Chapter 395 Ashley's Childhood
William's gaze turned distant as he recalled the past. "It was around when Ashley was ten. I was in Miren treating patients when I passed by the orphanage. I saw a group of children bullying a kid. I was about to leave when suddenly this fierce little girl charged over, positioned herself protectively in front of the victim, and threatened the bullies with remarkable intensity."
"She declared that anyone who dared hurt the child under her protection would answer to her," William continued with a fond smile. "It was quite amusing to watch—and that fierce little defender was Ashley!"
Ethan visualized the scene as William spoke, his heart aching at the thought of Ashley's difficult childhood. The entire White family listened intently, their emotions rising and falling with the story.
"What happened next?" Mia asked anxiously.
"There were about a dozen kids, all older than her," William explained. "I was certain she'd be overwhelmed—just two or three of them could have easily overpowered her."
Ethan's grip tightened around his coffee cup until his knuckles turned white. The entire family was on edge.
"But Ashley was clever," William continued. "She challenged their leader to a one-on-one confrontation and somehow managed to knock him down. When the others were about to gang up on her, the orphanage staff arrived, sending the bullies scattering."
Ethan exhaled with relief.
"What I didn't realize was that Ashley had alerted the staff beforehand," William said admiringly. "I watched her for several days after that. She repeatedly used her intelligence to avoid being bullied and even turned the tables on her tormentors. I was impressed. So I approached her and offered to teach her more skills. She took several days to consider before accepting."
By this point, Mia and John were holding each other tightly, tears streaming down their faces. Liam looked equally moved.
John suddenly knelt before William. "Thank you for taking her under your wing. Without your guidance, who knows how long the bullying would have continued."
"Don't mention it," William replied. "I was drawn to her intelligence and character." He leaned closer to examine John's eyes. "Your dementia seems to be improving."
"William," John said earnestly, "you're not just Ashley's mentor—you saved our family. We don't know how to repay you."
Ethan's expression grew serious. "William, I'd like to transfer 30% of Yates Group shares to you as thanks for helping Ashley become the exceptional person she is."
"What a perfect idea," Liam chimed in. "Dad, Mom, we should also give William 30% of White Group shares. I only own 25% myself, but if that's not enough, I'll transfer mine to him as well."
William, uncomfortable with the emotional display, grew agitated. "Enough!" he barked. "Yes, I helped Ashley, but our relationship was mutually beneficial. She gave me care and companionship in return. Stop this talk of shares, or I'll throw you all out. Besides, I don't understand business—what would I do with your shares?"
The family exchanged glances and stood up.
"We won't forget what you've done," Ethan said sincerely. "If you ever need anything, just ask—we'll do whatever we can to help."
William acknowledged this with a noncommittal grunt.
"By the way," Ethan ventured, "what is Ashley studying during her retreat?"
"She asked me not to tell you, but I think you should know—she's studying medicine."
"Medicine?" Ethan was surprised. He worried briefly about Ashley starting medical training so late, but his concern quickly gave way to pride.
"I know she'll become an excellent doctor," Ethan said, his face glowing with happiness.
"Not just excellent—she'll be top-tier," William corrected him.
"It's getting late," William observed. "Time for dinner."
Mia wiped her tears. "I'll prepare something right away. Have some more coffee—I'll be back soon."
As they sat down again, Ethan checked his watch anxiously. "William, may I see Ashley?"
"Absolutely not," William replied firmly.
Ethan checked the time again, clearly troubled.
"Do you have urgent business?" William asked.
Ethan nodded. "I need to go to Aurora—there's a matter I must handle personally."
The three-day deadline with the four business partners was tomorrow. Another pivotal moment was approaching.
