Chapter 286 Nora Visits Ashley
The Next Day
Ethan noticed Ashley was still out cold. To keep an eye on her, he moved his office to the hospital and started working from there. Ashley, faking her coma, could hear him typing away, wanting to move but stuck.
Just when Ashley was about to lose hope, there was a knock on the door.
"Come in."
Nora walked in with a fruit basket, "Ethan, I heard Ashley's in the hospital, so I brought some fruit for her."
Seeing Nora, Ethan quickly put his papers aside, "Nora, you didn't come here alone, did you?"
Nora shook her head and pointed outside, "I came with Mommy."
At that moment, Yara finally walked in, looking awkward. "Hello, Mr. Yates. Nora insisted on seeing Mrs. Yates. Sorry for the trouble."
Ethan glanced at the bed and sighed, "It's okay. She's still in a coma."
Yara, holding Nora's hand, walked over to Ashley's side. Seeing her asleep, she looked worried, "Mr. Yates, I heard Mrs. Yates was in a car accident. Is it serious?"
Ethan replied, "Luckily, it's just minor injuries, but the wound on her back is pretty deep."
Nora asked, "Then why hasn't Ashley woken up yet?"
Ethan's face was full of concern, "The doc said we need to keep an eye on her for a few more days."
Yara said, "Mr. Yates, don't be too upset. Mrs. Yates will get better soon."
Yara said some comforting words, but Ethan barely listened, only responding coldly.
Yara looked at Ethan, like she had something to say but hesitated.
Seeing her expression, Ethan asked, "Ms. Lopez, is there something you want to say to me?"
Yara blushed and said, a bit embarrassed, "I didn't expect that after so many years, we'd meet again. It's really fate playing tricks on us. Mr. Yates, you probably don't remember my embarrassing moments, do you?"
Ethan frowned. "What moments?"
Yara sighed in relief, "It's good that you don't remember."
She felt lucky; it would be too embarrassing if he remembered.
Suddenly, Nora chimed in, "Ethan, I heard from Mommy's best friend that you were the guy Mommy had a crush on in school. She chased you, and everyone knew about it!"
Ashley, who was pretending to be in a coma, heard this and her eyelashes fluttered. She secretly clenched the bedspread, feeling very uncomfortable.
Yara exclaimed and covered Nora's mouth, "Nora, don't talk nonsense!"
Nora pushed her hand away, "I'm not talking nonsense!"
Ethan frowned, looking displeased, a cold glint in his eyes, "What are you trying to say by telling me this?"
Ethan's misunderstanding made Yara's cheeks burn with embarrassment. She didn't want to bring up the past, and now it was mentioned right in front of her, making her feel even more embarrassed.
Yara said, "Mr. Yates, don't get me wrong. I don't want to have any connection with you. Everyone knows how good your relationship with Mrs. Yates is. I sincerely wish you both the best."
Ethan snorted coldly, "Thanks, but I don't need your blessings!"
Yara fell silent.
She had heard that Ethan was now a model husband who adored his wife. She thought he might have changed from his cold demeanor in college, but it turned out he was still the same, only gentle towards Ashley.
Nora leaned on the bed, looking at Ashley, and kissed her on the cheek, "Ashley, if you don't wake up soon, Ethan might be taken away by another woman."
Ashley remained silent.
Yara was embarrassed, "What nonsense are you talking about!"
Feeling extremely awkward, Yara held Nora's hand, "Mr. Yates, sorry for disturbing you. We'll come back to visit Mrs. Yates another day when she wakes up."
"Okay."
Nora pouted, seemingly reluctant to leave. Yara gave her a stern look, and she obediently said to Ethan, "Ethan, bye-bye."
Ethan gently patted Nora's head, "Good girl, see you next time."
Ethan tucked Ashley in and prepared to start working.
Suddenly, the door opened again.
Ethan was surprised, "Nora?"
Nora asked innocently, "Ethan, can I ask you for a favor?"
Ethan asked, "What favor?"
"Well," Nora said, "Our school has a parent-child activity, and all the other kids have dads, but I don't have."
Nora's voice grew smaller and filled with self-pity and sadness.
Seeing the little girl's sorrowful expression, Ethan felt a pang of sadness himself. He could guess what she was going to say next.
"Ethan, can you pretend to be my daddy?" Nora blinked her eyes, looking very hopeful and cute.
Ashley secretly opened her eyes, observing Ethan's reaction. She saw him sternly say, "No!"
Nora looked disappointed.
Nora started crying, "Why not?"
