had shattered Ethan's heart. Even though he still yearned for his parents' love, he didn't want a mom who was all about the money.
Ethan said firmly, "She hurt the people I care about the most. No way I'm letting her get back with Dad!"
Even though he sounded tough, Ethan felt a deep sadness inside.
Ashley, who had been quiet, felt her heart ache seeing him like this.
Michael sighed, patting his hand gently. "Ethan, you gotta understand, not everyone deserves to be called 'mom.'"
Ethan nodded, pushing down his sadness, and said, "Grandpa, about the second round of financing for that land in the city center, I heard from Diannel that the Xavier family wanted to invest, but I turned them down."
"Good call! Your dad's a real idiot for even thinking about getting back with her," Michael said.
Ethan gave a bitter smile, "He probably fell for her sweet talk again!"
Ethan continued, "Speaking of the second round of financing, George is stepping up. He got in touch with that big-shot investor Josselin from Maridia. By now, he should be in Maridia."
Michael thought of George and nodded approvingly. But remembering the last crisis at the Yates Group when they tried to take over the Yates family, he felt a bit uneasy.
Still, business is business...
The investment for the land development was crucial. Michael said, "George is solid. With his help, the financing should go smoothly."
"Okay." Michael nodded.
Ethan checked the time and said, "Grandpa, it's getting late. You should rest. I'll come by again tomorrow."
"Alright, take care on your way out." Michael watched as Ethan and Ashley left together.
Outside the ward, just as Ashley was about to say something, Ethan's phone rang. "Hello."
"Ethan, Ivy's in the hospital, demanding to see you. Can you come?" It was James's voice.
Ethan's voice turned icy, "Not my problem. Starting today, I'm cutting all ties with Ivy. Tomorrow, I'll make it official!"
"Ethan, do you really have to be so harsh?" On the other end, Ivy sounded desperate hearing Ethan's words.
Ethan sneered, "You know Grandpa means more to me than anything, and you still pushed him into the hospital. Ivy, we're done today!"
