Chapter 272 Ashley Found out the Real Story

Caleb, all jittery, blurted out, "Doc, how's my girl doing?"

Ethan glanced at the pale figure on the hospital bed, his emotions all tangled up. He couldn't make sense of the weird feelings swirling inside him.

"She's been brought back, but she's still in the danger zone. Gotta keep an eye on her in the ICU," the doctor said. "She needs rest now, so no visits for a bit. Come back when she's more stable."

With that, the docs wheeled her into the ICU.

The crew gathered outside the ward. Through the glass, they saw Doris all bandaged up, with a cast on her foot and a respirator on her face. She looked rough.

Seeing this, Ethan felt a storm of emotions.

This woman he'd hated since forever had just risked her life to save him. He felt a rush of strange feelings. If this was all part of her plan, she sure went all out.

Caleb stared through the glass, wiped his tears, and sighed, "Oh, this silly kid."

Autumn chimed in, "Dad, she's always had a knack for getting through stuff. She'll pull through and come out stronger. Don't be sad."

Ethan cleared his throat, "Ms. Doris Jones saved my life, and I'll make it up to her."

The two turned to look at him, their eyes full of mixed emotions. Doris tried to say something, but Caleb held her back and said, "Mr. Yates, no need for compensation. As long as the Yates family is around, my daughter will always have bad luck. You should leave now!"

Ethan had never been treated like this before, and his face turned red with anger.

He grabbed Ashley and said coldly, "Goodbye!"

The Jones family was always playing the blame game. It was Doris who messed with his dad, wrecking his parents' marriage, and now they blamed the Yates family!

Ashley walked a few steps with him and asked, "Babe, you mad?"

Ethan fumed, "I don't understand the Jones family. They approached me about working together, then played the victim and gave us a hard time. They're like actors, constantly changing their faces."

Ashley tried to soothe him, "The Jones family knows Doris ended up in the ICU saving you, so they're not gonna be nice. Don't be mad. We'll visit and thank Ms. Doris Jones when she wakes up."

After leaving the hospital, Ethan's mood started to lift. Listening to Ashley, Ethan nodded. "Alright."

A spark flashed in Ashley's eyes. "Oh, I left something at the nurse's station. Wait for me in the car, I'll be right back."

"Okay." Ethan didn't think much of it and waited in the car for Ashley.

Ashley made her way back to the ICU, ready to chat with the Jones family, when she caught a snippet of their conversation.

Autumn was saying, "Dad, good thing you stopped me, or I would've screamed."

"Shut it!" Caleb hissed, glancing around nervously. "Too many ears here. Don't talk nonsense."

"Sorry, Dad," Autumn mumbled.

"Your sister doesn't know the truth, but she risked her life to save him when it mattered. Enough talk. The ICU's off-limits for visitors. Hanging around here is pointless. Let's head back," Caleb said.

Just as they were about to leave, they spotted Ashley lurking around the corner. They froze, exchanging worried glances, unsure if she'd overheard them.

Ashley flashed a smile and said, "Mr. Jones, Ms. Jones, can we talk?"

The air got thick with tension.

The three of them found a nearby bench to sit on.

Ashley started, "I checked out the accident footage. It's obvious Doris acted on instinct to save Ethan, but he's misinterpreting the situation. He thinks she planned the whole thing! I think we need to clear this up."

She continued, "You guys know the history better than anyone. I want to get through to Ethan so he doesn't hold this grudge against Doris."

Caleb sighed, looking defeated. "They've been tangled up in this mess for most of their lives, and it's still not over. Ms. Wilson, I'm not trying to change Mr. Yates' mind about my daughter. Just laying out the facts."

Caleb went on, "Back then, our family was small and constantly under the Xavier family's thumb. People said Doris was chasing after James Yates, but it was James who wouldn't leave her alone. Ivy was hell-bent on having James and made life miserable for Doris and our family."

Ashley’s jaw dropped.

She hadn't expected this twist.

The real villain was Ivy!

Ashley was stunned, "So, my father-in-law and Doris were in love back then?"

And it was Ivy stirring the pot?

Caleb sighed again, "They’re old now, living their own lives. Digging this up now is pointless."

"I just want people to stop misunderstanding Doris! Ivy trashed her reputation, even hired someone to assault her, and locked her up. I hate that we were too weak back then to fight back against the Xavier family," Caleb choked up.

He continued, "But now, our family's stronger, and we're not scared of the Xavier family anymore. Go back and tell Ivy, if she messes with my daughter again, she'll regret it!"
