Chapter 235 Do Women Care About Ceremony?
Ethan and Ashley got busted, but neither of them fessed up. They both turned away, avoiding eye contact like it was the plague.
James chimed in, "Ethan, come on. Lovers' spats blow over quick. Don't let this tiny thing mess you up."
Ethan shot back with a sneer, "Maybe you should check yourself first."
That hit hard, and James's smile vanished in a heartbeat.
"Ethan!" James's face went beet red, and Ethan just gave him a cold side-eye, saying, "Am I wrong?"
The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife, and it looked like a brawl was about to break out. Ashley quickly grabbed Ethan's hand and said, "Babe, chill out."
Ethan raised an eyebrow. They'd just been at each other's throats, using full names and all. Hearing "Babe" again, his anger cooled off a bit.
Ethan commanded, "Let's get down to business."
Ivy jumped in, "We messed up before. We were too hot-headed when we were younger. After thinking it over, we've decided to get hitched again. What do you think?"
Ethan shrugged, "Whatever."
Ivy was thrown off at first but felt a bit uneasy seeing his whatever attitude. Still, she twisted his words to suit her plan to remarry James.
"So, you're cool with it." A spark lit up in Ivy's eyes, and she looked at James all lovey-dovey. "James, Ethan's on board, so let's set a date for the wedding. I gotta look stunning. Ashley, I'm counting on you for the dress and ring."
Ashley opened her mouth, lost for words.
"Forget the wedding," Ethan said, sipping his tea. "At your age, doing something romantic is just laughable."
Ivy wanted to clap back, but Ashley cut in, "What kind of nonsense is that? Romance doesn't have an age limit. Are you saying when we're as old as Mom and Dad, celebrating an anniversary is a joke too?"
Ethan shot her a death glare. Who told her to butt in?
Ethan actually wanted his parents to remarry. He was just being difficult about the ceremony. But he didn't expect Ashley to back Ivy up.
This left Ethan fuming.
"Yes, Ashley gets me so well," Ivy said, holding Ashley's wrist like they were besties. "So, my wedding dress and ring are all on you."
Ethan frowned, "She's not available. There are plenty of designers out there."
Ethan knew Ashley's hand wasn't fully healed, and he worried designing now might mess it up again, so he shut it down for her.
Ashley got it, but she was still mad at him and decided to go against him.
"Mom, I'm good. Don't worry, I'll handle all the designs for the wedding." Ashley smiled.
"Really? That's awesome." Ivy hugged Ashley, looking super happy.
James rubbed his temples, clearly frustrated, "Ivy, I think Ethan's right. We're too old for a big ceremony. Let's just celebrate at home after getting the papers."
"You don't get it. Women care about the ceremony for every big holiday and anniversary. If a guy makes it special, a woman feels secure!"
Hearing Ivy say this, Ethan sneaked a glance at Ashley.
Thinking it over, Ethan and Ashley had been married for a year. Maybe he should plan something romantic too?
Ivy squinted and said, "Or is it because of Doris? Are you scared she'll flip if she sees us remarrying, so you don't want a ceremony?"
Dropping her name made the air thick with tension.
James's voice got sharp, "Ivy, why bring her up out of nowhere?"
Ivy complained, "You freak out whenever I mention her. At your age, how can you still not control yourself..." Seeing they were about to blow up, Ashley quickly pulled Ivy aside and said, "Mom, Dad didn't mean it like that."
Ashley shot Ethan a look.
Since hearing the name, Ethan had a stone-cold face and a dark, scary vibe.
"We're family. Let's not wreck our bond over outsiders. Dad, don't you agree?" Ashley didn't know who Doris was, but seeing their intense reactions, she knew this person was trouble.
"Mr. James Yates, Mrs. Ivy Yates, Mr. Ethan Yates, Mrs. Ashley Yates, you have a guest," Thomas announced.
Ivy, still fuming, instinctively asked, "Who is it?"
Thomas stammered, "Ms. Jones."
