Chapter 40 Meeting with Kelsey
When Ethan heard the word "divorce," he frowned. He turned to make a call. Ashley noticed his troubled look, full of confusion.
"Ethan, you know the benefits better than anyone else. Marrying Ms. White will solidify the Yates family's status."
Ethan's voice was icy. "Mom, do you think everyone marries and divorces for benefits like you?"
Silence on the other end.
Ethan took a deep breath. "Don't contact me unless it's important."
He hung up and leaned against the wall, rubbing his temples in frustration.
Ashley saw his weary face, sensing his loneliness.
Her heart ached a bit.
She stepped forward. "Ethan, what's wrong?"
He looked out of sorts.
Ethan wanted to confide but couldn't. He gave a self-mocking smile. Who could understand his pain?
He stayed silent.
Ashley had never seen him so down. She hugged him. "Ethan, if something's bothering you, tell me. Maybe I can help."
Ethan replied, "You can't help me."
"How do you know if you don't tell me? I..."
Ethan pulled her into his embrace, holding her tightly.
He buried his chin on her shoulder, his warm breath tickling her neck and making her heart flutter.
"Ethan..."
"Shh, don't talk. Let me rest against you for a while."
At that moment, Ethan seemed less burdened and more lonely and broken.
Ashley blinked. They were so close she could almost hear his heartbeat.
Samantha came to talk to Ashley but found them embracing in the hallway. The sunlight outlined their figures in gold, creating a beautiful scene.
Samantha instinctively took out her phone and snapped a few pictures.
"Achoo!"
Ethan sneezed, and they quickly separated, flustered.
Ethan, who had looked so depressed, immediately put on a cold expression when he saw someone else.
He cleared his throat. "If you're ready, let's go. Kelsey's waiting for us in the conference room."
Ethan directed his words at Samantha, who nodded. "Mr. Yates, I'll just have a word with Mrs. Yates and then join you."
Ethan walked away.
Samantha approached Ashley. "Ashley, Pauline told me you two have a contract marriage, but from what I just saw, are you two planning to turn it into a real one?"
"No, I don't even like him."
Ashley’s eyes flickered, and her voice carried a hint of guilt she didn’t notice.
"Why don't I believe you? But we'll discuss this later. You let me use your name to sign with the Yates Group, and now they’ve sent me to Ferndale on a business trip. They didn’t say I'd have to meet Kelsey. Oh my God, if I get exposed, it'll be so embarrassing."
Ashley just wanted to keep her other identity hidden. She didn’t expect the Yates Group to bring the designer along to Ferndale.
They’d have to take it one step at a time.
"Don't panic. Watch for my signals. If you say something wrong, I'll cover for you."
As the saying goes, one lie requires countless lies to cover it up. She didn’t know how long she could keep her hidden identity.
"Alright, I just hope I can fool Kelsey..."
Samantha felt a bit scared.
Ethan had been waiting downstairs for a while, a luxury car parked there.
Ashley and Samantha walked out side by side. Ethan glanced at Samantha indifferently, then focused on Ashley. He hadn’t noticed earlier due to his low spirits, but now that he looked closely, he found her stunningly beautiful...
Ethan opened the car door. "Let's go. Kelsey is waiting for us."
"Okay."
They got into the car and drove to a luxurious mansion. After winding through the property for about half an hour, they finally reached the conference room.
Inside, a woman from Ferndale sat at the head of the table. Though in her forties, she had maintained her looks well, with a voluptuous figure and an air of elegance. She smiled and said, "Welcome to Ferndale, Mr. Yates. We meet again. And this must be the famous Mrs. Yates."
The woman stared at Ethan, her eyes hiding emotions. When she looked at Ashley, a flash of hostility appeared and disappeared so quickly it was almost unnoticeable.
She stepped forward and warmly hugged Ashley. "Mrs. Yates, welcome!"
Ashley frowned slightly because the woman's nails dug painfully into her arm during the hug.
Ashley smiled lightly and said in fluent Ferndale language, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Your Majesty!"
Ethan looked at her in surprise; this woman could speak Ferndale?
What else could she do to surprise him?
