Chapter 559 The Strange Nurse
"Yes, I'm new here. My name is Isabella Taylor, and I specialize in changing dressings for patients like your husband," the nurse replied with a professional smile.
For the past two weeks, Ethan had needed his dressings changed every three days. Until now, a different nurse had been handling this task, so Ashley was naturally curious about the sudden change.
Isabella was a local Ferndale woman with striking blonde hair and blue eyes. She resembled a Barbie doll—undeniably beautiful—and she cast a subtle glance at Ethan, accompanied by a faint smile.
Ethan gave her only a passing look. There was a brief flicker of appreciation in his eyes, but he quickly averted his gaze.
"Ma'am, would you mind stepping aside?" Isabella asked politely.
For reasons she couldn't quite explain, Ashley felt a surge of unease. She shook away these intrusive thoughts, smiled courteously at Isabella, and moved aside.
"Sir, I'll begin changing your dressings now," Isabella announced as she prepared to unbutton Ethan's shirt.
Watching this, Ashley felt distinctly uncomfortable. Yet she hesitated to intervene, fearing she might appear unreasonable if her suspicions were unfounded.
As Isabella's hands moved toward Ethan's shirt buttons, he intercepted her, gently pushing her hand away to create distance between them.
"Is something wrong, sir? I need access to change your dressings," Isabella said, her piercing blue eyes looking directly at him with an undeniable allure.
Ethan remained unmoved. "I can do it myself," he replied coldly as he began unbuttoning his own shirt.
Ashley felt a wave of shame for her jealousy, seeing how unaffected Ethan was by the nurse's beauty. Still, she couldn't help feeling a twinge of possessiveness at the thought of another woman seeing her husband's bare chest.
Isabella cut away the bandages wrapped around Ethan's chest and began applying medication to his wound. Her fingers seemed to linger unnecessarily against his skin, and her gaze fixed intensely on his chest, as though trying to see through it.
Ethan frowned with displeasure. "Are you finished?"
Isabella snapped back to attention. "Yes, sir. Just remember, you mustn't get the wound wet until the stitches are removed."
As she wrapped fresh bandages around him, their proximity was unavoidable. Occasional contact between them seemed to make Ethan increasingly uncomfortable.
"Understood," he said curtly, pulling his shirt closed.
Isabella's gaze lingered on Ethan's chest, making him visibly uncomfortable. He could sense she had been subtly flirting with him during the procedure.
With obvious disdain, Ethan snapped, "You may go now."
"Excuse me, sir," Isabella said, collecting her supplies and leaving the room.
Ashley approached to help button Ethan's shirt. "Why are you so angry? The doctor said you shouldn't experience strong emotions during your recovery."
"That nurse was clearly inappropriate. I felt like she was trying to come on to me," he said bluntly.
Ashley had observed the entire interaction and privately agreed something seemed off about Isabella's behavior.
"Try not to get upset about it. If she makes you uncomfortable, I'll speak with the head nurse and request someone else tomorrow."
"Thank you," he said, and they shared a warm smile.
"Daddy! Mommy!" The moment was interrupted as Andy and Nate burst into the room, backpacks bouncing as they ran.
Behind them came Landon and Liam. After two weeks, Liam's foot injury had healed enough for normal walking. The brothers had been handling school pickup duties while Ashley cared for Ethan.
"Andy, Nate, come here and give Daddy a hug," Ethan called out.
The boys climbed onto the hospital bed, each snuggling against one of Ethan's sides.
"How was preschool today? Any exciting stories to share with us?" Ashley asked.
"So many things happen at school every day, Mommy. Too many to tell all at once," Andy replied.
"We have all the time in the world. Tell us slowly," Ethan encouraged.
"That's not important," Andy said dismissively. "Daddy, did you take your medicine today?"
"And did the nurse change your bandages? It's scheduled for today," Nate added seriously.
"You two worry too much. With your mother taking care of me, how could I possibly forget my medication or dressings? Such little worriers," Ethan said affectionately, patting their cheeks.
"Andy, Nate, what would you like for dinner? I'll make something special," Ashley offered.
"We want steak, Mommy!" they answered in unison.
"Steak it is. I'll start cooking right away. Landon, Liam, please make yourselves comfortable. Dinner won't take long."
"Don't worry about us, Ashley," Landon said. "We've been in Gold Valley District for two weeks now, and there are pressing matters requiring our attention back in Aivalia. We need to return home."
Ashley looked at them with evident disappointment. "You're leaving already?"
"Unfortunately, yes. I'm sorry we won't be able to help with school pickups anymore," Landon replied regretfully.
