Chapter 377 Witnessing a Friend Give Birth
Sienna was wheeled into the delivery room, leaving Ashley and Ethan waiting anxiously outside. Ashley tried calling Nathan repeatedly, but each time was met with the automated message: "The number you have dialed is currently unavailable."
"Still no answer?" Ethan asked.
Ashley shook her head. "I've called several times. He must still be in the air."
Ethan frowned disapprovingly. "What kind of man is Nathan? He finally convinced Sienna to come back to him, and now he's not even here for the birth of their child. Completely irresponsible."
Ashley silently agreed but felt it wasn't their place to judge. She just hoped her friend would have a smooth delivery.
Suddenly, a piercing scream echoed from the delivery room, "It hurts!"
Ethan winced at Sienna's agonized cry. A nurse emerged, and Ashley rushed forward. "How is my friend? Why is she screaming like that?"
"She's fully dilated and about to deliver. The pain is causing her to scream," the nurse explained before hurrying back inside.
Ashley paced nervously outside.
From within the delivery room, Sienna's cries continued, "It hurts too much! I can't do this!"
Ethan's face grew increasingly pale as he listened.
The nurse's voice carried through the door, "Stop shouting. Save your energy for pushing. Follow my rhythm—inhale, exhale."
There was a brief silence before Sienna's screams resumed. Ethan began sweating profusely, visibly disturbed by the sounds.
A doctor emerged with blood-stained gloves. "The mother has fainted. Someone should get some food for when she regains consciousness."
"I'll go," Ashley volunteered immediately.
"Make sure it's high-calorie," the doctor added.
"Of course."
As Ashley turned to leave, Ethan stopped her. "Honey, stay here. I'll get it."
Ashley nodded. "Hurry back."
When Ethan returned with chocolates and other snacks, Ashley was on her phone. "Nathan! Finally! Get your ass over here right now—Sienna is in labor and she passed out earlier!"
She ended the call as Ethan handed the food to a nurse.
"Did you reach Nathan?" he asked.
"Yes, he just landed," Ashley replied. "I called him the moment he turned his phone on."
Ethan sat beside her. "Is the baby not here yet?"
"Childbirth doesn't happen that quickly," Ashley said softly.
About ten minutes later, they heard voices from inside, "You're awake. Eat something quickly—you'll need the energy to push."
Soon after, Sienna's agonized screams resumed.
Ethan shuddered at the sound, visibly uncomfortable.
"I can see the baby's head! Push harder!" came a voice from inside.
The screaming intensified, and Ashley's eyes welled with tears.
"Honey, why are you crying?" Ethan asked, concerned.
"I'm worried. Just hearing those sounds... Sienna must be in so much pain."
Ethan stared blankly for a moment before pulling Ashley into his arms. "It's okay. I'm here with you. Don't be afraid."
His throat felt dry and constricted as he comforted her.
Suddenly, hurried footsteps approached. Nathan rushed toward them, his face etched with worry. "Ethan, Ashley! What's happening? Is Sienna okay?"
As if on cue, one final scream from Sienna was followed by the powerful wail of a newborn.
That angelic sound filled all three with joy.
"The baby's born!" Nathan exclaimed, relief washing over him.
Ashley and Ethan exchanged smiles.
A doctor emerged. "Who's the father?"
"I am!" Nathan stepped forward.
"Congratulations, it's a boy. Mother and child are both doing fine."
Nathan's tension melted away, replaced by pure elation.
About thirty minutes later, a doctor brought out the swaddled infant and placed him in Nathan's arms.
Ethan and Ashley peered curiously at the tiny, chubby-cheeked, reddish baby with his wrinkled face.
Ethan wrinkled his nose. "He's... not very cute."
Nathan glared at him. "What are you talking about? He's beautiful!"
"He looks like a wrinkly little monkey," Ethan remarked.
Ashley playfully punched Ethan's chest. "You can't say things like that! It's a good thing Nathan's your friend, or he'd have decked you for insulting his baby."
Ethan shrugged. "I'm just being honest. When we have our baby, it'll definitely be gorgeous."
Nathan shot him an irritated look.
Ashley laughed. "Keep talking like that and Nathan will end your friendship. All newborns look like this at first—they get cuter as they grow. What would a man know about these things anyway?"
