Chapter 299 Heart-Wrenching Pain

Ashley glanced up and, oh snap, it was George!

Seeing George's eyes land on the paternity report, Ashley stuffed it into her bag, not even bothering to wipe her tears.

George was like, "Ashley, why you crying? Someone messed with you? Was it my bro? If it was, I'll totally set him straight for you!"

Ashley turned away, wiped her tears, and switched gears, "What brings you to the hospital?"

"A friend of mine took a nasty fall and got admitted to orthopedics. I'm here to check on her," George said, looking all worried. "You good?"

Ashley shook her head, "I'm fine. Can you keep this on the down-low for now?"

George gave her an OK sign, "Can I ask you a favor?"

Ashley looked puzzled, and George chuckled, "My friend needs someone to put on her meds, and it’s kinda awkward for a guy to do it. Think you could help? I'll get a nurse later."

Ashley was in no mood to help with anything.

George pleaded, "Ashley, come on, help me out. She’s got no one else in this city."

Feeling totally down, Ashley sighed, "Alright."

"Thanks, Ashley. You’re a lifesaver!" George grinned.

She grabbed the ointment and followed George to the hospital room.

Inside, a woman with bandages on her leg was struggling to get up. With her leg all messed up, she moved with difficulty.

George rushed over to help her, "Why are you moving around? Didn’t the doc say to rest?"

The woman had bandages on her leg and face, leaving just her eyes, nose, and mouth visible.

Ashley, feeling lost, looked at the woman. Those eyes seemed familiar, but she couldn’t place them. She just wanted to find a corner to cry in.

The woman asked, "Who’s this?"

"This is my sister-in-law, Ashley," George said. "Ashley, meet my friend, Annie Lacey."

For some reason, Ashley’s heart skipped a beat. Hearing her name made her think of Ava.

Ava, Annie, such similar names!

Ashley didn’t know if she was imagining it, but when she looked at Annie, she felt a weird sense of hatred in her eyes.

Annie smiled with her eyes, "Hey, Ms. Wilson, I’m Annie, George’s girlfriend."

Ashley's eyelids twitched, and she rubbed her head, thinking she was just imagining things.

"Hey, Annie." Hearing she was George’s girlfriend, Ashley totally let her guard down.

George said, annoyed, "Why are you talking nonsense!"

Annie said, "Ashley, don’t sweat it. He’s just being a drama queen."

Ashley, with a blank look, replied, "It’s cool."

Both of them could tell something was off with her, making things kinda awkward.

"Ashley, could you help me with the medicine?" Annie asked.

"Sure." Ashley, feeling out of it, mechanically opened the medicine bottle and started applying it to Annie, but totally forgot to take off the bandages first.

"Ashley, my bandages are still on. You’re getting the medicine all over them!" Annie said.

Ashley looked down and saw the whole bottle of medicine had spilled on the bandages and the bed sheets.

Ashley gave a bitter smile, "Sorry, I can’t do this. I gotta go!"

She put down the medicine bottle and bolted out, covering her face, not caring about their reactions.

In the hospital room

Annie and George were deep in thought.

A nasty glint flashed in Annie’s eyes, "I never thought I’d see her so messed up. What’s her deal? Ethan isn’t dead!"

"Keep it down!" George warned, looking around the hallway. Seeing no one, he closed the door. "I saw her stash a paternity report in her bag earlier, and then she got all upset."

"Paternity report?" Their eyes widened in surprise, "Could it be..."

Ashley ran out of the hospital room and found a quiet corner where she cried her heart out.

Her heart felt like it was being stabbed over and over, bleeding and in agony!

She clutched her chest, gasping for breath, her face twisted in sorrow, looking utterly pitiful!

Luckily, there was no one in the secluded corner of the hospital’s backyard, so she could cry freely!

She didn’t know how long she had been crying, but just as she thought she might pass out, Liam’s call came through, "Ashley, it’s time to come home for dinner. Where are you? I’ll come get you."

Ashley snapped back to reality, realizing she had been crying in the corner for hours!

Forcing herself to calm down, she said, "I’m at the hospital. How long will it take you to get here?"

"See you in an hour!" Liam said.

This was Ashley’s first official visit to the White family, super important. She couldn’t let anything mess it up!

She wiped her tears, forced herself to calm down, tidied up her appearance, and went to a nearby store to pick out some gifts.

An hour later, Liam’s car pulled up near the hospital. Ashley waved at him, holding a gift bag in each hand!
