Chapter 481 The Villain Was Played by Nate

Nate refused, "No candy for me, thank you. My mommy and teachers say too much sugar causes cavities."

Marc hadn't expected this response. A flash of malice crossed his eyes, which Nate immediately caught.

'This creep must be trying to kidnap me,' Nate thought.

Marc wore a hat and mask, revealing only a pair of sinister eyes. "Little buddy, I've got other treats in my bag. Take a look and see what you'd like."

Nate raised an eyebrow. "What do you have?"

Marc took off his backpack. "Look—chips, fries, peanuts, all kinds of cookies..."

Nate pretended to be curious, peering at the bag from a safe distance. "Mommy says those are junk food. They give you tummy aches."

Marc paused. "I have toys too. Want one? Come over and take your pick."

Nate kept his distance. "What kind of toys? Let me see."

Marc had only one toy in his backpack. "Don't you like it? Come over here and take it."

Growing impatient, Marc started to approach, ready to grab Nate. Just then, Andrei and another man walked out of the restroom, glanced at them briefly without much interest, and left.

Sensing Marc's intentions, Nate said, "Sir, I'm hungry. I ordered some barbecue but don't have money to pay."

"Is that so?" Marc smiled. "I'll pay for you. Then you can come to my place to eat. How's that?"

Nate subtly raised an eyebrow. "Okay!"

They maintained a distance of about three feet, with Nate walking ahead. When they reached the barbecue stand, he exchanged a look with Andy, who followed his gaze to the suspicious man trailing behind.

"Sir, what I ordered isn't enough. Can I get more?"

"Sure."

'Perfect!' Nate deliberately chose the most expensive items, while Marc watched with growing frustration.

The vendor said, "That'll be $300 total."

Marc grudgingly paid, gritting his teeth.

Once everything was packed up, Nate carried the bulging bags. Marc said, "Now, be a good boy and follow me."

"Sure thing!"

He obediently followed Marc, who thought his plan was succeeding.

However, just as they stepped outside, a taxi pulled up. Andy opened the door and called, "Nate, get in!"

Nate sprinted to the car and slammed the door shut. As the driver sped away, Nate lowered the window and called out, "Thanks for the barbecue! I've already called the police about your kidnapping attempt. Bye-bye!"

"Damn it!" Marc started to chase them, but suddenly police sirens wailed in the distance. His internal alarm went off—he was already a fugitive, and being caught by police would be disastrous. Marc bolted to his car and drove away with police in pursuit.

As he drove, Marc pounded the steering wheel in frustration. "Damn it! After decades of being clever, I get outsmarted by a kid! If I ever get the chance, you're finished!"

Meanwhile, Nate grinned at his bounty of food.

Andy scolded him, "That was dangerous, Nate! Next time you see a bad guy, just run away. Not every criminal is that easy to fool."

"I know," Nate replied. "But this one was so stupid—I played him like a fiddle."

"How are we going to eat all this barbecue?"

"We'll figure it out when we get back."

When Atticus went downstairs for water and checked on the boys, he discovered their empty room.

"Andy! Nate!" he shouted. "Where have you gone?"

Just as he was grabbing his keys to search for them, the boys walked through the front door.

"Godfather!"

"It's late—you shouldn't be wandering around without an adult. It's dangerous out there."

Andy shrugged. "Nate was hungry, so we took a taxi to get some barbecue."

Only then did Atticus notice each boy carrying two bags filled with food.

"That's so much!" he exclaimed, helping them with the bags. "This must have cost hundreds of dollars. Your daily allowance is only twenty dollars—how could you afford all this?"

"There was a special discount," Nate explained smoothly. "Plus, we've been saving up for a while."

Both children lied with remarkable composure. If Ashley knew the truth, she would certainly give them a serious lecture.

"Godfather, let's eat together."

"Alright."

As the three sat at the table enjoying the food, Andy casually asked, "Godfather, do you know what misunderstanding happened between Mommy and Daddy? Why did they suddenly separate back then?"
