Chapter 297 Grandfather and Aunt
Ethan and Ashley bailed on the press conference.
They hopped in the car, Ethan behind the wheel, and Ashley just watching him, all quiet-like.
Ashley, kinda nervous, asked, "Babe, you mad at me for not telling Doris she's your mom ahead of time?"
She quickly added, "I was just worried you'd freak out, so I thought I'd wait a bit... I never meant to keep it from you."
Ethan, one hand on the wheel, ruffled her hair with the other and said, "Chill, babe. How could I be mad at you?"
Ashley pulled a document from her bag, "Babe, this is the paternity test for you and Doris!"
Ethan pulled over and flipped through the papers; [Ethan, Doris, Paternity Relationship, Confirmed!]
Ethan bought it!
His eyes darkened for a sec, then he turned the car around, heading somewhere else.
Ashley asked, "Where we going?"
Ethan's eyes were serious, "The hospital."
Ashley got it; he was going to see Doris.
About half an hour later, they rolled up to the hospital.
ICU Ward
Doris was still out cold.
"Doc," Ethan flagged down a passing doctor, "How's she doing?"
"She's out of the woods and can be moved to a regular ward soon," the doctor said.
Ethan let out a big sigh of relief.
Looking at Doris, Ethan's face was a mix of emotions. Ashley knew he was probably lost in thought about the past, so she squeezed his hand to comfort him.
Ethan remembered the car accident when Doris risked her life to save him. His heart ached a bit. He'd misunderstood her at first, but things had changed so much. Thinking about her being in danger made him feel super guilty.
Now, hearing she was out of danger, he sighed in relief, his mood all over the place...
Just then
Caleb and Autumn showed up in the hallway and spotted Ethan and Ashley. They exchanged looks.
Caleb said, "Ethan... can I call you that?"
Ethan glanced at him. He always had this cold vibe, and that look made him seem even more distant.
Caleb thought he'd get shut down and was about to leave, scratching his nose.
Ethan's voice came, "Grandpa, of course you can."
Ashley, standing beside him, bowed slightly, "Hello, Grandpa."
Caleb's heart raced, looking a bit excited, "Hello..."
Autumn waved, "Hey, Ethan, I'm Autumn, your aunt!"
Ethan nodded slightly, "Aunt."
Ashley also greeted, "Hello, Aunt."
Autumn couldn't stop grinning, "Well done!"
She nudged Caleb with her elbow and whispered, "Dad, you should give them a welcome gift!"
Caleb's face changed.
Caleb scratched his head, "Ethan, Ashley, sorry, this was so sudden I didn't have time to get a gift. How about we grab lunch later?"
Ethan, usually cold, stayed indifferent to their excitement.
Seeing his reaction, Caleb was a bit puzzled, but Ashley smiled and said, "We'll take you up on that!"
Two doctors walked over, "Here to transfer the patient? Come help."
"Okay." Caleb followed the doctors, ready to help. Ethan said calmly, "I'll do it."
Caleb was stunned for a moment and stepped aside.
Ethan followed the doctors into the ward. Ashley watched as they packed up some equipment and pushed the bed out.
Caleb walked over to Ashley, looking worried, and asked, "Ashley, why does it seem like my grandson doesn't like us?"
Ashley smiled, "Grandpa, you got him wrong. He's just naturally cold. Once you get to know him, you'll see he's warm-hearted despite his cold exterior. If he didn't like you, he wouldn't have helped with the transfer."
"That makes sense!" Caleb nodded, "I thought he didn't like us. Ashley, what does he like to eat? Tell me so I can prepare."
Ashley said, "Okay, I'll make a list and send it to you."
Ashley took out her phone and started listing Ethan's favorite foods.
During this time, the bed had already been pushed out of the ward, and Caleb and Autumn followed.
Suddenly, Ashley's phone rang.
"Hello? Is this Ashley?"
"Yes," she replied.
"This is Haven Hospital. You left something in the ward when you checked out today. It's a paternity report. Could you come and pick it up?" a nurse said.
"Okay." Ashley hung up and remembered she had left in a hurry in the morning and hadn't checked for any left items, "Ethan, Grandpa, Aunt," Ashley said, "I left something in the ward. I'll go downstairs to get it."
Ethan nodded, "Okay, hurry back."
