Chapter 246 It Tastes Bitter
"I already know what I'm gonna give him, but last night kinda threw me off..." Ashley blushed and quickly switched gears, "Anyway, I'll wrap it up in the next couple of days and hand it to him myself."
"Last night, huh?" Sienna grinned, all knowing, "What juicy stuff went down between you two?"
"You're such a nosy parker! Always gotta know what's going on, huh?" Ashley shot back, "Finish chopping those veggies, I'll get started on the cooking."
"Alright, alright." Sienna was just messing with her. Seeing Ashley dodge the topic, she let it slide.
Ethan quietly slipped away.
He headed to the balcony. From there, he had a clear view of everyone in the garden, but his mind was elsewhere.
Time had flown by; they'd been hitched for a year already.
Ethan couldn't help but think back to when they first met, which made him smile without even realizing it.
He also thought about how sweet things got once they got serious, and he was totally lost in the joy of it all.
Ethan snapped back to reality and called Diannel, asking, "Hey, what's a good gift for a big occasion?"
Diannel checked the calendar and said, "Mr. Yates, you mean your first anniversary with Mrs. Yates? I was just about to remind you, but looks like you're on top of it."
"So, what should I get her?" Ethan asked.
"Well..." Diannel said, "The Lopez family is hosting a charity auction, and they sent an invite. Why not take Mrs. Yates and see if there's something she likes? You can bid on it for her."
"That's a solid idea," Ethan said, "but it's not enough. I promised Ashley another wedding. Gotta propose first, then get married..."
Ethan kept going on and on, giving Diannel detailed instructions, and Diannel was scribbling notes like crazy on the other end.
Diannel was sweating bullets. In all the time he'd known Mr. Yates, this was the first time he'd heard him talk so much, and he kept repeating himself, scared of any slip-ups.
"Basically, do it like I said..." Ethan had just finished when he heard Ashley's voice getting closer, "Honey, come eat."
"You got all that, right? No screw-ups." Ethan was worried Diannel might've missed something.
"Don't worry, Mr. Yates, I got it," Diannel replied.
He hung up just as Ashley walked over.
"Who were you talking to?" Ashley linked her arm with his.
Ethan said, "Just giving Diannel some work stuff. There's a charity auction tonight, and I want you to come with me. If you see something you like, don't even think twice, I'll get it for you."
"Okay." Ashley beamed, linking arms with Ethan as they strolled to the dining table together.
Seeing their lovey-dovey display, Sienna teased, "Are you two glued together or what? Always so sticky."
Ashley made a face, "Oh, please. You and Nathan are just as bad."
The dining room was filled with laughter.
Everyone sat down and started digging in. Some of the meat Ethan grilled was burnt, but Ashley, wanting to eat what he made, endured the bitterness and took a few bites.
"Honey, this meat is burnt, it's not good. Eat something else." Ethan picked out a few perfectly grilled pieces for her, but Nathan quickly snatched them away, saying, "I grilled these good ones. Honey, these are for you. You're eating for two, so you need more."
Ethan shot him a look.
The look in his eyes was a mix of reproach and resignation, enough to make most people sweat. But Nathan just shrugged it off.
Nathan laughed, "You burnt the meat yourself, and you still have the nerve to glare at me."
Sienna laughed heartily and handed Ashley a piece of grilled meat, "Ashley, let's share this."
Ashley said, "It doesn't matter. Ethan burnt the meat, and even though it tastes bitter, my heart feels sweet."
Sienna and Nathan looked at each other and said in unison, "I can't stand them."
Even though they found it overly sweet, their smiles were almost reaching outer space!
Ethan was a sucker for Ashley's sweet talk.
But how could he let Ashley eat burnt meat? He took the meat from her hand and said, "Even though I know you feel sweet, you can't eat this. If you get a stomachache, I'll be heartbroken."
Nathan and Sienna felt so out of place with this couple's sweetness that they felt like they were intruding.
"Honey, let me try your cooking," Ethan said.
"Okay, I'll get you some." Ashley smiled.
Nathan and Sienna exchanged a glance and quietly left with their child.
They decided not to disturb the couple's sweetness!
"So, how is it? Is it good?" Ashley asked.
Ashley only had eyes for Ethan and didn't notice that the others had already left.
Ethan chewed the food, his expression changing dramatically.
She was shocked, "What's wrong? Did I not cook it well?"
Seeing his changed expression, Ashley thought there was something wrong with her cooking and took another bite to taste, "I think it's good."
Ethan was shocked, "Honey, your cooking is even better than a five-star chef's."
