Chapter 581 Be Good to Him in Every Detail
"Darling, what took you so long? Let me take those for you," Ethan said, approaching Ashley as she entered the hospital room carrying two fresh bags of bread.
"I've got it," Ashley replied stiffly, subtly shifting away from his helpful gesture.
Ethan furrowed his brow, sensing something was off. He couldn't quite pinpoint what felt strange about Ashley's demeanor.
Noticing his concern, Ashley flashed a sweet smile, masking her complicated emotions. "Sweetheart, these just came out of the oven. They're very hot—I didn't want you to burn yourself."
Ethan relaxed. "A little heat won't hurt me. You be careful too."
After Isabella's mention of his heart, Ethan knew Ashley would be suspicious and might question the doctors. That was why he had offered the doctor a substantial incentive to conceal the truth about his heart transplant.
Ethan carefully observed Ashley's mood while she met his searching gaze with a smile. "Darling, I bought enough for both of us. Let's eat together."
"Sounds good."
They sat at the table together. Ashley waited for the bread to cool slightly before offering it to Ethan's lips. "Careful, honey, eat slowly. It might still be hot."
Ethan smiled warmly. Being cared for so attentively by the woman he loved made the bread taste exceptionally soft and sweet.
"Don't just feed me—you should eat too."
"I'm not in a hurry. You first."
When Ethan noticed her portion was nearly gone, he said, "Darling, eat yours first."
Ashley shook her head. "I'm not very hungry. Yours is almost finished—let me feed you the rest."
Ethan gazed at her adoringly, but something still felt off. She had always been kind to him, but not quite like this. It felt as though she was deliberately catering to his every need.
"Sweetheart, if you keep being this nice to me, my hands will forget how to work," Ethan joked, taking her bread and holding it to her lips. "If you feed me, I should feed you too. Eat up."
Ashley stared at the bread pressed against her lips. Her mouth trembled slightly, her long curled eyelashes hiding the tears welling in her eyes. She took a small bite.
"Is it good?"
Ashley kept her head down, saying nothing.
Unable to read her thoughts, Ethan said, "Darling, yours has gone cold. It probably doesn't taste good anymore. Have mine instead."
He swapped their portions. "My piece is smaller. If you're still hungry afterward, I'll order more."
He held the bread to her lips. "Try this—isn't it better?"
Ashley, still looking down, took the food he offered. After a few chews, she began to sob.
"Darling, what's wrong?"
Alarmed, Ethan set down the bread and cupped her face in his hands. When she finally looked up, he saw her face was streaked with tears. Her eyes held a complex mix of emotions—pain, fear, and tenderness.
"What's happened? Did I do something wrong? Did I hurt you?"
He gently wiped away her tears, filled with remorse while secretly wondering if she had discovered the truth about his surgery.
Ashley sniffled and smiled through her tears. "Don't worry, I'm just overwhelmed. Being fed bread by you... these are tears of happiness. If people knew a prince was feeding his wife bread, you'd be named the world's best husband, and I'd be the most envied woman alive."
Ethan pulled her into his arms. "Silly girl, why think about such things? You're my wife—it's only right that I treat you well."
From where Ethan couldn't see, Ashley's face crumpled in anguish. She covered her mouth as tears streamed down her flushed face. Her chest heaved with silent sobs as she bit down hard to prevent any sound from escaping.
"Darling, do you want more?"Not wanting him to see her like this, Ashley wrapped her arms around his waist, clinging to him as if desperate for his embrace. "Sweetheart, can I just stay in your arms for a while?"
"Of course." Ethan stroked her back lovingly. "You can stay in my arms forever if you want."
Ashley broke into a smile that looked more pained than her tears.
If she hadn't forgotten the bread she'd bought earlier and gone back for it, she would never have overheard the doctor's phone conversation with Ethan. Only then did she learn that Ethan had undergone a heart transplant, hiding the enormous risk from everyone.
He had shouldered such a burden all alone. He was truly mad!
After learning the truth, Ashley had wrestled with her thoughts before deciding not to confront him. Instead, she would care for him meticulously, giving him everything he wanted.
Having made this decision, she still occasionally showed flashes of her usual temperament when facing Ethan. She had almost revealed her knowledge earlier but managed to cover it up. Now, with her face hidden from him, she couldn't let her emotions show and burden him further.
Ashley composed herself, wiped away her tears, and pulled away from Ethan's embrace.
She exclaimed, "Oh no, the bread's completely cold now!"
"It's fine," Ethan said indulgently. "We shouldn't waste food, even if it's cold. I'll eat this and order fresh bread for you."
Ashley couldn't bear the thought of him eating cold bread alone. "I'm not that picky. The food is still good—I'll share it with you."
"Alright then."
They continued feeding each other, exchanging looks filled with affection and tenderness. When only one bite remained, Ashley fed it to Ethan. As he took it, he suddenly wrapped his arm around her waist and leaned down to kiss her.
In that moment, they felt a profound sense of happiness and contentment.
She truly hoped they could remain this happy forever.
