Chapter 277 They're Not Biologically Related
Ethan really didn't wanna look at that document. But the memory of Doris risking her neck for him yesterday, coupled with Ashley's persistent nagging, made him wonder if there might be something to it.
Ethan nodded. "Alright, I'll check it out."
Ashley looked relieved and said, "I'll pull over at the corner. It's just a short walk to the hospital. I'll go see Ms. Jones."
"Cool." Ethan drove to the corner and stopped.
Before hopping out, Ashley kissed him on the forehead, "Babe, good luck with your work."
"Thanks, be safe. Hit me up if anything comes up." Ethan grinned.
"Will do."
After they split, Ethan headed to the Yates Group, and Ashley made her way to the hospital to visit Doris.
Just as she got to the hospital entrance, Ashley's phone buzzed. It was Pauline, "Girl, you won't believe what I found out at the police station! Oh my God, you gotta see it to believe it!"
Ashley asked, "What’s up?"
Pauline said, "Thirty years ago, Ivy claimed she was knocked up with James's kid, and they got hitched because of it. Then, Ivy went abroad and stayed there for ten months. During those ten months, she partied every night at bars, and her private life was a hot mess."
She added, "She got busted by the local cops, so there's a record. Girl, at that time, Ivy was already over a month pregnant with Ethan. How messed up is that? Drinking and smoking while pregnant, and living like that?"
Hearing this, Ashley snorted, feeling even more disgusted with Ivy.
Caleb wasn't lying; Ivy was truly the worst.
Ashley gathered her thoughts and replied after a moment, "Pregnant women shouldn't drink, unless..."
On the other end, Pauline gasped, probably guessing the same thing.
Ashley said, "Until we know more, keep this on the down-low."
Ashley was worried that knowing the truth would hurt Ethan again.
Pauline said, "Don't worry, I won't spill."
After hanging up, Ashley went to the inpatient department. Pauline was still in shock, patting her chest and muttering, "No way, could it be that Ivy and Ethan aren't even related?"
Ryan, who had just walked in, didn't catch what Pauline was saying and suddenly asked, "What are you mumbling about?"
Pauline jumped, "Why do you sneak up like that? You scared me!"
Ryan smirked, "You're acting shady, that's why you're scared!"
His eyes suddenly got all intense, "These documents are top secret. I could lose my job for showing you. How are you gonna thank me?"
Pauline blushed and said, "I gotta talk to Ashley. I'm outta here."
Ashley made it to the ICU and asked the doc, "How's she doing today?"
"She's stable today. We'll keep an eye on her for a few more days, and if she stays stable, we can move her to a regular room," the doctor replied.
Ashley let out a sigh of relief.
Looking at the unconscious woman on the bed, Ashley felt a pang of guilt, "Ms. Jones, thank you. If it weren't for you, I can't even imagine what would've happened. Get well soon!"
Suddenly, her phone buzzed. It was May Jareau calling.
Ashley took the call and stepped into a corner, "Hello?"
May sounded surprised, "Ashley, I rushed the tests. Ivy's blood type is B, James's is O, and Ethan's is O. Just like you thought, Ivy and Ethan aren't related!"
Ashley was stunned, "What about the DNA test?"
"The DNA test takes longer, but it will confirm they're definitely not mother and son," Jones replied.
Ashley said, "Got it. Get me that DNA report ASAP!"
Ashley's heart ached. As she suspected, Ivy wasn't Ethan's mom, which explained why Ivy was so awful to him!
For a moment, Ashley felt a deep sense of injustice and pain for Ethan.
She planned to head to the Yates Group but had no idea how to break the news to Ethan.
Just then, she saw a figure entering the ICU out of the corner of her eye. She was puzzled because no one was supposed to go in there. Could it be a doctor making rounds?
Ashley got cautious and followed.
To her shock, she saw a woman with a cane. The woman had her back to her, but Ashley knew right away it was Ivy!
Ivy looked at the unconscious woman on the bed and sneered, "Doris, look at you now, all tied up like this. It makes me so happy. For decades, I could never beat you, but this time, I'll send you straight to hell!"
Outside the door, Ashley covered her mouth in horror.
Seeing Ivy about to pull out Doris's breathing tube, Ashley, in a panic, pressed the emergency button at the door. Instantly, the whole hallway was filled with alarms.
Ashley didn't want to blow her cover, so she turned and hid in a dark corner.
"Why is the alarm going off?" Ivy was furious.
The doctor rushed over and saw Ivy trying to make a run for it. He asked, "Who are you, and why are you here?"
