Chapter 187 The Harsh Reality

While Catherine and George were chatting, they suddenly heard a noise from the bushes. They instantly got on high alert.

Catherine's eyes turned icy as she slowly approached the source of the sound.

Hiding in the corner, Ivy covered her mouth, cold sweat on her forehead. Just as she was panicking...

A wild cat jumped out, glanced at Catherine and George, meowed, and ran off.

"Mom, it was just a cat."

"It scared me to death. I thought someone was eavesdropping!"

Catherine patted her chest. "George, let's head back."

"Okay."

After they left, Ivy peeked out and saw them drive away. She let out a huge sigh of relief, collapsing like a deflated balloon.

Wiping the sweat from her forehead, Ivy muttered, "What's Catherine's beef with the Yates family? Why talk about revenge? How come I don't know about this?"

She pondered for a long time but couldn't figure it out.

Finally, she clicked her tongue. "I'm not the Yates family's daughter-in-law anymore. Whether that old man is dead or alive, I don't care. Let them deal with it."

Her phone vibrated again. Ivy's face showed irritation as she answered, "Hello."

"Is this Mrs. Yates? Do you know Felicity?"

Ivy raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, what's up?"

"Ms. Zito was badly beaten and is lying at our doorstep. I heard she's close to you. Can you come get her?"

"Felicity got beaten up?" Ivy, usually cold-hearted, didn't want to get involved, but she needed Felicity to keep Ethan occupied.

"Yes."

"Give me the address. I'll come right away."

"Okay."

As she was about to leave, the phone rang again.

"I said I'm coming. Why keep calling..." Before she could finish, a stern voice interrupted.

"Watch your tone!"

"Dad..."

Ivy's previously arrogant voice softened instantly.

Her father, Lucas Xavier, asked, "Where are you now?"

"Dad, I'm at the Yates mansion."

Lucas said, "Ivy, you and James have been divorced for a while. Stop getting involved..."

Ivy said, "Dad, didn't you say to maintain contact? It might help the Xavier family business."

"That was before; things are different now. How much of your assets are still tied up with the Yates family? Pull them all out immediately. In business, the last thing you want is a losing deal!"

Ivy looked at the Yates Mansion and murmured, "Pull everything out now? Do I have to be that ruthless?"

"You can get involved with the Yates family all you want, but don't even think about dumping Ethan on the Xaviers when you can't handle it anymore. I won't give a damn what happens to you..."

The voice on the other end was harsh. Ivy felt numb; she'd long since lost any feelings.

Everyone wanted to climb up to high society, but who really knew how tough it was?

Ivy stared blankly at her phone, then clenched it tightly, looking at the Yates mansion. "Ethan, I'm sorry. I have to go back to the Xavier family. Even if the Yates family falls, I can still secretly give you some money. If I get kicked out of the Xavier family, I won't even have money to support you..."

She made another call, resolutely saying, "Pull all my assets out of the Yates mansion, right away..."

After hanging up, she murmured, "Ethan, don't blame me for being heartless. I'm doing this for your own good."

With that, she turned and left.

At the Yates mansion, Michael had just had a heart attack. After taking his medication, he finally calmed down. James, worried, said, "Dad, you're looking kind of rough. Maybe you should go to the hospital for a check-up."

Michael waved him off. "I know what's up with my body. I'm fine. Instead of worrying about my health, think of a way to help the Yates Group through this crisis."

Michael looked at him with disappointment.

James said helplessly, "Dad, you know I'm not cut out for this... If Jimmy were still here..."

Before he could finish, Michael raised his cane as if to hit him. "All you do is talk about Jimmy. He's been dead for years. Why do you keep bringing him up!"

"Dad, I'm sorry for making you sad again..."

Michael sighed, looking at his useless son, cursing him inwardly for being a coward. But thinking of his deceased son, his feelings were even more complicated.

Just as Michael was feeling a headache, the maid's voice came. "Mr. Michael Yates, a group of people suddenly arrived, saying they want to take away Ms. Xavier's assets from the Yates family."

"What?"

Before the words were out, a group of people barged into the Yates family living room, saying, "The items in these photos were all bought by Ms. Xavier. Take them all away now."

"Ivy Xavier!"

Michael gritted his teeth in anger, pounding the floor with his cane.

He roared, "Impressive! Take everything away. Don't leave a single thing. If anyone dares to bring Ivy back to the Yates family, I'll deal with them myself!"

Michael roared, his face red with anger, and his heart started to hurt again.

Clutching his chest in pain, his face contorted. James, worried, said, "What's wrong, Dad... Someone, call an ambulance..."
