Chapter 580 The Truth Exposed

"What's wrong with your heart?" Ethan appeared to be guarding some secret.

Seeing this, Ashley frowned. "Ethan, are you hiding something from me?"

This was the second time in one day Ashley had heard something about his heart. Even she wasn't that naive. Yaakov had mentioned that only heart transplant patients required a six-month recovery period, and now this nurse—the moment "heart" was mentioned, Ethan shut it down. She strongly sensed something was being kept from her.

Isabella looked surprised. "Don't you know he had..."

"Shut up!" Ethan snapped, his face cold.

Ethan's eyes flashed with warning, as if he might lunge at her if she said another word. Isabella swallowed nervously.

"What's going on here?" Ashley pressed.

Ethan rubbed his temples. "Darling, I'm suddenly hungry. Could you get me some noodles from the shop downstairs?"

Ashley knew he was trying to get rid of her. Her eyes flickered. "Alright. You head back to your room first."

"Sure."

Ethan watched her leave. Isabella said, "Your Highness, does your wife not know about..."

Ethan waved dismissively, then noticed a shadow on the wall. He smiled slightly.

Meanwhile, Ashley was eavesdropping around the corner, unaware that the light was casting her shadow, betraying her presence.

"What's your name?" Ethan asked.

"Isabella."

"You were saying something about my heart?"

"Well..." Isabella noticed Ethan's dangerous look and the shadow on the wall. She swallowed hard. "The doctor said your wound nearly reached your heart. You were lucky it didn't."

"I see. So why are you approaching me? Love at first sight?"

"I..." Isabella stammered, looking down.

Having heard nothing revealing, Ashley left. Ethan, familiar with her footsteps, relaxed slightly when she was gone.

Seeing Isabella still hesitating, his eyes turned cold. "Speak!"

Isabella trembled. His presence was terrifying.

"Your heart... it belonged to my boyfriend," she finally said, her heart racing.

Ethan narrowed his eyes. "What did you say?"

"My boyfriend Robbie died in a car accident recently," Isabella explained, her eyes dimming. "Before he died, he donated his organs. His heart is now in your body."

"Your Highness, I swear I only joined the Discussion Group because I wanted this job. I have no designs on you!"

Ethan laughed coldly. "No wonder you keep staring at my chest. The way you look at me always feels odd."

"According to regulations, donor families aren't supposed to know where organs go. The fact that you know I have your boyfriend's heart means you've been investigating me. What's your real purpose?"

Isabella fell to her knees. "Your Highness, I have no ulterior motives! Robbie and I were about to get married. I could never betray him. Please believe me."

When speaking of Robbie, Isabella's expression grew determined. "I'll never love anyone but Robbie in this lifetime."

Ethan studied her with half-closed eyes, looking down at her.

Their gazes locked for a long time, neither yielding.

Finally, as his headache intensified, Ethan pressed his temples and looked away. "Fine. I'll believe you for now."

Isabella looked excited. "Thank you, Your Highness! So, can I return to the Discussion Group?"

"We'll discuss that later."

"By the way, does your wife know about your..."

"Mind your words. If you speak out of turn, you'll not only be banned from the Discussion Group, I'll make sure you have nowhere to turn."

"Understood."

Isabella witnessed Ethan's coldness firsthand. She had seen how gentle he was with Ashley, yet how harsh he could be with others. Clearly, he treated those he loved and didn't love differently.

While waiting for the food downstairs, Ashley searched online about post-heart surgery changes, committing everything to memory.

"Miss, your two orders of bread are ready."

"Thank you."

As Ashley returned with her phone, she passed the doctors' office and knocked. "Hello, I'm a family member of the patient in room 777. I have some questions."

"Please come in."

Ashley left the food on a chair outside and entered.

She asked, "Doctor, did my husband have a wound sutured or a heart transplant?"

The doctor asked, "Why do you ask?"

"I did some research online. Heart wound sutures typically heal within a month if no major vessels are damaged, but transplants require over six months of recovery. This aligns with my husband's situation. I suspect he had a transplant and that you're all hiding it from me."

The doctor adjusted his glasses, his eyes flickering momentarily. "You're overthinking. Your husband had a heart wound sutured, not a transplant."

"Really?" Ashley asked incredulously. "I haven't seen any of his surgical records. All the medication labels have been removed. I'm concerned for his safety—don't I have the right to see his medical records?"

"Of course."

The doctor retrieved a file. "Here are your husband's records, surgical information, and medications. Let me know if you have questions."

"Thank you."

Ashley reviewed everything carefully but found nothing suspicious. She returned the file. "I've finished. Sorry for my paranoia."

"It's understandable. We doctors understand family concerns."

"I won't take more of your time."

Ashley left but realized she'd forgotten the food. As she returned, she overheard the doctor on the phone.

The doctor had said, "Just as you predicted, she came questioning. Good thing you prepared the documents in advance. Judging by her reaction, she won't be suspicious anymore."

Ashley's eyes instantly filled with tears as the bread fell from her hands.
