Chapter 388 The Fool Who Spent Half a Million Dollars on Cotton Candy
Ashley eyed Ethan cautiously. Seeing him still asleep, she tiptoed out to the hallway to continue her phone call.
"Yaakov, what do you think a doctor's duty is?" Ashley countered when faced with his question.
"To save lives," Yaakov replied without hesitation.
"And if there's a medicine that could free people from suffering—would that be good or bad?" Ashley pressed.
Yaakov paused. "Good, of course."
"Exactly," Ashley said. "While Panacea is secret, and its effects go far beyond treating terminal illnesses, wouldn't it be a shame to keep something so beneficial off the market?"
She paused before continuing, "Besides, isn't it more heartbreaking to hide a life-saving medicine until it's lost to time, with no one ever knowing it existed?"
After a long silence, Yaakov finally spoke. "You're not wrong, but will William agree?"
Ashley's eyes darkened. "I admit I acted impulsively. I'm in town now and will explain everything to William later."
"Fine," Yaakov sighed. "No one can stop you once you've made up your mind. But those online comments infuriate me—calling our treasure a fake. Such ignorant people!"
Ashley smiled. "Don't worry about that. Once William agrees, I'll simplify the Panacea formula so it can help more people."
"All right then. I should go," Yaakov said.
"Goodbye."
As Ashley ended the call and turned around, she found Ethan standing behind her, watching quietly.
"Honey!" she gasped. "How long have you been standing there?"
Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Who were you talking to? Why all the secrecy?"
Ashley's heart raced as cold sweat formed on her forehead. "Did you hear what I was saying?"
Had Ethan discovered she was the "Evil Spirit"?
"I just walked up," Ethan said. "Heard something about 'Panacea.' What's that?"
Ashley studied his face intently, trying to determine if he was lying.
Ethan met her gaze steadily. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Sensing he had only caught the tail end of the conversation, Ashley relaxed. "I was just thinking how handsome you look in that outfit."
"So I'm not handsome other days?" Ethan teased, raising an eyebrow.
Ashley laughed, taking his arm. "You're always handsome—the most handsome man ever!"
Ethan grinned. "Let's go shopping."
As they walked hand in hand, Ashley discreetly observed Ethan several times, relieved to find no signs of suspicion.
They arrived at the town's market street, lined with vendors selling various goods.
"What's that?" Ethan asked, pointing.
He was watching a vendor scoop sugar into a machine that produced thread-like strands, which the vendor then gathered onto a stick.
"You've never had cotton candy?" Ashley asked, surprised.
"Cotton candy?"
"Yes. The vendor can shape it however you want."
"Really?"
Intrigued, Ethan approached the vendor. "Sir, can you make one that looks like her?" he asked, pointing at Ashley.
Ashley was taken aback, blushing as the vendor gave them a knowing smile.
"You young lovebirds and your romantic gestures," the vendor chuckled. "I can try, but it'll cost extra."
Ethan nodded solemnly and held up five fingers. "Is this enough?"
The vendor looked confused. "Five dollars?"
Before the vendor could agree, Ethan clarified, "Five hundred thousand dollars."
This statement drew a crowd, with onlookers regarding Ethan as if he were crazy.
"Everyone, look! We have a millionaire who wants to spend half a million on cotton candy!" someone called out.
The vendor laughed. "You're joking, right sir?"
Ethan frowned in confusion at the pointing and staring crowd. He had made a sincere offer. Why was everyone looking at him like that?
"I..." he began.
Ashley snapped out of her shock and quickly intervened. "I'm so sorry," she said to the vendor with an embarrassed smile. "My husband has... issues. He meant five dollars. Can you make one of me and one of him for five?"
When Ethan had offered $500,000 for cotton candy, Ashley had been too stunned to react immediately. Thank goodness she'd stopped him in time.
It was just sugar, after all. Spending half a million on it? He really was clueless!
Hearing Ashley describe him as having "issues," Ethan narrowed his eyes, a dangerous glint flashing across them.
"I thought so," the vendor laughed. "A crazy one, huh? Five dollars it is. I'll make them right away."
The crowd grew more animated, with people pointing and commenting, "What a beautiful lady, married to someone so dense. At least he's good-looking!"
