Chapter 579 Coveting Him?
"Yaakov, you can't seriously think someone of my position would agree to be your lab rat!"
"That's not what I meant," Yaakov explained. "If you want to recover your memories quickly, you could try my medication. Based on my years of research experience, I'm confident it won't cause problems."
"Contact me after your drug has gone through multiple clinical trials," Ethan replied firmly. "It's not that I doubt your abilities, but I'm not in any rush. Ashley and I are together now."
Though they had both lost their memories of their past together, it didn't affect their current relationship. Why risk taking an untested drug?
Yaakov nodded. "I'll contact you first when my clinical trials show results."
"Good." Ethan activated his wheelchair and left.
When he returned, Ashley asked, "Darling, you're back. What were you and Yaakov discussing for so long?"
"You're already worried about me after such a short time? Starting to interrogate me? He's a man—what are you concerned about?"
Ashley rolled her eyes. "Where is your mind going? I was just curious. If you don't want to tell me, fine."
"Don't be upset. I'll tell you," Ethan said, putting his arm around her when she turned away angrily. He repeated his conversation with Yaakov, carefully omitting any mention of his heart transplant.
"Yaakov developed a drug that can restore memories?!" Ashley exclaimed.
"Yes."
"Darling, don't you want to recover our previous memories?"
"Of course I do, but we're together now. Who knows, maybe we'll gradually remember things without his drug. Besides, what if there are side effects? It's better to be cautious about medication."
"You have a point."
By then, they had arrived at the hospital entrance.
"We're here. Let me help you back to your room," Ashley offered.
"Thank you."
They got out of the car, and Ashley helped Ethan into his wheelchair and pushed him toward his room.
Meanwhile, Isabella was waiting anxiously outside the empty hospital room. Her face brightened when she saw Ashley and Ethan approaching.
"Ms. White, you're finally back! Why didn't you wait for me this afternoon? I told you I needed to speak with you."
Ashley suddenly remembered. "I'm sorry. I had an urgent matter to attend to. You can tell me now."
Isabella glanced at Ethan, her eyes lingering on his chest with a complex expression.
Ethan felt uncomfortable under her gaze. "Get to the point."
"Since you're both here, I'll explain everything clearly," Isabella said. "Ms. White, about what happened at the café today—I didn't post that video online. It was a server at the café. After investigation, that employee apologized and was fired. I wanted to tell you not to misunderstand me. I have no reason to hurt you."
"As for the other rumors about you, I believe you're not the person they claim you are." Isabella looked between them. Seeing them still so affectionate after such a scandal proved Ethan trusted Ashley completely, and the online rumors must be false.
Isabella's words made Ethan see her in a new light.
Ashley smiled. "We haven't known each other long. How can you be sure I'm not the person described online? What if I am?"
Isabella looked at Ethan. "I've heard His Highness Prince Totti is exceptionally talented. If he is truly as brilliant as they say, then either he is poor at judging people and was deceived by you, or you are more astute and fooled him."
Ethan's face hardened. "Did your father tell you about my identity?"
Isabella's eyes flickered. "No, I happened to overhear your conversation when passing by your room."
"Is that so?" Ethan regarded her with skepticism, his penetrating gaze seeming to see right through her.
Isabella, intimidated by his powerful presence, quickly changed the subject. "Ms. White, I've explained everything. Please don't misunderstand or be prejudiced against me."
"I understand what you're saying," Ashley replied. "I believe you're not the one spreading rumors, but I don't understand what you mean by me targeting you. When have I ever done that?"
"Today, we both applied for positions. I don't know if you received an acceptance, but I did. However, before I could report for duty, I received another notice claiming there had been a clerical error and that I hadn't actually passed the interview. How is that possible? The application number and information were identical—it couldn't have been a mistake unless..."
Isabella fixed Ashley with a sharp gaze. "Unless you said something to him, and he helped you by having my position revoked! Ms. White, you thought I was behind the online rumors, so you deliberately targeted me, right? This is all a misunderstanding. Please show mercy!"
"Your logic sounds reasonable, but I had nothing to do with your position being revoked," Ashley explained. "This afternoon, my friend had an accident. I was overwhelmed and had no time to say anything negative about you to Ethan! If you're unhappy about losing your position, take it up with the relevant staff. Don't falsely accuse me!"
Isabella asked, "Are you saying you didn't do this?"
"Of course not!"
Ashley's expression was resolute, her eyes unwavering. Seeing this, Isabella found herself believing her.
Isabella paled, staggering slightly. "Then who did it?"
"Stop guessing," Ethan, who had been silent until now, spoke up. "I ordered it done."
Both Ashley and Isabella looked at him in shock.
Isabella angrily protested, "Your Highness, by what right do you destroy my hard work with a single word?"
Ethan replied nonchalantly, "I don't know how hard you've worked, but the way you look at me makes me uncomfortable. I don't want to work with a woman who covets me, so forget about joining the Discussion Group."
Ashley was surprised. Was that really the reason? Had this nurse fallen for Ethan at first sight?
Isabella, misunderstood, flushed with embarrassment and anger. "That's absurd! I'm not coveting you... I worked hard to join the Discussion Group because I genuinely need this job, and because of your heart..."
Before she could finish, Ethan, sensing what she was about to reveal, cut her off sharply, "Shut up!"
