Chapter 206 Ethan's Guilt

Ferndale.

Ethan and Ashley had been super close lately, making everyone around them a bit jealous.

Today, Ethan took Ashley to the hospital for a follow-up, and the doctor said she could finally get her cast off.

Ashley was thrilled.

Ethan stayed with her the whole time during the cast removal. The doctor recommended rehab, and even though Ethan was swamped, he always made time for her sessions.

After three months in a cast, Ashley moved slowly. But with Ethan by her side, the pain was bearable, even sweet.

"Ashley, let's take a break and continue later," Ethan suggested, seeing her drenched in sweat.

"Okay," Ashley agreed.

Ethan helped her to a nearby bench. Just then, his phone rang. It was Diannel. He hung up without a second thought.

"Ethan, if you need to handle something at work, go ahead," Ashley said.

"It's fine. I promised to spend two hours with you for rehab. I won't break that promise."

He pulled out a handkerchief and gently wiped her sweat.

Ashley smiled, her eyes sparkling with admiration. "Ethan, it's so good to have you around," she said, though her eyes dimmed for a moment. She wished they could have a child.

"Drink some water," Ethan said.

"Okay."

Ashley took the cup, her fingers trembling. She tried to hide her discomfort, but her wrist hurt so much she was sweating.

"Why are you sweating so much?" Ethan asked, puzzled. "We've been resting for a while."

Ashley's eyes flickered. "Ethan, I want something to eat. Can you get it for me?"

"Sure, sit tight," he said, patting her head before heading off.

As soon as he left, Ashley's smile vanished, replaced by pain. She reached for a water bottle, but her hand shook uncontrollably. She bit her lip, trying to grab it, but the pain was too much. The bottle fell to the ground.

Ashley clutched her wrist, eyes filled with pain.

Ethan was on his way back with food when some local women recognized him. "It's him!" they gasped.

"Isn't he the guy from the news?"

A blonde woman blocked his path. "Sir, you're the luckiest man alive. Your wife is amazing."

She showed him a news article on her phone. "Is this your wife? She was fixing shoes at the palace gates with a cast on. Is she okay?"

Ethan looked at the video, emotions swirling—shock, anger, heartache, sadness. "Ashley..." he murmured, handing the phone back. "Thank you."

He ran back to find Ashley.

Ashley, trying to avoid reality, attempted to pick up other items. But her hand trembled and hurt with every effort. Frustrated, she swept everything off the table and broke down in tears.

Ethan stood behind her, heart aching, feeling guilty. He wanted to comfort her but couldn't find the words.

Today, Ethan felt like a coward. Unable to face his own discomfort, he turned and walked away.
