Chapter 149 Intimidation
Ethan leaned back in his chair, looking serious. "Let him in."
The director brought Matthias into the office. Upon seeing Ethan, a flicker of fear crossed Matthias's eyes, but he quickly suppressed it.
"Matthias, have a seat. I need to ask you something," Ethan said.
"Mr. Yates, what could you possibly need from me?"
"Relax," Ethan replied, raising an eyebrow. "Just answer honestly. I won't make it hard for you."
Matthias's eyes flickered. "Go ahead."
Ethan placed a photo of Felicity on the desk. "Do you know this person?"
Matthias shook his head quickly. "No, I don't."
"You're lying," Ethan said. "She came to the hospital two days ago, bribed you to alter her medical report, and confessed. No point in denying it."
Matthias's legs shook with fear. Felicity had just been with him at the hotel, asking him to cover for her. How could she have confessed already?
Realizing Ethan was bluffing, Matthias stammered, "I... I..."
Ethan's cold gaze made Matthias feel like he was on trial.
"Someone saw you take the money. You've been reported, and the evidence is solid. Still denying it?" Ethan sneered.
Matthias was terrified but remembered Felicity's desperate look and his promise to her. He gritted his teeth and said, "Mr. Yates, it's not what you think. Her brother is a gambler who often asks her for money. She asked me to hold it for her. I would never take money to do something unethical."
Ethan frowned. "You're a doctor. Are you sure everything you just said is true?"
Matthias swallowed hard. "Yes... it's true..."
Ethan smirked, holding the photo in front of Matthias. "Are you sure you don't know her and didn't take her money?"
"I don't know her..."
"Didn't you say you were managing her finances?"
"Sorry, I do know her... but not well. I was just managing her finances, but I definitely didn't alter her medical report."
"Oh~" Ethan dragged out the sound, raising an eyebrow. "So how much money did she ask you to hold? It was cash, right? Do you still have it?"
"Yes... about twenty thousand dollars, all in cash... but... I've used quite a bit."
Ethan beckoned. "Give it to me. I'll return it to her, and you'll clear yourself of the bribery charge."
Matthias was confused but didn't dare argue. "Okay, I'll get it."
He stood up, legs weak, and walked out trembling. Ethan watched him leave, sneering.
Ethan muttered, "Even though you refused to admit it, you still slipped up."
"You think I'd believe such a stupid excuse? Only if I were an idiot!"
'Felicity did bribe the doctor!'
Matthias didn't realize he had outsmarted himself.
It's hard to imagine a patient and doctor having such a deep bond that the patient would entrust the doctor with a large sum of money for safekeeping. And since it's for safekeeping, the doctor wouldn't dare touch it.
Yet Matthias blurted out that he had used quite a bit.
"Looks like it's time to teach the Zito family a lesson!"
